I’d take a flier on Joe for a full season as a face-puncher/ enforcer. He’s old skool, fighting is old
skool. The beard would take the sting off any potential haymakers. Just have the young guys come back to the bench and say “yo Jumbo, McDavid talking shit on Spin Doctors like a muthaf***a…. He also threatened to break your MiniDisc player.”

It’d be sad to watch, but I’d watch.

Watch that video of Jumbo skating, there’s no way he has another season in him. Marleau was real bad in his last season but at least he could skate. I think I’m faster than Jumbo now.

A five-second video of slow Joe during a before-camp practice doing something he's really uncomfortable doing (give-and-go and then receiving the puck to shooooooooot it Joe) is not indicative of his true game speed. Besides, he's here to punch faces, protect the small guys like Goosey, Eklund, and Birdy anyways.

Only 76 games to pass Marleau on the all time games played list.

The fact thornton is back in san jose/north america so early it means he has something lined up it seems. He had been staying in swiss land until he signed some where the past few years.

I wonder if grier is giving him the final year shark tour.

As someone said he only needs less then a seasons worth of games to pass marleau.

I don't really think Thornton wants to pass Marleau and I don't think he has it in him to actually play a full season anymore. Would be cool to bring him in as part of the staff in some context though

Would be fitting to have Jumbo as #1 and Patty in #2 in games played considering their draft positions.

Having Thornton play 74 games would be one way to embrace the tank.
Agree that I don't see that happening, last time he played that much was 7 seasons ago.

Jumbo: I didn't want anyone to retire for me.

GMMG: He retired so you could find what you have lost.

Jumbo: You're going to help me skate again?

GMMG: You will never skate again. But you will fly.

This reminds me of a very interesting question that was posed to me recently. Friend asked me, why does a caterpillar become a butterfly? No other animal in the world goes through what a caterpillar does to become a butterfly. Why not just grow old as a caterpillar, find a caterpillar mate and make caterpillar babies? Why does a caterpillar, who has a great life gorging on leaves and growing huge (have you seen the tomato hornworms in my garden?!) decide to drop everything, wrap itself in a chrysalis and then emerge as something completely different a week later. It is because......so that it can fly.

I think Jumbo is going through something similar.

if we're tanking I'd take him over some 4th line plug, unfortunately we paid a lot for some
The Sharks are moving in a new direction. Joe is/was an integral part of the old way of thinking/playing. IMO no need to further infect the youngsters. There's still enough remnants laying about

Jumbo came back because:
1. School starts in August and his kids need to go to school. With no contract this is the most logical home for his family.
2. His son is playing youth hockey and the season has started. He has been on the ice helping for over a month.

Not all decisions professional athletes make are strictly with their sport in mind. They are fathers and husbands and people who deal with life outside of their job.

Joe Thornton is loveable. But he's also a loser. If he's a part of the franchise, in any way, you have to take the good with the bad..

If the old way of thinking got us to a Cup Final and 3 conference finals in the span of less than a decade, I'd say bring that shit back ASAP.

Ah! Says you. Peel in teal was very much alive then
DW's idea of toughness was taking the hit to make the play

and your idea of toughness is what, Owen Nolan's teams?

I forget, how many Cups did he bring us? Cup Finals? Conference Finals?!
