If you’re MG you gotta see what’s best for the franchise and try to get yourself an extra 1st and your best chance at a lottery pick. I mean, it ain’t rocket science. Some of these draft eligible, high 1st rd graded players could potentially shift the trajectory of your franchise for the next decade. Maybe I’m being dramatic but I literally would do everything possible to get two 1sts in the top 10.

But a top 15 draft pick is more important than both of them for a team about to miss the playoffs again.
There’s still 4 months into the season and they are beginning to get healthy. But no a top 15 pick for a team with prospects and young players coming out the asshole is not more valuable than having the space to add another impact NHLer.

It's still not logical to do this year or at the earliest you do it at the draft. This feels like an off-season move. They aren't trying to make the playoffs from what I have seen so why give up a first.

Unless there is something else in the works....

There’s no reason to move him unless there is something else in the works. Yes they are trying to make the playoffs. Otherwise they wouldn’t have signed Giroux and traded for Cat and have been trying to trade for another top 4 D this whole year.

Ottawa knows they don't draft so well in #5-#15 overall, so thats why they are ready to risk trading the 1st round pick (jk)

But in all seriousness go for the 1st rounders, you need to build a young team with depth.

Definitely think there's a motivation issue, in that I think he proved he deserved a chance last year but got buried indefinitely by Matt Benning. I'd request a trade too if I were him.
If he wasn't playing better than Matt Benning, I'd suggest that he hadn't proved he deserved a chance. This year and last, there was room on the right side of the defense for him to earn and he didn't. I hope a change of scenery helps, but I can't imagine folks will be beating down Mike Grier's door for a chance at Merkley.

My honest opinion is that he did earn that last year, and Grier decided to bury him in favor of the bigger guy anyway.

We're still regularly giving starts to garbage like Harrington and Simek, too. Merkley may not wind up having a career, but I'd at least give him a chance over some of his competition, but because he's smaller, I guess he need not bother.
