Mike Reilly on waivers. Would be our best D. Would have to clear some cap space though.

That would solve a lot of problems for us, locking him up with Karlsson, Ferraro with Benning and Vlasic with someone. Waive Simek and Megna/Harrington. I believe Benning is going to get better by the year and will contribute as a complimentary 2nd line and hopefully 3rd line RD for the future. Benning had a good preseason, we will see after 20 games.
If Merkley gets a call up, lock him with Reilly or Ferraro. After all this I don't know if the cap goes right.

We just don't have the cap space for Reilly.
I mean we could.

Eklund, Bordealue, Cicek, Viel, and Dell are sent down. That still leaves the Sharks with 9D (including Knyzhov) and 14 forwards.

Playing around with CapFriendly - putting Knyzhov on LTIR, and sending down Menga and Nieto or Gadjovich will leave the Sharks with just under $2.6M or $2.7M respectively. Personally, I'd send down Nieto for the extra $100k cap relief but I doubt the Sharks do that.

That means in order to pick up Rielly, the Sharks could waive Harrington to add a further $750K to the space needed.

However, this team will likely make the moves and not pick up Rielly so they can accumulate the cap space for taking on salary at the deadline.

Remember when people said that we should keep cap space for these very situations?
For what situations? Claiming a 29 year old third pairing defenseman with a 3M cap hit through 2024 off waivers?

"Third pairing defenceman".

As opposed to signing a third pairing (at best) 28 year old defenceman for 4 years.

Benning’s full cap hit can be buried in the minors. Reilly has significant negative value at his cap hit and remaining term which is exactly why Boston waived him and why he will pass through waivers unclaimed.

Also if we're just trusting what the charts say about these players:

Reilly is a decent player, certainly better than at least half of the defensemen on the roster right now, someone who maybe could be the best partner available for Benning. But he'd be a lot more appealing to me if he were in the final year of his contract; he's the kind of guy who, if he were to play okay, could be flipped at the deadline for a mid-round pick because contract concerns would be minimized.

Since he has a year to go after this, that $3 million heading into next year could be a bit onerous in terms of trying to sort things out if the team does choose to bring back Timo. So while he would be an improvement, IMO, I don't think it would matter enough to be worth it. I don't think this team is close enough to the playoffs that he would put them over the top or anything, but he could help add a few wins and give the club a worse shot in the lottery.

Pretty sure Grier is trying to be bad, at least this year. Given that he is still effective this season, would you rather have Mike Reilly and the 2023 8th overall or no Mike Reilly and the 2023 5th overall?

It’s a fair point. I want this team to be battle real hard and lose constantly this year - I’m all in for Bedard.

Maybe Reilly is that tier above the type of player this team should pick up on waivers, but I think there's value in getting a decent D that provides neutral value than one that provides negative value, just for the team's mental state.

In other words, losing 6-1 or 3-1 is still losing, but only one of them is demoralizing when occurring consistently.

Honestly I wouldn’t even really consider claiming Rielly even though I think he’s better than all but 2 of our D. I don’t think we should be adding anymore LHD. We have too many as is. I’d claim Myers thought and give him a chance. He looked like a legit top 4 D in Philly and then went to NSH and got hurt and buried on the depth chart.

I don't think we can afford to anyway, but while we have a bunch of LHD, what we don't have are good LHD. We have Ferraro and a bunch of garbage, plus a few prospects who might be ready sometime this season.

We might have 5 LHD but only ferraro should be anywhere near a top 4 spot and and 3 if not 4 should barely be in the nhl.

I think it's more, would you rather pick up Reilly, retain 50% and trade him at the deadline next year for a 2024 2nd (ballparking this...), or move up a pick or two this year. Don't think he moves the needle that much in terms of overall standings.

Hence, would you rather a 2023 8th overall + 2024 2nd or a 2023 6th/7th overall. What pick would we need to get back from trading Reilly to compensate us moving down 1 or 2 slots?

I mean yes but it’s worse on the right. Nutivaara supposedly looked okay in preseason (I don’t think he played much though). On the right we have EK, Benning and left handed D.

Sure - our problem is that we suck everywhere and can't fix that by just plugging a couple of holes. But a LHD is available, and a RHD of similar quality is not. I still think its a moot point.

I also think it’s a moot point but I also think Myers in the right role is similar to Reilly although I’m definitely in the minority there and biased. I really really liked Myers on Philly and think he can bounce back to that level.

My guy who is a semi realistic claim is Mahura. Can play left or right but is left handed. 24 years old. .75M contract. Little bit more of a two way D but has some untapped scoring potential (IMO).

Grier needs to hold the line, the tank is off to a great start and this team does not need any upgrades. Bedard is the goal, otherwise what is the point of watching this team play like crap

Because not everyone is cheering for this team to play terribly. I watch them to cheer them on to victory.
To me, that is the essence of watching sports. Not to hope that they lose and suck. If that was my thinking, I’d go watch musicals or go to the art gallery.

Personally, it depresses me that people come to this site to post that we need to lose.

I want them to play hard and well but I also want to be realistic on the "winning" part of that equation. Right now they need to concentrate on development for their young players and entertainment for the on ice product. Winning should be down the list.

I mean I want them to win, it's more fun to watch and follow when they are competitive. But if they aren't going to make the playoffs (my prediction) then I'd rather they at least get a nice prize at the end of the season vs sitting through another version of what we had to watch last year just to draft at 11

All that to say, I don't see a reason to add someone who makes them 5% more competitive because that 5% (in my opinion) isn't enough to get them to the playoffs.

I'd actually love if they made the playoffs, I don't think they'd go very far but I love having a chance to play spoiler and steal a series from a good team
