Oh man, I forgot to wear my Hall jersey LOL
In any case, is it ok to ask about a stream for the lottery? I'll be at work. (If not, please go ahead and edit this off.)

I think it makes sense to see whats the best return you get if Slaf, Nemec, Jiricek are all gone and maybe do a trade conditional on those three being gone. There's a major drop off in terms of ability / team need it seems after those three.

Maybe someone pays big for Cooley for example.
If those guys are gone, I just take Gauthier. Devils need power/interior forwards badly. It would be a bit of a let-down from Slafkovsky/Jiricek/Nemec, but Gauthier still has 30+ goal power forward upside.

I am surprised the fantasy traders among us do not want the #1. That would open up potential trade down possibilities IMO. I think posters here are underestimating Wrights worth because the Devils already have 2 top 6 C's.
I think lots of us don't want to be seen as greedy by the hockey gods and hope it makes it so they don't knock us down the draft order.:eek3:

So Gauthier over trading for Fiala ? I don’t want Fiala at the cost of Slaf Jiricek Nemec but if those uhs are gone , I do t know enough about Gauthier to say for sure if Fiala or him would be the smartest move.
So Slaf and RHD are gone. Draft Gauthier and offer Holtz for Fiala , trade the pick for Fiala , or screw Fiala altogether and keep all assets ?

You absolutely do not move a top 10 pick if you are a rebuilding team. You absolutely absolutely don't move a top 5 pick if you are rebuilding. You absolutely absolutely absolutely don't move a #1 overall pick if you are still rebuilding.

I mean, if Colorado offers Cale Makar? Then sure. But somehow I doubt he's on the market. You certainly don't do it for Kevin Fiala or Brock Boeser or whomever.

year 10 of a rebuild with 6? top 10 picks in that time by all means lets just keep drafting and not try to get nhl talent to help these kids take the next step.

Most likely % is pick 6th. Picking 6th makes it very unlikely Jiricek and Nemec are there but stranger things have happened. Picking 5th is close to a must if we want one of the RHD.

I’m kinda at that point. Getting pretty sick and tired of being out of the playoffs before Christmas. However , we have sucked this long , may as well suck the right way and do thugs the best way possible so we won’t suck again for a very long time.

Of these 6 top 10 picks (I will include McLeod), the Devils have:

One 4th liner
One Middle six winger
Two top line Centers
Two players with basically no NHL experience (who have thrived in non-NHL leagues)

The first two on that list are obviously not ideal, but the last three were drafted in the last 3 years and the 4th is our Captain. The team needs obvious improvements but I don’t understand complaining about the recent drafting of top 10 picks -they all either have been or appear to be exceptional NHL players.

which is exactly why i rather have nhl talent to put with jack and nico and not another maybe prospect that will hopefully produce consistently in 3 years time if ever.

The Devils are not a cup contender right now, so the immediacy of the asset is really not important. The should be looking to build a competitive team that can compete year in year out and you need cost controlled assets for that.

Also - just because Holtz/Hughes hasn’t made an NHL impact right away doesn’t mean the this top pick won’t. You shouldn’t count on it, but that doesn’t mean it won’t happen.

I get it but this is a top 5 pick. Chances a top 5 pick being a bottom line or middle 6 player is low. Late first round is a different story.

The Fiala rumor never had made sense for me after Fitz himself just said that he sees how we need different types of players to help balance and fill out the team. Fiala would be adding another higher end player but he seems to bring more of the same of what we have in smaller shiftier forwards. On top of that, if we are paying him and Bratt this offseason then we would pretty much be maxed out on the larger contracts we can have up front on the team. I also love the idea of Fiala and Hischier playing on a line together but don’t think it makes sense to trade a top 7 pick for a guy who just had 1 massive career year when previously his season high was 54 points I believe.

thats true but to take the next step they have to surround their cornerstone franchise players with talent.

I guess that would beg the question of what the next step is - do you believe that they need to make the playoffs next year or do they just need to have a good season?

The biggest impact on team performance would be a good (not just average) NHL goalie but I don’t see one that has the skills and term with a plausible availability case that makes sense trading a top 7 pick for this year. If their was a Cory trade available to the Devils I would be all in, but there won‘t be.

If we end up getting #1, I'd definitely want to trade down with the 'Yotes for their first and second 1st rounders and be guaranteed Slafkovsky, Nemec, or Jiricek.
If we end up getting #2, I'd still consider trading with Arizona, but I'd be perfectly happy with Slafkovsky
If we get #5 I'd stand pat.
If we get #6 or #7, THEN I start seriously considering a trade for Fiala or Hellebuyck.

they have to be playing meaningful games into march at this point. i know if they win the lotto the chances are 0% they will trade it for an nhl player but to me you could really benefit by the top teams up against the cap giving them relieve with a young cheap contract of a good prospect while prying away a legit nhl player.
