Would you guys be open to trading for Alexis Lafreniere? New York seems to be open to trading him, and Sharks would be a good place to get a chance @ Top 6 role. I've always loved these kind of chances, even though it's weird that NYR is already doing this (bit of a red flag)

If someone has scouted more of Lafreniere, I would like to know if it's another Yakupov or is he more 2nd-3rd line guy that went too high in hindsight.
I'm not sure I see the point, unless he's part of a bigger deal (like Meier to NYR for a 1st + Lafrenière).

It sounds like Lafrenière is more of a third-line winger, who doesn't really have any high-level skills. He can play physically, he has some NHL-quality offensive talent, and he can play pretty good defense, but he doesn't have any high-end offensive traits. That's a good player to have (and of course maybe he breaks out), but nothing worth breaking the bank over.

However, I suspect the Rangers are going to want something nice in exchange for Lafrenière - not a 1st, but perhaps a 2nd? After all, he's a very young player with some skills and great draft pedigree. I don't think we should spend that much for him. Bringing him back as a second piece on a bigger trade, though, could be reasonable, and maybe he develops into something special (or at least remains a useful player for a few years).

Meier for laf and a 1st is to much give on the sharks end. Laf should not have been the 1st pick and would barely be top 10 in most other drafts.

Lol this is an absurd take. You wouldn’t trade a 2nd round pick for a 21 year old who has already proven he is a bonafide top nine NHL forward? Do you realize how low the odds of drafting a player of that caliber in the 2nd round is? The Rangers would be insane to even consider dumping Lafreniere for such a weak return.

It's not meant to be a serious and complete proposal, merely a quick hypothetical of the sort of trade Lafrenière might be useful in.

Sure, but only if the return is nothing close to what the rangers think they can get for him.

I'd be open to it. Obviously wouldn't give up the farm, but the only things off the table would be this year and next year's 1st round pick.

I don't think Bordeleau + Merkley + a pick would get it done though.

Definitely but only as a buy low candidate otherwise no reason to

I am. I think he’ll be a solid second liner when all’s said and done. I’d trade anything outside of Eklund and future 1st round picks for him (although for Meier it would obviously have to be Lafreniere++).

I would be. I would assume that Grier already has a pretty firm understanding of what Lafreniere is considering his time with the Rangers and what he would cost and whether it'd be worth it. I wouldn't mind him being part of a return package for Meier but it would need more than just him and a 1st.

Let me get this straight, you want MORE than a mid 1st round pick and a recent 1st overall pick for a player who’s effectively a pending UFA? Good lord it’s going to be fun reading this board when the Meier trade actually goes down.

So you have a problem with someone wanting more than a recently scratched middle six forward and a mid 1st round pick for an elite winger? Get over yourself. You're not anywhere near as smart as you like to think and have been laughably wrong on quite a few of your own assessments over the time you've been here. I wouldn't care if the team doesn't get that much for Meier but I don't have to defend wanting more to the likes of you just because you look down your nose at everyone on this forum so you can fulfill some self-gratification thing you absolutely have a need to do that is truly pathetic.

At 21, Ferraro had proven he was a bonafide NHL defenseman, and look what happened.
I'd look to get the Rangers to add a Cuylle or Krastov. We can always add a little if need be. Really roll the bones on this deal
At this point, just go for picks.

This place being fun would be a welcome change.

Maybe it's just me...but what player would want to stick around in this mess? If I'm Karlsson/Hertl/Couture (ie, an older player who has market value) I'm constantly badgering Grier to get me to a contender. I'd lose respect for any player who was content with sticking around; precisely the type of player the Sharks should avoid.

Precisely why Hertl should have never signed that contract. It was a bad decision for both parties. Hertl could have gotten the same or near that amount with a better team.

They should have thought about that before signing untradeable contracts.

He could've gotten near that amount but he couldn't get that amount anywhere else. That 8th year is why players will sign with bad teams if they're willing to offer it to keep them. The guys can still be moved with time but it's not easy.

This is the difference between Burns and the rest

I really think as difficult as it would be to trade the others, GMMG would have found a way by now if they said what Burns said in the off-season meetings

For me, Couture not asking for a trade is a red flag about him. Hertl and Karlsson are clearly gutted by the losses. Couture is just there. He’s completely lost his competitive edge. When was the last time we’ve seen him show and emotion?

I mean Couture is rebuilding his value this season. He has 30 in 37 and actually looks dangerous. I think it’s a little early to be putting these guys to the sword for sticking around. Hertl is probably the one that I think is the worst since he chose to resign here when this team was already bad.

I have close to zero interest in Laf for what the Rangers are rumored to be looking for as a return.
Has he even been rumored to be available? I’m pretty sure it’s mostly the fans trying to recoup value (at least from what I’ve seen).

I never felt like Couture had some noticeable competitive edge during the regular season like Pavs did. He only let that out during the playoffs. I think that’s fine if you have a competitive team to make the playoffs but he’s not a good captain for a rebuilding team needing to establish a new identity. I don’t think this team has that sort of leader right now. Maybe Sturm is the closest one.

Only a fool would take Hertl’s contract. He’s going to hit a wall hard in the next few years. Resigning him made zero sense for our rebuild.

Karlsson if guaranteed he’d keep even 80% of this play for the next five years might be able to be dealt, but he won’t keep this up.
