Well you have to assume the guys you’re picking are destined for the NHL, no? It’s kind of the job criteria.
You have to hope that they are, but not assume anything. Ideally, the scouts are very aware that late in the draft, they're picking the best American wine.

He skipped world juniors to focus on making the Sharks. Played in a rookie game tonight against the Ducks. He was in on all 3 Sharks goals, scoring 2 of them and had the primary assist on the other. He was clearly the most impactful player on the ice. I don’t think he is going to be denied a roster spot on the Sharks.
oh wow. this makes me pretty happy. I think this kid is going to be amazing. I just wish I could watch him more often without getting the NHL package. I suppose streaming could work but my comp always crashes in them now its a old pos

Now that there has been the first sample size with Rookie Faceoff Game 1, I think it's fair to say and acknowledge that Eklund and Bordeleau are the only ones really competing for NHL spots so far.
They both seem to be on the same timeline, and I would love a healthy competition this year with them let's say both chase being rookie of the year.
I love it!

I mean I think Hatakka Raska and Reedy all showed they might challenge for lower roster spots.

So the best example is from 10 years ago. I agree defensemen can take longer but in recent years the ones that are actually turning out more than #4 level are usually breaking down the door which I don’t think Merkley has been doing really.

Now don’t get me wrong I agree with you that you can’t write Merkley off yet at all and I’d love to see him on the NHL and this isn’t some make or break year for him but I think if he’s not breaking down the door this year, I think that should show he’s probably not going to turn out like we all hoped.
Tony D has to be the best example, no? Small, poor defense, attitude issues. Drafted in 2014 and doesn't break out until 2019.

The fact thornton is back in san jose/north america so early it means he has something lined up it seems. He had been staying in swiss land until he signed some where the past few years.

I wonder if grier is giving him the final year shark tour.

As someone said he only needs less then a seasons worth of games to pass marleau.

I don't really think Thornton wants to pass Marleau and I don't think he has it in him to actually play a full season anymore. Would be cool to bring him in as part of the staff in some context though

Would be fitting to have Jumbo as #1 and Patty in #2 in games played considering their draft positions.

I hope this isn't leading to a signing, unless we're talking about a 1 day contract

Joe is burnt crispy, he's got nothing left to offer on the ice, signing him would run counter to the organizational push to only give roster spots based on merit, he's not one of our 15 best forwards at this stage

I know that's the organization philosophy now but I am willing to make one spot a non-merit based spot. Call it the "Legacy" seat. These old guys are good for the organization and have a ton to offer. Imagine what it would be like to have Jagr here when Hertl was first coming up. Roenick when he was here was definitely an influence on Pavs.
