I'm obviously not a scout or pretend to know much about Slavkofsky, but from a quick glance ...

Looks like an 'okay' skater which isn't great given the level of competition.

Production wise he looks MUCH worse than someone like Kaako.

A lot of his 7 Olympic goals were tipped or looked a little flukey.

Am I missing much other than he's 6'4?
Yes a lot.

Stats are important but context needs to be taken into account with prospects, especially in "men's leagues", where their usage is usually questionnable.

After the olympics, Slafkovsky started getting used in the top-6 with some PP time (as he should've all season). He got 6 points (4G, 2A) in 10 games. That's a 36-point pace (24G, 12A). Way more fitting with his skillset.

Please tell me why we should pick Slafkovsky when Kakko went 45-22-16-38 +1 with TPS in Liiga as an 18 year old and Slafkovsky went 31-5-5-10 +1 as an 18 year old with TPS in Liiga? Kakko hasn't amounted to too much with the Rangers. Slafkovsky severely underperformed compared to Kakko!!!!

Mikko Rantanen's draft year on TPS: 56 GP 9-19-28

I remember wanting Robert Nilsson in 2003 because he broke Markus Naslund's rookie record for points in the SEL. Just because Nilsson didn't pan out doesn't mean I should be skittish about Alexander Holtz.

Bob's list is great -- I certainly agree with you. However, I'm sure you'd agree that RD and big/physical players always go higher than we expect -- Jiricek is both. It will be fun to watch the WJC, for sure!

Both Jiricek and Slafkovsky offer precisely what the Devils need. This is a great, great day for the NJ organization and the fans.
Steve, you were worried (us too), that we'd slip to 6 or worse. Good on you that you have a great problem to consider (the 2 players you've had as our need for months now! ). Time for a bourbon, nice work here and thank you for the insight. Others too, for keeping us all on our toes. Now just a NYRs L tomorrow and its a great Spring!

Jiricek won't be there at 5, in my opinion. Nemec would be a possibility. It's also very possible the Devils take Jiricek at 2, in my opinion. He's exactly what Fitzgerald likes at the Devils' organizational position of greatest need and we cannot discount this.
Steve, if its Slav, which right D do they take in rd 2? And a follow-up could they make trades off the roster for another in the 2nd for more right D? I know you addressed this pages ago but im searching and cant find it. Thx

It’s nice and great to get a high pick and high potential but the devils to me have enough youth and potential. Trade the pick I say for legit nhl young talent. Let another team take a risk on the second pick panning out. As good as Luke holtz or muk might look now they still have a long way to go. You have jack nico on team friendly deals. Use that get the core some needed help. The kid at 2nd isn’t making the nhl this year so that means probably 3 years before they contribute regularly.

but there's def benefits to risking a great player in slaf or jiri - they'll be cap controlled for about half the length of nico and jack's contracts. If we traded for a good core piece, there's a chance we'd have to use a good chunk of our cap. i do see arguments for both

Who do you propose we trade for? It’s a lot easier said than done. They better be damn good. But there isn’t really anyone available who would make sense from what I’ve seen.
And I Love Slafkovsky and think he’ll be a perfect fit. You can never have too much talent. I think we still need more.

That’s if he turns out to be good and lives up to the potential. Let’s face it for all this to go right the devils will have had to hit on all these kids to live up to their draft potential. That will be pretty impressive. Let another team take that risk I’ll take the proven nhl talent and have to pay him.

I don’t know who would be available. I’m not even saying the kid at 2 will bust. But you leverage his potential and cheap contract to a team against the cap for a proven version of this kid that a team can’t afford to pay. Just 2-3 years to find out worse case he’s a middle six winger is going to sting.
