I mean he’s not wrong. Both Slovak and Czech federations had every game available to stream for free. We even streamed it on YouTube for greater access, even pre tournament. Yet Canada will find a way to cut corners and not stream every game.
Why did it ever get moved from exclusively being held there?

I'm curious as to why they changed it since things were ideal, I'm not up on this unfortunately.

I don't know if it was ruined or not but I wish it had stayed where it was. I also don't like the Gretzky part of the name either. We have enough events in Canada and Hockey Canada obviously doesn't need any more money. Let other hockey fans enjoy the competition. It only helps the game.
I'm dying to know why it was changed, I can't remember the particulars.

According to the official site:
The event has been held under a number of different names since the first summer under-18 tournament in 1991 – the Phoenix Cup – in Yokohama and Sapporo, Japan.

It was played for three years in Japan, went to Mexico City in 1994, back to Japan in 1995 and to Nelson and Castlegar, B.C., in 1996 before settling into the Czech Republic and Slovakia beginning in 1997. It alternated between the countries from 1997-2001 before the neighbours co-hosted from 2002-17.

The tournament was known as the Junior World Cup before it was renamed in honour of Ivan Hlinka following the tragic passing of the Czech hockey legend in a car accident in 2004. Hlinka won three IIHF World Championship gold medals as a player before leading the country to Olympic gold as head coach in 1998, among his many accomplishments and accolades.

When the tournament returned to Canada in 2018 (in Edmonton and Red Deer), it was rechristened the Hlinka Gretzky Cup, honouring Hlinka and The Great One himself, Wayne Gretzky.”

So it seems like it was never Czech/Slovakias tournament to begin with and it's moved around.

Well, it's not like they owned it then, pity about the stream issue but hosting it wasn't a divine right or anything.

But any reason for the poster to bitch about Canada as per usual, that can hardly be passed up I suppose.

Low hanging fruit.

I mean if you are gonna host it, the least you can do is stream all the games, it’s not like they don’t have the equipment, commentary isn’t even needed. This isn’t some small U17 challenge in the middle of February. HockeyCanada already made a mess of the December WJC and it appears they are doing their best impression of that here. It’s not low hanging fruit, it would be embarrassing for them to pick and choose which games are availability for viewing.

I'll ask one more time. Is it certain that there won't be streams from matches (except Canada)?

Money. Canadian hockey saw another opportunity to milk fans. As we know, junior hockey is very popular in Canada. And they want to show them also elite U-18 hockey.

btw. how much must you pay for Canada tickets now?

Swiss roster:

Goaltenders (2): Huet Ewan (Lausanne HC), Simeoni Diego (EHC Biel-Bienne)

Defensemen: (7): Balestra Nic (EV Zug), Horak Tim (EV Zug), Lichtensteiger Yanik (HC Davos), Martin Thibault (Fribourg-Gottéron), Niedermann Nino (GCK/ZSC Lions), Palmisano Matteo (Fribourg-Gottéron), Schneller Eric (Rögle BK / SWE)

Forwards (13): Braillard Léo (EHC Biel-Bienne), Embacher Janis (SCRJ Lakers), Etique Zachary (EHC Biel-Bienne), Froidevaux Lorin (EHC Biel-Bienne), Graf Alain (SC Bern), Hull Valdemar (Fribourg-Gottéron), Kaser Guillaume (EHC Biel-Bienne), Lindemann Colin Sean (Leksands IF / SWE), Meier Rafael (EHC Kloten), Meier Simon (EHC Kloten), Pauli Maurice (SCL Tigers), Pedrazzini Gioele (HC Lugano), Zürcher Kevin (SC Bern)

No sign of Gruber. I have no idea if he is hurt again or if our glorious federation has cut him for reasons only they can understand. If he is hurt again its certainly concerning for his future outlook. He was missing games at regular intervals last year.

So like the WHC then? it's about money, gotcha.

I'm not sure what tickets are going for now, how much are the packages for you guys these days at the WHC? I assume not all that cheap, I doubt they are here either.

Who made the decision to award them co hosting the tournament? Did Hockey Canada have control over the tournament and where it was held?

I don't disagree with that at all, I don't understand why they aren't streaming it.

But yes, it's low hanging fruit for that particular individual because anything and i mean anything at all is always a matter of contention with him regarding hockey and Canada, it's just a very convenient chance to bitch yet again.

I've been here awhile. The complaint is legitimate but the complaint could have been anything at all such as bad dressing rooms because that is the usual M.O.

It is confirmed that none of the pre tournament games will be streamed and it seems like the Slovak-Sweden game and Finland-Czech games for the group stage won’t be either. The rest of the games appear to be planning on being streamed

According to TSN (Groups and schedule announced for 2022 Hlinka Gretzky Cup - TSN.ca), they are broadcasting every tournament game.

That being said, I don't see any listings for the Czechia-Finland game yet (US Jr Amateur Championship listed).

That article is old, this is actually the updated listing. Canadian Hockey on TSN Broadcast Schedule - TSN.ca
All other international networks borrow use the tsn feed, so no tsn feed for a game = no stream at all anywhere

But that says that more coverage and channel designations are to come, so they might still be finalizing details (like putting a game or two on tsn.ca (and in the app) in Canada .

I guess we will have to see, still really stupid to not broadcast pre tournament games. Also, hockey Canada (and of course the Hlinka Gretzky site) list nothing but the score and shots. Both Czech and Slovak hockey federations listed on their site: all stats for individual players as well as lines. Hockey Canada can’t do this or what?

TSN is notorious for not showing pre-tournament games for anything. The WJHC is their biggest tourney of the year and they don't show exhibition for it.

I believe that the same thing will be true for stats (that they will be detailed once the tournament starts). They might even be available once the games are done.

Why would TSN broadcast pre tournament games not involving Canada? who would watch that aside from folks like us?

It;s a stretch to even broadcast Canadas games pre tournament as this tournament is hardly a household word here at all yet.

Cmon.

Sorry if its been mentioned but the USA games will be on NHL Network. I would assume theyre picking up the TSN feed
If you go to nhl network tv schedule they have updated the games. You have to go through each day and open the "HOCKEY ON NHL NETWORK" listing, then it shows the opponents. Good news is its more than just USA games. I can remember a day maybe 10 years ago they didnt even pick up wjc games. Good to see.

Goalies, Top defenders and wingers are good, center position is quite average

From 2023 eligibles I would have liked to see Kuusla and Talvikunnas
From 2024 eligibles Helenius, Suoniemi and Soini would have been options aswell

Uh, in Finland we have players' parents broadcasting irrelevant hobbyist games for completely free with their own iphones, but it's crazy to imagine team Canada broadcasting pre-tournament games for a tournament where just about all the draft year's top prospects are playing?

It is weird that Kuusla is not on the team, he even did quite well last year with the u17 team. Perhaps he's injured?

Yes it's crazy............it's a business, they make money off the advertising on sports programming where eyeballs are watching, it's not a mom and pop hobbyists playground just for kicks you know.

They aren't going to show a Slovakia-belarus or whoever pre tournament game of an under 18 tournament "just for the hell of it" and certainly not for 12 guys on a hockey board who insist they get to watch their national team on a foreign sports channel.

Jesus. What a silly comparison, can't believe this was serious.
