This is the current ideal scenario. But man it would be nice if we didn't have Hertl on the books this year. I can't stand Joe Will for that decision.

It’s a weird decision on both sides. Why does Hertl want to be here? But ultimately he can be traded if necessary and it’s not the end of the world to have him help transition new players into the team.

Some guys just like being where they are and really enjoy playing for that team. The team could turn around in 3-4 years when he's 32-33, becoming the Captain, and still having some great hockey left in him. Lord knows why Shane Doan stayed with the Coyotes his whole career, but he probably really enjoyed the lifestyle and he and his family had roots dug deep.

Yeah, I get the impression that Hertl really looks up to Joe Thornton too and I think he sort of wants to follow in his footsteps here. I don’t hate it - I love Hertl.

Curious how long Grier waits to start selling whatever pieces he can. I mean the Sharks are clearly not a playoff team and it seems risky to wait until the deadline in case of injury or whatever else…Really need to get what we can for Meier and Reimer asap to try and maximize our draft odds.

It may be that Grier is ready to deal, but other teams want to reduce cap hit (IOW closer to the deadline they don't have and extra 1/4-1/2 of salary to pay).

It may also be that negotiations are complicated (and/or teams not willing to pay what Sharks are demanding to do so) with teams wanting the Sharks to retain salary. (They are already retaining on Burns. Only two more slots left.)

Grier is also a rookie GM. He's more likely to be cautious and wait for others to set the market.

Ottawa most certainly doesn’t want to pay what Doug Wilson paid. Working out the parameters of the deal is the only thing holding a deal back. Where there’s smoke there’s fire imo.

Im guessing Karl gets traded for what amounts to be free if hes moved so I am not sure how much it matters

Galchenyuk on waivers. I realize he’s kind of a joke but I don’t see the harm in taking a chance on him and seeing what transpires.
Harm, no, but I don't see that he's going to produce any more than the guys we have now, like Gregor or Svechnikov (who are at least younger). Replacing someone like Svechnikov doesn't really do anything except make a move for the sake of making a move.

Looking forward to the mountains of shit Grier takes from the fanbase when he trades Karlsson with $3M/year retained for Nikita Zaitsev and Mathieu Joseph.

If a 2023 1st is there I'm sold
It’s a good trade for us even if there are no other pieces involved. Time to close the book on the disastrous Karlsson era and move on.

The only red line on a Karlsson trade should be having to attach positive value assets just to get rid of him. Or having to take back an even worse contract but the only one that even exists is Huberdeau’s extension.

To Ottawa:

Erik Karlsson @ 8.5M (3M of retention)

To SJ

Mathieu Joseph
Nikita Zaitsev
2023 First (top 3 protected, becomes 2024 first otherwise)

what do folks think of that
Hate it. Hate retaining at all. It’s going to cost that first just for us to take Zaitsev. Add in another solid prospect and deal.
