Just curious, What do y'all think about Reilly Walsh's future? Despite playing well he seems to be dropping down the Devils' defensive depth chart as they draft very promising D-men and the likes of Okhotyuk and Bahl get more opportunity at the NHL level as they bring a different element in their game.

Does Walsh have a future as a Devil? Could he be used as trade bait in the near future? or do you think he will likely be a quality AHL defenseman with the odd call-up depending on injuries?
At this point, I don’t think Walsh has a future with the Devils, too many offense first defenseman ahead of him at the NHL and prospect level.

I don’t think he has much trade value either so I think he will bounce around the AHL as a free agent a bit, trying to find an organization he’s a better fit for.

Personally I think the latter, a quality AHL defenseman is the most likely scenario.

The D landscape is just going to get more competitive in the next couple of years with Nemec and Luke entering the picture...I also think Seamus Casey will make Walsh obsolete if there is any crossover in their time with the organization. Casey might not arrive for another couple of years though. I kind of feel like Casey might be on the 3 year plan with Michigan...just a hunch really.

Devils have Mukhmadullin (KHL) and Vilen (Liiga) already signed to their ELCs and likely to join the team at the end of the year and next season. Same goes for Luke Hughes. I just can’t see the path for Walsh to get to the Devils roster. Right now, Okhoituk and Bahl are above him on the depth chart and now he has to compete with the shiny new #2 overall in Nemec.

I am fully anticipating he is going to be trade bait #1 for the Devils this deadline. I don’t see Fitz going big fish hunting, but Walsh for a third line forward rental or Walsh + 2nd for a second line rental seems like really plausible scenarios.

Now is about the time in his career where he is in line for NHL minutes to see if he has an NHL future or will be a Gragnani/Warsofsky defender at best. Hopefully the Devils deal him to give him a chance.

Walsh was actually a better AHL D-man last year than this one. I think he knows what is coming and he is desperately trying to insert himself into the picture. Unfortunately, he has taken that to mean he has to take the matter into his own hands. The result has been way too many one man efforts. Always trying to carry the puck up ice and making moves to beat defenders in his way when the right move is to pass the puck to an open teammate. The result has been numerous unnecessary turnovers in all 3 zones.

On the PP he tries to carry the puck into the offensive zone, gets challenged and either turns it over or dumps it when all of his PP partners are standing still at the blueline making an ice length clear easy for the opponent. When he gets possession at the point his first thought is to shoot himself. This would be fine if he had a clear lane to the net, but usually he doesn't so his shots are blocked, or deflected wide, deflected out of play, collected by the opponent and shipped all the way down again. He forces shot after shot.

This wasn't his game last year. He did the right things most often and that led to good scoring chances on the PP, breakouts for the Comets with chances for him to join the rush, and chances to log assists by giving the puck to open mates.

Right now I see him as an AHL player with a chance to fill in when injuries leave the Devils in need of a callup. He might be used in a trade to sweeten a deal. I could also see his career moving to Europe in a few more seasons, a couple of which may be at the AHL level care of another NHL franchise.

Utica Comets and Syracuse Crunch tied at 1 after the 1st.

Forwards:
(15) Gambardella/ (26) Schmelzer/ (92) Clarke
(11) Johnsson/ (21) Stevens/ (90) Senyshyn
(25) Foote/ (28) Pinho/ (10) Dugan
(24) Halonen/ (77) Talvitie (91) Hutchinson

D-Pairs
(23) Wotherspoon/ (7) Nemec
(2) Vukojevic (22) Walsh
(55) Geertsen/ (5) Russo

Goal - (93) Schmid

SOG after 1:
13-12 Utica

PP - both teams 0/2

Comets were on their 2nd PK when Syracuse was about to be called for a penalty, but with Schmid on the bench Stevens got a shot on net and the rebound was buried by Ryan Schmelzer.

SHG by the Comets.

Syracuse scored their goal 4 minutes into the 1st on a shot that Vukojevic tipped past Schmid. Earlier in the period Hutchison had a clear breakaway off a long stretch pass and in clean from the blueline he rifled his shot off the post.

Late in the period Dugan hit the crossbar with a shot from RW off the rush.

Comets PP continues to be flat out terrible. Nobody moves. They pass around the perimeter. Force passes into the bumper or cross ice that are usually blocked or intercepted and down the ice it goes. They turn it over and give up SH rushes the other way.

They lose the draw consistently all game long and it makes the it difficult for both the PK and the PP to have success.

The lack of puck handling skills, obvious to anyone who watches them play, is the major contributor to their inability to score. They can't handle passes. They can't pass with any accuracy. They flub attempted shots and passes. They lose the puck while skating with it. They try to beat defenders and turn it over. They miss the net consistently. There's more, but you must get the picture. It's hard to believe guys that heve reached the second highest league in North American hockey can be lacking so many skills required to play the game. How did they get this far?

2nd period is underway.

It's been very pond hockey style thus far in the period. Lots of whistles with the Comets outshooting the Crunch 3-2 in 6 and 1/2 minutes.

The more I watch Halonen the more convinced I become that signing him to a 2-yr NJ contract was a mistake. He is just not good enough to play in this league let alone earn a way to NJ.

Comets on a PP and can't get anything going.

Clarke takes a pass on the rush and shoots from the high slot while on the move and
S---------C-------O---------R---------E---------S!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2-1 Utica

Comets not happy to be ahead as the Crunch come right in after the next faceoff and Schmid is called upon to make a super save to preserve the lead they just took seconds before!

