2022 Draft Discussion (after the trade)

If were don't make a trade, my dream draft scenario is quality > quantity. Using extra picks and prospects to three guys/spots:
1) LHD -- move up and get Minty (12-16 spot hopefully)
2) Power forward -- Devin Kaplan, Lorenz (maybe Nyman)
3) Goalie -- Topias Leinonen

If we can't make the Minty trade up happen, then either Snuggerud/McGroarty/Ohgren as a big winger or go the big LHD route (Korchinski/Bischel/Pickering). 2nd round Nyman/Kaplan or Donovan depending on if we went F or LHD at 19. Then a big goalie like Topias.

Does Wright being Canadian vs a "foreigner" Juraj have any impact at all on who Montreal picks? I mean if it's close like it currently looks between the two. Or is that more of a French Canadian thing?

Hard to tell since it's a new GM, but it wasn't really an impact when the Canadiens selected Kotkaniemi 3rd overall in 2018 over players like Hughes, Zadina, Tkachuk.

However, there's historically not been a huge influx of top-tier Slovak players in quite some time. Would that play into it? Maybe. I just know fairly recently they were receptive to drafting overseas.

Slafkovsky seems to be as much of a wildcard as Byfield was WRT rankings...its so rare and strange to see guys ranked in the top-3 by some and of th etop 5 by others

You guys really think the Kings are going to take a Russian in the first round?

One year I hope they let Barrett enter #30 in the Rumble.

------------

I like Owen Pickering for the Kings pick (if it's not traded for immediate help). Big growth spurt and his frame looks like he could still add quite a bit of muscle. The Russians would be tantalizing as well, but that might be an ownership call rather than what scouts want.

It has been fun watching some Montreal fans have a meltdown today. I'm sure it was just a vocal minority, but it was just odd reading how some of their fans anointed Wright to be the unquestioned #1 pick since the lottery. They seemingly spent as much time denigrating Slafkovsky as they were pumping Wright's tires.

Draft could get very interesting if Montreal goes with Slafkovsky #1. Unfortunately I could see the fans in attendance have a meltdown a la Eagles fans booing Donovan McNabb because they wanted Ricky Williams.

Then would the Devils just take Wright at #2 and sort out the roster later? Could be a similar scenario to Nashville taking Seth Jones in 2013, milking his ELC, then trading him since he'd want a bigger role elsewhere.

I still think Montreal takes Wright, but it's not a sure thing. Last few drafts have been pretty weird, I think COVID really messed up a lot of traditional development and scouting systems.

I’d say it’s almost certain Montreal takes Wright.

Canadian, center, and consensus for much of the year. They won’t go for a late riser, at least I wouldn’t bet on it.

No slight to Slafkovsky, I just can’t see Montreal drafting a winger 1OA with their current composition & recent history.

Then again, I’ve been wrong before.

I can't see them drafting anyone but Wright due to climate even if Slaf is the best player in their eyes.

They've been begging for a franchise C for what feels like decades, they're not going to trade a chance at a canadian one for a foreign winger with question marks.

"Should" English comprehension helps when reading. Also, we literally traded up to grab Kirsanov just a year ago, guess short memory? Playing in the KHL too.

Again if any of those three are there and someone did not drop, they SHOULD be the only players on the list. No need for safe picks or more mid six guys or mid pairing D. We need one thing and have failed at that forever. A potential stud forward prospect who can produce. My issue with McGroarty. I am high on him yet not for us. Tops out as a second liner and most likely a top third liner who does it all and brings size with a heavy game. Super useful, but not what we need.

The interesting thought is that Pierre-Luc Dubois is suddenly making a stink about not signing long term in Winnipeg. Is there a world where Montreal drafts Slafkovsky and cobbles enough assets for Dubois? Winnipeg got put in a similar situation by Jacob Trouba and they eventually had to trade him leading into his walk year (Pionk+late 1st). Dubois doesn't quite have that leverage yet, but it's on the horizon.

I’m sorry, but was Kirsanov a first round selection? And was there some little conflict going on involving Russia a year ago?

Doesn’t matter what you think SHOULD happen, I’m simply stating what won’t be happening. But go on with your reading comprehension lesson.

Since I have bad reading comprehension skills, can someone explain to me if this is good or bad?

Ivan Miroshnichenko, one of the top prospects in the 2022 NHL Draft, has been diagnosed with "serious health problems" and could miss all of next season, Russia Hockey said on Thursday. Miroshnichenko is receiving medical treatment in Germany, the federation said.

"We believe that you will overcome this illness and return to the ice!" Russia Hockey tweeted.
Avangard Omsk, Miroshnichenko's club, said it was covering all medical expenses.

He’s a supreme talent. Without the cancer and nationality question marks, he probably goes top 3.

Might have to steer clear from the main boards until the draft, some of the Montreal fans are something else. Definitely bizarre, when Edmonton had the #1 pick in 2010 it seemed like a healthy debate between Hall and Seguin among their fan base. But with Montreal, it seems like some decided six months ago that Wright was the hill they were going to die on and have spent way too much time insulting Slafkovsky for having the nerve to enter the conversation.

Now the stat watchers entered the chat as though Joel Armia's Finnish league stats have any correlation to anything. I'm fighting the urge to ask if Anze Kopitar putting up 0 points in 15 Swedish Elite League games during his draft years means he's worse than Robert Nilsson who put up better numbers.
