Looked like he might have hurt his hand in a fight at the end of that game. Which leads to the question of why is Tyce Thompson fighting at all. There are other guys on the team that can do that instead of him.
First, I firmly agree with you that Tyce should not be fighting. He doesn't agree with us as I have seen him making challenges and trying to accommodate other gents in scrums.
Secondly, the fact that "there are other guys on the team that can do that instead of him" is a point I question.
After Geertsen the Comets roster is really short on guys you'd try to avoid fights with.
These guys are flat out no goes:
Nemec
Thompson
Clarke
Johnsson
Walsh
Stevens
Pinho
Talvitie
Halonen
These guys would be willing to defend their mates, but are not fighters:
Gambardella (Career PIM say he hasn't fought much if at all.)
Schmelzer (His career PIM are numerous to guess there might have been a few altercations, but he dosen't have any such reputation.)
Foote (A big strong guy, but he is a prospect you don't want to see get hurt in a fight, His PIM reflect that he embraces that logic.)
Vukpojevic (Another biiger guy like Foote. He appears to be a bit on the crazy side, a screw a little bit loose, but it may just be an image. In 109 AHL games between Bingo and Utica he has amassed 77 PIM, but only 46 of them have come in Utica over the course of 83 games. That's an average of less than 2 minutes/game. Not many fights in that small number.)
Groleau (He has 48 PIM in 130 AHL GP. would venture those are minors)
These guys may be the better choices over the so-called top prospects, but either their PIM during the careers are way to few annually to think they have been in many altercations or they have shown little evidence of being fighters while with the Comets:
Senyshyn
Hutchison
Dugan
Wotherspoon
Russo
Blujus
The guys we have seen willing to go at it and wouldn't cost the Devils are Geertsen and Laberge and while Sam is a willing partner, he has not been very successful at it.
This team is not a rugged group willing to take on all comers. That's a Syracuse type team. They are willing to go at anybody and antagonize all game long. They have beat on the Comets every game this season from a hit standpoint. Utica has given their share of checks, but it doesn't faze any of the Crunch. There are Comets who steer clear of the physicality if they can avoid it and are seldom seen to dish any out.