I'm not going to research at this point, but this may be the only time they have had a lead against the Crunch this season in 5 games.

TV TO
9:15 to go in the 2nd and halfway through the game.

Foote and Day are fighting.
No winner here. Very few punches thrown and none really connected.

Johnsson hits the 3rd post of the night by the Comets.

The Crunch keeper, Kaden Fulcher, is playing his 5th game of the season and the first 4 were with the ECHL Reading Royals. You want to win this game? Shoot the puck at this guy! The 3 posts had him beaten clean. Both goals were on shots he was able to line up on and they beat him. Shoot off the rush. Shoot whenever you have a clear look at him!

Comets to the PP with 4:33 to go.

Johnsson hits the post again!!!!!!!!!

They keep loading up, but don't take the shots. Dugan was another bad choice for a NJ contract.

Talvitie still looking for his 1st goal of the season. 1 Crunch on the Comets end boards vs 3 Comets and he WINs the battle and centers it for a shot.

1 minute to go and like so many other times this season the Comets are under siege. They treat 1 minute as if the period is over and just stand around expecting the time to run out! 3 chances to just dump it out an d failed all 3 times and lucked out once again.

Score after 2:
Utica 2 Syracuse 1

SOG:
Utica 12-6
2-period total of 25-18 Utica.

There are 3 teams biting at the Comets' heels for 2nd place. Comets have 44 points.
Syracuse and Rochester both have 41 and Laval has 38.
Rochester and Laval have both lost tonight already.
A win tonight would give the Comets a little breathing room. A loss just squeezes the bunch even closer together.

the 3rd is under way.

The Crunch are due 2 PPs if the refs want to manage the game like they usually do.

Crunch hit the post.

Shaya says, after checking, the Comets have hit FIVE posts tonight.

The Crunch look as if they are skating in practice vs no D.
Comets can lose their intensity like no other team I have watched in many many years.

More shots on Schmid and then one goes through the crease behind him.

Either wake up or this one is going to take a BIG turn for the worse. not even 4 minutes in and it's been a shooting gallery. Comets inability in the dot keeps them in trouble.

This was just a matter of time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2-2 with 15:21 to go.

The Comets were helpless for the first 5 minutes. Comets skating in mud.

The Crunch just came out with a mission and they accomplished it. Total domination like I have never seen from this year's Comets, but have seen their opponents copy on many occasions.

If the opponent scores more than 3 it's usually the end for Utica. Their normal night's work is 2-3 goals for.

Comets in the Crunch end is battle, battle, battle just to keep the puck in. No shots.

Crunch cruise in and unmolested move all around the zone and tee off at will.

Turnovers in the period have been epidemic. Just before this TV TO three Comets had the puck in their own high slot and just passed to a Crunch and Schmid with another miracle stop diorectly off that turnover. Like I said terrible puck skills and the other thing I have kept under my hat all evening, but just can't hold out any longer-----hockey IQ is non existent in many of the Comets and lacking in others. They are just hockey dumb. They get lost. Fluster. Melt under pressure. Stand around dumbfounded. Lose all sense of what to do and where to go.

Stevens right in front point blank and fires it into Fulcher. That was a go ahead goal for a team who doesn't deserve a win tonight based on the terrible 3rd they have played.

2:19 to go.

Shaya says there won't be OT because somebody is going to score before it ends. Let's see if he is clairvoyant. I'll keep quiet.

He's wrong. We're on to OT and the Comets have their 1st point vs the Crunch in 5 games.

Foote Pinho Walsh

Comets win a draw. Foote carries it up the ice and goes all the way to the net and.........................................

S---------------C--------------O-------------R---------E--------------S * * * * * * * *

COMETS W__________________I_____________________N !?!?!?!?!?

I'm having a tough time believing this!!!!

I hope I'm not going to wake up.

Foote fell over the keeper and into the net. The Comets came on to celebrate and the Crunch barged into the celebration. Angry over Foote for falling into the net?

Lots of yapping. Refs seem to have it under control. Nope!
Gemel Schmid wants Geertsen and Geertsen is ready, willing, and able. They are separated as Schmid hugs Mason toawrds the gate. Gemel shakes looe of the LM and circles around the masses to get to mason on the other side. A LM cuts him off and Gambardella pushes and "guides" Mason off the ice. Smart move by a team leader. You won and there is no sense in a suspension with the game over and nobody suffering any maladies.

Final score
Utica Comets 3 Syracuse 2 (OT)

SOG:
Comets - 13 12 6 1 = 32
Crunch - 12 6 12 0 = 30

PP:
Comets 1/4
Crunch 0/2

Scoring:
Schmelzer (4) from Wotherspoon (9) and Stevens (15) SH
Clarke (15) from Gambardella (12) and Schmelzer (16)
Foote (14) from Walsh (17) and Pinho (11)

3 Stars:
#1 - Ryan Schmelzer (Utica Comets) 1G 1A
#2 - Jack Thompson (Syracuse Crunch) 1G
#3 - Kaden Fulcher (Syracuse Crunch) 29/32

Personally I'm going to give Schmid a star. He is absolutely the only reason the Comets won this game.

Foote's heroic effort was the only really bright spot for him tonight and that spot is as bright as the sun!

Pinho's assist was his 1st point in 9 games and he hasn't scored a goal in 19 games. 8 goals in his first 13 games and hasn't scored since with this being the Comets 39th game played of which he has only played 31 due to injury.

Comets back in action at home on Tuesday for the completion of the blackout game vs Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Then play the Charlotte Checkers also in Utica on Wednesday.

Good night, all.
