Sharks get Bedard and suddenly we're contenders? Or even in the playoffs? Lol. C'mon guys. Even if we bring up all our good Cuda kids we're not ready to contend. We'd blow our load waaaaaay too early. I also don't expect Bedard to light it up in his Freshman year. Not crazy light up at least. He's not a small 5'10", but he's still 5'10". Who is the last 5'10" elite center rookie who tore it up right away?

That's not even getting into how much of a mess the defense is. Outside of Karlsson, who is able to competently able to play top-4 minutes on the regular? How many defense prospects does this organization have that credibly have top-4 potential? It is not looking like a quick fix.

Defensemen are fairly easy to acquire via trade or free agency. All of NJ's current top four were signed or traded for, 3/4 of Colorado's top four were trades, same goes for 3/4 of Tampa's Cup winning top four.

The problem is the Sharks don't have the cap space or the surplus assets to even get involved in those kinds of negotiations. That's why they need to dump Karlsson regardless of the return as long as it frees up long term cap space. Also why Meier needs to be traded instead of signed to a $75 million contract. If someone is willing to take Couture at 5M/year he should be gone too. Then over the next two deadlines players like Nieto, Reimer, Labanc, Kunin and Barabanov need to be dealt for mid round picks if possible.

If they accomplish all of that then I think adding a starting goalie, top four defensemen and complementary forwards shouldn't be too difficult. They will have surplus picks and prospects to deal from and the cap space to accommodate players they trade for or sign in free agency.

The much bigger issue will be finding a 1C and 1D which can only be done at the top of the draft. If they don't get lucky with Bedard it will take many years of finishing at the bottom of the standings to fluke into foundational pieces like that. But dumping Burns, Meier, Karlsson and Couture would certainly help give them multiple kicks at the draft lottery can.

"conveniently" ignoring Hedman and Makar, the two franchise #1s were drafted top 5 and not traded for/signed because those are guys you need to win who rarely become available.

The sharks will have 16 mil in cap space next season and 41 mil the following season. And that is with every big contract still on the books. So even if meier is signed to a 10 mil contract, we will have 31 million in the 24/25 season.

Conveniently ignoring the part of that post where I explicitly stated “The much bigger issue will be finding a 1C and 1D which can only be done at the top of the draft.”

31 million with 7 players signed. Aka an average of $1.9M in space per open roster spot. That’s not nearly enough to make the drastic improvements the Sharks need.

16M in cap space but we have to resign 11 players on the main roster alone. The 41M the following season only has Couture, Hertl, and Sturm as forwards on the roster. So all of that cap space will be gone fairly quickly once Grier actually signs guys to just ice a team.

That's why you get as many picks as you can...not just hoping that you get a main group of prospects to build up the next core, but also to give you trade ammunition. That's one of the Sharks' biggest issues...not only do they not have prospects that can be foundational pieces (pending Eklund's development), they don't have many solid prospects who have good trade value either.
