I am surprised the fantasy traders among us do not want the #1. That would open up potential trade down possibilities IMO. I think posters here are underestimating Wrights worth because the Devils already have 2 top 6 C's.

Count me into the bleh who cares camp. Part of me would rather not win the lottery anyway, just so the pick could be on the table for more immediate help

I think people (including me) think trade downs from #1 are a fantasy because they rarely ever happen. Could the Devils in theory get two or three younger players for Wright, I guess but how often do teams go that route - need or no need?

I want to just stay put at pick 5. Don’t even want #1.

Can't help but read it in a Jon Snow voice.

It's difficult to line up, but I'm reminded of the fun that Tampa GM Rick Dudley had with the top pick in the 1999 Draft. He was holding it hostage with Brian Burke who publicly wanted both Sedins, while also shopping the pick to the Rangers who wanted Pavel Brendl. Eventually he worked out a trade with both teams. In the end he turned the top pick into a giant pile of meh, but he definitely thought outside the box.

#1 for #4, #75, #88 -- it's funny knowing that Brian Burke was willing to risk the deal over a 2nd round pick

#4 for Niklas Sundstrom, Dan Cloutier, future 1st and 3rd rounders

Niklas Sundstrom and a 3rd rounder for Andrei Zyuzin, Shawn Burr, Steve Guolla, and Bill Houlder

For the top pick, Dudley thought he was getting a young starting goalie (Cloutier), a young D with upside (Zyuzin), a future #1, and some depth pieces.

It does not happen often for obvious reasons. The Devils are unique in the sense that I doubt many teams picking 1st in a year where a C is the consensus #1 already has 2 top 6 C's. IMO the top pick opens up the chances the Devils make a trade as opposed to lessens them

Seriously. Why wouldn’t anyone want the best asset of the draft for free? Trade down, trade or package for a great established NHLer, or, shockingly, even just make the selection.

I think the lukewarm narrative surrounding Wright has gotten so exaggerated that he’s really getting sold short on his potential.

The same thing happened to Power last year.

FWIW, Pronman updated his prospect rankings this morning. Here's how the top of the list looks:

Projected bubble NHL All-Star and top of the lineup player

1. Shane Wright, C, Kingston (OHL)
2. Juraj Slafkovsky, LW, Tps (FINLAND)

Projected top of the lineup player

3. Logan Cooley, C, USA U-18 (NTDP)
4. David Jiricek, RHD, Plzen (CZREP)
5. Simon Nemec, RHD, Nitra (SLOVAKIA)

Projected bubble top and middle of the lineup player

6. Cutter Gauthier, LW, USA U-18 (NTDP)
7. Joakim Kemell, RW, Jyp (FINLAND)
8. Matthew Savoie, C, Winnipeg (WHL)
9. Danila Yurov, RW, Magnitogorsk (RUSSIA)
10. Jonathan Lekkerimaki, RW, Djurgarden (SWEDEN)

Projected middle of the lineup player

11. Ivan Miroshnichenko, LW, Omsk Krylia (RUSSIA-2)
12. Marco Kasper, C, Rogle (SWEDEN)

Didn't realize that the draft was that bad. only 12 players expected to play above bottom D pair/4th line

Hughes obviously but it’s premature to name Mercer as a top six C.

I only copied & pasted the top 12 picks, as that would likely be the max relevant to us (plus I wanted to show where the tier breaks were).

Pronman had 29 players total in his article and 11-29 were all in the final "projected middle of the lineup player" tier.

I’m visualizing us winning here . I might need to take a break as I’m getting a headache and these work phone calls and emails are interrupting me.
If we win it's single handedly because of you lol! You've been so involved in talking about the draft and hopping for certain guys that I'm now convinced we're getting out guy lol.

Work phone calls? How can you work on a day like this? This draft is clearly more important than a career.
