Speculation: 2022-23 Sharks Roster Discussion Part II

During the draft Brian Burke (take with a grain of salt) said that a few teams had Merkley as a "Do Not Draft" player. I'm curious if the brass in New York felt that way because, it is odd they just recalled Nick Cicek after his first stint in the NHL. Especially when the 2nd pp unit is awful at moving the puck.

Up late putzing with the trade machine...

Merks, 2023 CAR 3rd, and Timo @ 50% for Lafren and Ben Harpur and NY's Dal's top 10 protected 2023 1st and NY's 2023 2nd?

Also leaves 907K in the tank for Rags' cap for moves at the actual dead line. And leaves 3.7 mill available for the Sharks.

Don't see the Rangers trading for Meier. If they were to extend him it would take up about 2/3 of their cap space for next season that is available, and they'd have to sign like another 9 players.

Oh yeah, I didn't look any further into their cap woes, thanks. TheHockeyWriters did list the Sharks as a potential landing place for Lafren and also noted in there that Meier would likely be headed back. Maybe that dude didn't look any further into their cap woes. Sharks would also have to retain 50%-ish just to make it work.

SNIP:

Adding Lafreniere would help in their process of gaining young talent while also being an affordable option, a key element given their current cap issues. Though Lafreniere needs a contract at season’s end, his production to this point in his career will ensure his next deal isn’t a very expensive one. One player in this particular case that could be on the move the other way is Timo Meier, who is in the final year of his contract.

Alexis Lafreniere New York Rangers

Meier, 26, carries a cap hit of $6 million and is having himself another solid season with 21 goals and 38 points in 39 games. There have been reports that the Sharks want to re-sign him, but whether he wishes to be a part of a team that could continue to struggle in future seasons remains to be seen. If not, moving him for Lafreniere could be a very solid deal for Sharks rookie general manager Mike Grier.

EDIT: yuck, thought /spoiler worked more like reddit where there's just the little, black "redacted" type rectangle, not a big blurry pile of pixels.

He’s a 22 yr old puck moving dman with low urgency and a high key, low key, competitive nature..but he’s super talented. Wonder if MG can fetch a 7th.

I think you can find a place for Merkley at the trade deadline on a bad team after they rent out their players like Arizona may move Chychrun, Ghost, and Stecher. I don't think Merkley will get moved until then at the earliest but he may just end up a throw-in for another deal and let that team move Merkley elsewhere. We'll see. I don't blame him for requesting a trade and I don't blame the Sharks for not giving him an NHL opportunity. I think he deserved it over Cicek but both are bad options at this stage as neither earned it.

Merkley is baby soft. Thought that kid was 5'8/5'9 at first, only to be shocked he was 5'11. You always hear about players playing bigger, but Merkley is literally the opposite. Great talent, but until he commits and is willing to grind it out, he isn't going to do anything but let in soft goals. I feel like 90% of his attitude issue is him mentally quitting and then arguing with people when they don't want to hear his excuses. Worse defensively than Goldobin.

how come we didnt pick up vrana?
one of the theories going around Canadian media was that GMs know how hard it can be for a player to transition out of Player Assistance, and that folding in a move to a new team could be detrimental to Vrana's mental health etc. Could be a thing where GMs are putting humans above hockey

Yeah I don’t think so. That’s a good thought but if GMs actually thought he’d improve the team, they’d claim him. I think it’s a mix of coming out of the program, his contract, and him not playing great (granted small sample size) in the AHL.

I could see another team trading for him so they can send back some cap/a contract. I know there was some speculation that the reason he was waived and wasn’t claimed was because it was worse than we know, which is possible. I really don’t think that’s the case though. I think everyone is looking WAY too deep into this situation. I think it’s a matter of his cap hit and him just coming out of the program. I could easily see all other GMs giving Yzerman a call and asking if he’s available but I could also see Yzerman saying no he’s not available.

Y’all can read the whole article if you want, it’s just a quick summary of all the teams. Seravalli mentions Timo, Reimer, Bonino, Nieto, and Merkley as trade pieces.

Also quick aside, Seravalli might be a solid follow for Sharks fans. He seems to talk about them a bit more than other writers and is normally the first with the scoop. He broke Merkley’s trade request and a few signings last year.
