The ‘deal’ with Eklund is that he didn’t earn a spot in the top-6. He’ll start in the AHL and when he earns a promotion, he’ll be on the Sharks. I’m confident that it’ll be sometime this season.

Eklund, Borderleau, Merkley, and to a lesser extent Gushchin are only in the minors because they are waiver exempt. That doesn't solve the fact the Sharks are icing players that have no business being on an NHL roster taking up their spots and keeping their jobs out of fear that someone would be stupid enough to waste a waiver wire claim on them.

I agree with Hodge that we should let them dominate the AHL. Spending half a season - a full year with the Barracuda isn't going to change the Sharks season (maybe helps them draft a bit higher). Let them be the guys in the AHL and adjust to dominating against other men before they are thrown into top 6 spots with the big club,.

I don’t necessarily agree with putting a time limit on it but I do agree with the overall point. Gushchin, Bordeleau, Eklund, and Merkley head down to a team that is actually good and make them give you no choice. One thing especially helpful right now is that the AHL team is in the same city so the big team can consistently help with the development.

After Eklund’s inconsistency last season (some his own fault, some out of his control) what he needs more than anything is to score. The AHL is the best place for him to do that. If he belongs in the NHL, it will be apparent by game 10 in the AHL, a la Kevin Labanc, and he’ll be a Shark.

Trust me, I’d much rather watch Eklund in the NHL than Matt Nieto too, but this is better long term.

The problem with "let them earn their spot" is that it allows the rostered guys to just show up, skate, and collect a paycheck. These guys need to feel the pressure of losing their "spot". After watching the uninspiring play these first two games of the season, these guys need to feel more pressure to lose their spot.

On top of that, I’m fine with him Bordeleau, Gushchin, Coe and whoever else getting used to playing together in the situations we hope they’re playing together in in the NHL. (That sentence will make @The Nemesis proud.)

I guess they want to slide their contracts one more year. and assume a year of AHL development wont hurt to get a better chance to win Bedard

Or we let the pay check getters play and we tank. Bedard or bust!

The slide only applies to Eklund and I would probably utilize it in his case just because there isn’t much to gain having him play a losing year in the nhl compared to at least maybe a competitive year in the AHL.

Whether or not there's something he could gain with the Sharks this year is debatable. However, there are things that could be lost if he's performing quite well with the Barracuda and he's buried down there very clearly just to slide the contract--trust being the main thing.

Players (not just Eklund, but his teammates, and agents, and players around the league eventually) would start to see the Sharks and the front office in a negative light: cheap, not caring about trying to win, not treating young players fairly. It could be a fine line--it all depends on how he plays in the AHL--but a bad team, one that needs to rebuild on many fronts and historically had difficulty attracting players from the outside, has no business making themselves appear Scrooge-like when it comes to these matters.

When Eklund produces is when this may warrant greater consideration to me. At this stage, I just don’t view his preseason justifying it. Same for Bordeleau. If anyone did, it was Gushchin. I just think Eklund at least can use the AHL experience to start with.

Oh yeah, at this point, absolutely no issue having them start with the Barracuda. And if they do well enough to force Grier's hand at some point this year, it's a good problem to have.
