can't imagine the blow to my ego if somebody willingly started blackwood over me
All kinds of player at all levels of the game get conditioning stints in the AHL after missing considerable time from an injury. As an example Bo Horvat played 5 games in Utica. It is quite common for goalies.

If his confidence was blown over that he has no business between the pipes for an NHL team where confidence is a premium asset. Some have it at such a high level they are accused of arrogance or detest interviews to such a level that their briefest possible responses result in the media deciding they aren't worth the effort - arrogant bastards. LOL!

Can't you guess? HURT once again. That's the best I can give you.
Last played 1/14.
Looked like he might have hurt his hand in a fight at the end of that game. Which leads to the question of why is Tyce Thompson fighting at all. There are other guys on the team that can do that instead of him.

First, I firmly agree with you that Tyce should not be fighting. He doesn't agree with us as I have seen him making challenges and trying to accommodate other gents in scrums.

Secondly, the fact that "there are other guys on the team that can do that instead of him" is a point I question.
After Geertsen the Comets roster is really short on guys you'd try to avoid fights with.

These guys are flat out no goes:
Nemec
Thompson
Clarke
Johnsson
Walsh
Stevens
Pinho
Talvitie
Halonen

These guys would be willing to defend their mates, but are not fighters:
Gambardella (Career PIM say he hasn't fought much if at all.)
Schmelzer (His career PIM are numerous to guess there might have been a few altercations, but he dosen't have any such reputation.)
Foote (A big strong guy, but he is a prospect you don't want to see get hurt in a fight, His PIM reflect that he embraces that logic.)
Vukpojevic (Another biiger guy like Foote. He appears to be a bit on the crazy side, a screw a little bit loose, but it may just be an image. In 109 AHL games between Bingo and Utica he has amassed 77 PIM, but only 46 of them have come in Utica over the course of 83 games. That's an average of less than 2 minutes/game. Not many fights in that small number.)
Groleau (He has 48 PIM in 130 AHL GP. would venture those are minors)

These guys may be the better choices over the so-called top prospects, but either their PIM during the careers are way to few annually to think they have been in many altercations or they have shown little evidence of being fighters while with the Comets:
Senyshyn
Hutchison
Dugan
Wotherspoon
Russo
Blujus

The guys we have seen willing to go at it and wouldn't cost the Devils are Geertsen and Laberge and while Sam is a willing partner, he has not been very successful at it.

This team is not a rugged group willing to take on all comers. That's a Syracuse type team. They are willing to go at anybody and antagonize all game long. They have beat on the Comets every game this season from a hit standpoint. Utica has given their share of checks, but it doesn't faze any of the Crunch. There are Comets who steer clear of the physicality if they can avoid it and are seldom seen to dish any out.

Charlotte Checkers at Utica Comets

Forwards:
15 Gambardella/ 26 Schmelzer/ 92 Clarke
11 Johnsson/ 21 Stevens/ 90 Senyshyn
91 Hutchison/ 28 Pinho/ 10 Dugan
55 Geertsen/ 77 Talvitie/ 24 Halonen

D-pairs:
23 Wotherspoon/ 7 Nemec
75 Groleau/ 5 Russo
2 Vukojevic/ 22 Walsh

Goal - 50 Daws

Scratches:
Schmid (BU)
Foote (?)
Laberge (I)
Thompson (I)
Blujus (H)
Engaras (H)

Daws keeping the Comets even over the first 6 minutes. That doesn't include the shots that missed the net or were blocked.
Comets are on their heels and the Checkers are coming in waves.

Bunnaman off to the right of Daws shoots from the bottom of the circle and goes 5-hole on Daws who left the 5-hole open until the shot and it went right through.

This goal was the result of 2 Comets blunders. Nemec passed the puck to a Comet in the high slot, but a Checker was in between and picked it. The Comets managed to wrest the puck to the side boards and Russo tried a pass to Gambardella and it bounced over over his stick and was captured by a Checker at the blue line who got the pass to Bunnaman on the right wing boards and he turned into the circle and kept on going to the bottom of the circle before he shot and scored. 2 consecutive errors by 2 D-men resulted in the goal.

1-0 Checkers.

Comets are continuously having the puck stolen off their sticks from behind. The Checkers are tenacious on the puck.

Comets are on the PP and can't cross the O blue line in the 1st minute.

They get in and can do nothing. Puck cleared out and the PP was dismal.

First comes to an end. The Comets were lucky to escape 1-0. They played a very poor period.

SOG 10-4
Daws was the reason for the 1-goal deficit.
Comets 0/1 on the only penalty of the period.

2nd gets under way.

Let's see if the Comets can get heir heads out of their butts after surviving a horrible effort in the first with only 1 goal against.

Nope. Backhand shot 2:15 in and it's 2-0. Both goals have not been good efforts by Daws. He got the benefit of the 1st because he was stellar on the rest of the shots.

