According to Friedman, Sharks told Carolina it’s a no and that there’s a deal in place with the Penguins - they’re waiting to sign O’Connor after arbitration, open the buy out window and buyout Granlund, then the deal will happen. Apparently O’Connor sounds like one of the pieces which, meh.

If this is real, anyway:

It looks like O’Connor also played at the WC with Quinn. So they do have additional familiarity.

He’s had great numbers in the AHL but has never had the opportunity to be anything more than a 4th liner in the NHL. Curious if he’s got anything more with more minutes but with the 4C spot virtually open (pretty sure Carpenter is mostly an AHL signing) and Lorentz traded, he does seem like an obvious replacement (he plays all 3 forward positions apparently).

Just hope that, unlike the Burns trade, the 4C isn’t the main part of the deal…

Looks like O'Connor's arbitration isn't until August 4th?

And that 4c brought us Anthony Duclair.

“So unless the Sharks are willing to come around and take less, and I believe that’s essentially where the Penguins are, it’s like hey we don’t even have anything to trade you. We have nothing. We have no picks, prospects, we have nothing,” he said. “So if you want to give him to us, we’ll take him on for 9.5 million bucks. Short of that, I guess we’ll pick up the conversation later. That could be in August, it could be whenever.”

Seravalli sounds pretty down on the deal.

The Pens can have him for less, with less retention. Its simple really. lol.

Of course the Penguins would say “well if you want to just give him to us at $9.5 mil”. Obviously they would want him for free.

Them saying they don’t have anything to give is complete BS. They have 1st and 2nd round picks available to trade in all the next 3+ years.

Good for GMMG not to just give him away for free while still retaining.

Drew O'Conner is from Chatham, New Jersey, a wealthy New York suburb, and attended a private, all-boys college preparatory high school and an Ivy League university. He has about the least "blue collar" background I can imagine outside of actual titled nobility.

It reminds me how an NFL analyst once called QB Zach Wilson "blue collar", his uncle is the founder of Jet-Blue, it tends to mean nothing in sports.

Pretty sure "blue collar" means the player is hard working and gives it their all. Not actually some "son of a sharecropper" shit.

Said this in the main board thread but I'm not sure why Karlsson needs to be traded any sooner than the 2024 trade deadline. He just wants to compete for a Cup, I doubt he cares where he's playing from October to March.
I think his preference is whatever is best for his family and his chance to win. Most guys don't like being moved at the deadline iirc

Ha, yes, my wife grew up down the road from there, though it was more middle to upper-middle class (in her town) and it's gotten crazy in the past two decades...after her parents sold their house and moved away, which she's still bitter about (the house has tripled in value over that time or something).

So yeah, the blue collar thing is funny in a way that feels similar to how it feels like you find out half the goons in the league went to an Ivy League school. I guess all that matters is how you play, not how you got to playing that way.

Karlsson should be grateful that Grier is accommodating his trade request at all considering the amount of retention that will be needed. He can’t also get picky about the timeline. If it matters that much to him just agree to mutually terminate the contract and f*** off.

And if he is really that way, it could make for a better locker room if he's gone, better for the Sharks locker room going forward.

"Too complicated a trade to do during the season, cap hit is too large, etc - This is a trade for the offseason"

-Things we heard repeatedly during last years trade deadline.

Did Grier say that or was it just speculation from reporters? (genuinely asking I don't remember)

Rosters are already mostly set and pretty much every significant UFA has been signed. Teams by and large shouldn't be in any more of a cap crunch at the trade deadline compared to today. If anything some potential suitors will actually accrue more cap space by then which could allow them to add Karlsson more easily.
