Actually I don't recall but I do know I liked Dellandrea and Samuelsson from that draft
I did like Samuelsson too. Yeah my list for at that pick was Samuelsson or Veleno. I did like Merkley but was worried about the attitude issues. He was said to be one of the most talented guys in the draft but his attitude made him drop. I was okay with taking that risk because of the high upside. Miller, Lundkvist, and Samuelsson are really the only ones that went in the next 10ish picks that became anything and Lundkvist it took until this year.

My honest opinion is that he did earn that last year, and Grier decided to bury him in favor of the bigger guy anyway.

We're still regularly giving starts to garbage like Harrington and Simek, too. Merkley may not wind up having a career, but I'd at least give him a chance over some of his competition, but because he's smaller, I guess he need not bother.
I liked Merkley last year but he really did not earn anything last year. He was just as big of a defensive liability and not doing really anything offensively.

We played what, 26 rookies last year? Nobody got "buried." Merkley got most of his playing time while half the team was sick and wasn't exactly burning down the AHL otherwise. With Knyzhov and Nutivaara hurt this year, and guys like Cicek and Harrington starting over him, it's far more likely that David Quinn doesn't think Merkley helps him win games.

Whats his value here? Like a 5th maybe? Or is there a similar prospect in the same position the Sharks can find a swap for?

Saw this one coming. Think it's for a 4th/5th or part of a bigger trade.

He hasn't been playing well in the AHL for the past few weeks.

This is such an absurd position to still be taking in 2023. Merkley is an offensive defenseman who can’t crack half a point per game in the AHL in his D+5 season. He’s a bust, full stop. Move on already.

My first thought was they use him as the contract dump for Zaitsev then I realized Sens have a ton of Merkleys and they probably wouldn’t even consider adding him.

If Ottawa dealt us two 2nd round picks with Zaitsev for Merkley, I think they'd take that and then just move Merkley elsewhere or not qualify him. Them getting out from that cap hit and bonus is the why that's on the table. If Ottawa pays the bonus, they probably only need to move a 2nd to get rid of Zaitsev. A move the Sharks should still actively look to do but not as lucrative clearly.

It's a pity that Merkley didn't work out and him requesting a trade doesn't help the value. Add him to bigger trade and go on, the most Sharks scenario is that he goes to have Sam Girard season somewhere, and we just look stupid.

Why should he even try when it's very clear the the organization is never gonna call him up no matter how terrible Benning, Harrington, or any of the other zero talent pylons the Sharks are thowing out on Defense are getting unearned NHL playing time over him?

I wouldn't be surprised if he turned into a top pairing superstar elsewhere.

You're being way too charitable to Merkley. Twisting yourself into knots...

I'd be pretty surprised. Maybe it is all a motivation issue, but even then it's assuming 1) that's really the case 2) that it somehow is surmountable. The more likely answer is he had time and space in juniors and abused the hell out of it without changing his game offensively to adapt to a tighter checking game in the pros. The game to Merkley is easy when he can stand at the point, dangle weak stick checks from 150 pound kids, and wait to see who is open. His passing skill allowed him to do that. Now he takes way too long to make a decision against defenders, and he often either makes no decision at all and loses the puck or makes the wrong decision and turns it over with a poor pass. He has a poor shot so he can't even create offense through that when he doesn't have a passing option. He has a poor defensive game that improved slightly over his time here but it still below average.

The only evidence towards your theory is the 4-5 games in the NHL he played last year that he looked pretty solid, and made some creative passes that looked like he was really dialed in. He still had some poor defensive showings then too. So really there's like a mountain of evidence that he won't be an NHLer now and also the latest evidence, vs. a small amount of time last year at the end of the season that he showed he maybe could. Tough draw.

Yea, he was looking like he might have been on the verge of cleaning things up early on but it's pretty clear that he's stagnating. He just can not play fast enough for pro NA hockey.

Hopefully Grier realizes he needs to purge the organization of DWJr’s soft “skill” players. Can’t imagine Bordeleau and Gushchin are far off from following in Merkley’s footsteps.

Org never gave him the right chance but he also didn't put it together in time to reach his potential. Sucks to see but he's probably gonna turn into a solid Marc Andre Bergeron type somewhere else because Sharks Hockey

Think you're wrong on this, but if you see a canvas of uncertainty you pick the largest doubt brush you can and smear your shit on it.

Happy they decided to go with the boom or bust guy. Didn’t work out, but it’s a good gamble to make when he arguably would’ve went top 5-10 without the attitude concerns and getting him in the late first.

Ok Mirco Mueller then
In large part due to his size, strength and competent defensive play, Mueller retained enough value around the league to be flipped for a 2nd rounder 4 years post-draft and ended up playing almost 200 NHL games.

We would be lucky to get a 7th rounder for Merkley and there is no chance he even comes close to having Mueller’s NHL career. Merkley was objectively the worse pick.

It's really weird that we haven't drafted a good defenseman in the first round since Brad Stuart and Scott Hannan

Playing 200 games mostly on a garbage NJD team with even less defensive options than us

He didn't even pass Merkley's point total last year until his 5th year in the league

The teams drafting leaves a lot to be desired.