He didn't challenge on this one just went to his knees on the right side of his net and the puck went between the post and his blocker. There was not a lot of room but it went right in and Daws didn't make much a of a move at all.

This has been the problem with Nico since late last season. He gives up goals on shots that he can see all the way and they just seem to go through him or past him without much of any kind of movement on his part towards the shot.

Game is half over and the Comets have 6 shots! 2 in the first 10 minutes of this one.

TV TO
7:45 to go and still only 2 shots on the period.

Nemec goes to the box for tripping with 6:50 to go.

Riley Nash scores on a rebound and it's 3-0. Something the Comets can't seem to grasp when they are on the PP. Shot to the far pad rebounds to a wide open Nash in the circle and he just fires it into the open side.

3-0.

Based upon the Comets normal game output, the Comets rarely produce more than 3 goals in a game. Comets get their 3rd shot of the period with just over 2 minutes left in the period.

Shot #8 at the 1 minute to go announcement.

Stevens fires over the net from the low slot. The last of many shots the Devils have launched tonight that have failed to be on target.

Comets managing too match their amazing 1st period total of 4 SOG.

8 shots in 2 periods by this offensive machine.

Puck is dropped to begin the 3rd.

Comets have been going through the motions thus far. Should have a lot of energy left to spend this period. MAYBE?

Schmelzer on a breakaway and hits the post dead center after drawing the keeper out.

Haven't played 2 minutes and the Comets already have 3 SOG and a post that doesn't count.

Comets to the PP as Walsh is mashed after he passed the puck. Boarding.

Typical slow movement anbd the Checkers pick it and get a semi breakaway.

Again no movement and the pass forced down low is picked an shot out.

This team does nothing to set up and run a PP. Goals usually come off the rush. It's pitiful to see the movement, quick passing, and quick releases by the opponents. There is none of that by the Comets.

Now Groleau scores and it's immediately waved off. Goalie interference is the call with Geetsen coming into the crease. Shaya doesn't like the call. I'm not so sure, but the ref made the call immediately and they went right to the faceoff.

Now the Checkers score and it's 4-0.

Comets take a bench unsportsmanlike call.

This game is over except for the last 13 minutes. The only question is whether the Comets can break the shutout.

Shaya has a very short memory. He said the Comets have not been shutout all season. Funny. The final score against Syracuse last Friday was 2-0 Syracuse.

Comets have missed more nets on good chances than their total of 15 shots they have had on net.

Checkers get a PP with 3:25 to go. The building has emptied out. Their is a winter storm going on. The snow stopped, but now it's wind, sleet, and freezing rain. I stayed home. I don't need all that shit. Not going to the game is not my modus operandi. Turns out I made the correct decision.

Put this one in the book.

4-0 Charlotte

Not a whole lot to recap here.

Comets back in action Friday in Syracuse.

Comets continue their tendency to turn over pucks at a price of 3 for a quarter.

Schmid a great save on Raddysh.

Another big stop by Schmid on Ryfors set up by Raddysh.

Dumont and Geertesn a lot of pushing and cross checking. Geertsen wants him to go and Dumont is not willing. Both get 2 for roughing.

4 on 4 is not a forte of the Comets. They play it like they are a man down.

Crunch set up a clean shot from the high slot and Schmid's rapier like glove holds on.

Crunch keep getting shots from high danger areas.

Blujus gets 2 for Holding.

Nemec has trouble shooting the puck out on the PK as his shot is so weak.

Schmid a big stop on a pass right into his crease.

3 1-timers from the right circle. One over the net, one deflected, and one off the side of the net. Wide open shots on passes from the end boards. Schmid in their heads already?

The Crunch are controling the game and if they continue to get these kind of shots, I dare say it won't be pretty.

Pinho stopped right in front on feed from Geertsen in the right circle.

This is a game with straight ahead forwards, with weak puck skills, lack of hockey IQ enabling them to get into space where they are open for passes, miss the passes when they get them, forced passes often don't get to the open guy, make the pass and the receiver fire the shot into opponents. Results are not enough scoring chances and shots are at a minimum.
vs
A team with much better puck skills, forwards always skating past, around, or between the Comets creating open ice from which to get uncontested prime scoring chances.. Their passes are accurate and shots come from everywhere in the home plate area. Draw a line between the tops of the circles. Draw 2 lines from the end of that line across the circles to the bottom of the circles and angle those lines to the posts. It will look like a home plate facing the blue line. Comets don't get a lot of clean shots from that key area, but boy do they give them up there..

Comets to the PP and they can't manufacture anything. Set up for the first time with :40 seconds left on the PP and the shot from outside is held for a whistle.

Comets got a shot from the point. Stevens whiffed trying to feed the rebound into the open side from right in the crease. The rebound went by Stevens to Schmelzer, who whiffed on a backhand attempt from six feet directly in front with the keeper down and out.

Last minute of the period. Crunch dominate the final minute as every Comets opponent does game after game.

