How is it a horrible deal? Dallas is up against the cap with a veteran laden roster surrounding a young core in its prime. They have to make the playoffs this season so trading a 1st for the highest upside cheap young RD available is a very shrewd gamble to try and replace Klingberg’s production. It might not work out but the 1st is unlikely to pan out as well barring a huge collapse.

I don't even have to imagine how you view this if Wilson made the exact deal. It would be the complete opposite.

No shit. Wilson mismanaged the team into a black hole where trading future 1sts would be asinine. Dallas is in a completely different spot competitively.

Dallas really isn't that much better off than us, their cap situation is arguably almost as bad with Benn and Seguin

They have good goaltending and Jason Robertson, that's about it

Dallas finished with 20 more points than the Sharks did last season. They’re not a Cup contender or anything but they’re clearly much better off than us.
 
Interesting article from Sheng Peng today. While NHL scouts were impressed with Bordeleau and Eklund, they didn't think they were NHL ready. That's a bit of a downer.

Feels like Dallas is pulling a San Jose circa 2018...one last kick at the can.

Interesting article from Sheng Peng today. While NHL scouts were impressed with Bordeleau and Eklund, they didn't think they were NHL ready. That's a bit of a downer.

There was a quote from a scout saying "they" will be in the AHL" before finishing his sentence but Sheng was speaking about Bordeleau before that. Didn't see any quote from a scout saying Eklund wasn't ready.

Edit: I guess I missed the "multiple NHL sources" who said they didn't see anyone NHL ready. At the end of the day it only really matters what Grier and the coaching staff think.

But I was told that if Eklund doesn’t make the team out of camp something is seriously wrong.
I see it differently. If Eklund looked like a guy who could comfortably make the NHL at 19, then he's trending like a Michalek or a Hertl (bonafide top-line player).
 
My opinion on it is I won’t be surprised either way for a kid like Eklund. Could I see him making the coaching staffs decision really difficult, yes. I don’t think it’ll be a situation where we’re all sittin here like “yeah, Eklund looks way out of his depth”, either. Him starting the season in the AHL and playing well SHOULD happen and likely will. Expect a short window before a call up. A kid with his talent shouldn’t be stifled for the sake of making him “pay his dues “ before a call up though. If he lights it up in the pre season and has a good overall training camp, I would expect him to make the team.

I don’t think it’s a big concern if Eklund starts in the AHL as long as he tears it up and earns a midseason call up. If he struggles to produce at that level then it’s time to give up on him as a future first liner.
 
I’m genuinely intrigued if anyone has heard of a player who struggled in the minors and produced well in the NHL? Probably not a long list but I’m interested if there have been many guys who kinda had that opposite thing goin on.

Good, lets him develop and improves the Sharks' draft pick. Win-Win.

Timo was underwhelming in his 33 games in the ahl. Producing 23 points in those games.

Small very small sample but draisaitl also struggled with 2 points in 6 games.

Kadri was under a point per game also in his 3 seasons in the ahl.

Brad marchand.
Brayden point 4 in 9 games.

Just to name a few.

Jesus christ you are really quick to write off any prospect.

As someone pointed out - Meier had 14G 9A 23 points in 33 AHL games. Same season he has 3G 3A and 6P in 34 NHL games.

Thankfully, they didn't give up on him being a future first liner.
 
Eklund and Bordeleau playing with each other (presumably) will help both because of their already developed chemistry from last and this year.

Anyway, assuming they both start with the Cuda in a few weeks, it will be nice for that team to have a lot of young guys worth watching to see how they develop. Robins, Coe, Gushchin, Wiesblatt, Kniazev, Hatakka, Cicek, maybe Merkley, maybe Cardwell if he doesn't go back to junior.

Even with Karlsson at 2016 level that forward group would have a rough time of it.