1st Period end 0-0

SOG:
Comets - 9
Crunch - 11

Crunch lead in shots on and almost every one of them was a tough stop for Akira.

Comets have 9 and most came from the perimeter.

Both missed glorious opportunities. Crunch by missing the net and Schmid robbing them. Comets failing to get their sticks on open net chances and Alnefelt made 1 really good stop.

Each came up empty on their 1 PP.

2nd is under way.

Comets are not available to tip shots just sent wide of the posts from the points. They are rarely ever in the low slot open for passes. Both situations have presented themselves thus far in the first 4 minutes.

Off the rush Carlyle gets a clean shot from just below the dot and Schmid snatches it as if it were a flip shot. Great stop on a hard shot.

Schmid flashing leather again 15:07 left.

JC how do all of their opponents have no trouble getting into high danger areas and shooting good hard clean shots requiring really good saves. Schmid another stop on a cross ice pass with an open Crunch arriving at the far post. Akira went cross crease with the hard pass and was there to smother a tap in.

Akira is the only reason this game is not over all ready.

And just like that Gambardella comes out of the corner and skates down the goal line towards the net and hits Clarke, mirroring Gambardella, across the ice below the hash mark and one times a perfect pass past the keeper.

G----------O---------A--------L!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Clarke from Gambardella.

1-0 Comets

This happens so often when the team putting on all the pressure and having golden chances snuffed out by a hot keeper, gets scored upon when the opponent gets there first real big scoring chance almost half way through the game.

It doesn't mean the stronger team on the night will just go away. Lots of hockey left in this one.

TV TO 9:32 to go.

Off the faceoff Nemec gets called for high sticking.

That lasts 10 seconds before Gemel Smith swings at a puck, misses, and hits Stevens right in the face.

4 on 4.

Johnsson gets into the crease and is stopped and the Crunch start right back 3 on 1, but the pass at the blueline slows up the rush. Nothing happens. However, the Crunch are playing like it's 4 on 3.

Utica barely hanging on.

Penalties are over.

ECHL Rivera showing why he belongs in Adirondack. He has failed to succeed 4 times on the same shift. Lost it on the offensive boards. Couldn't take a D-zone pass from Nemec. Failed to connect a pass to a mate skating out of his own zone. Flubbed the puck at his own blueline.

Stevens gets a great chance on a pass from Gambardella.

Schmelzer got a good chance and A---felt turned it aside.

Wow, there's Rivera with a chance in close, but A--felt is on it.

Comets to the PP after another TV TO

2:26 to go

Shorthand 3 on 2 and a perfect pass to an open wing with Akira drawn out to the other side and HALONEN dove to block the shot attempt! Don't see him with that kind of effort very often. GOOD JOB!

The Crunch more dangerous on this 2 minute PP for the Comets.

Comets should decline the penalties they are awarded.

Period ends with the Crunch dominating the last minute. Heard that before?

1-0 Comets.

Despite the efforts of the Crunch the Comets managed to get 17 shots on A--felt. He made a handful of real good stops. Akira matched this tough ones with 8 tough stops of his own.

It was the best Comets period of their last 5. 3 terrible sleepwalking periods last night vs Charlotte in a 4-0 loss and a bad 1st period tonight.
Have they actually woke up? We'll see because the Crunch do know how to turn it up a notch or 2 and the Comets will have to match any surge the Crunch manufacture.

Another big stop by Schmid only 1:27 into the period. Scrum afterwards and Geertsen has to play tough guy and gets 2 for roughing.

This could easily change the complexion of this game particularly so early in the 3rd.

Comets get it out deep.
Crunch back in and the pass is off a glove and all the way down again.
Crunch get in and move it around and Johnsson intercepts and clears.
Wotherspoon clears it all the way down.
Schmelzer gets it out.
Comets move out as the PP is killed.

Pinho a shot from the RW boards held for a whistle.

Russo misses the net from the dot.

Dugan will be called and the Crunch are working 6 on 5. Seems like a minute of the 6 on 5 and Dugan gets a roughing penalty that knocked Raddysh's helmet off.

14:26 to go. Comets playing with fire.

Comets clear.
Comets clear it again.
Schmelzer a big hit and the Comets clear it out. The checked Crunch player is down.
No call, but the replay looks like a big elbow. Look for a makeup call on that one.

PK successful.

Stay out of the F--King Box!

Have to hope the refs stay out of this.

TV TO
12:04 to go

Crunch ice it off the faceoff.

Ice it again.

They won all 3 draws.

Hutchison blocks a shot and has to crawl off the ice. This was all set up by a brain dead Vukojevic skating all the way across the end boards to Blujus who was originally wide open for a simple pass and a breaskout. Vuk's move let the Crunch trap him and Blujus togehter and the Crunch ramped it up uhtil Hutch's block and then a rush up ice by Pinho and Johnsson to alleviate the pressure.

Hutchisson has left the bench.

Icing on the Crunch.
