I don't mind being the worst team in the league going towards the end of the year.
It’s definitely better than being where Vancouver and St. Louis are.I don't mind being the worst team in the league going towards the end of the year.
While I do get that, losing this bad/getting a higher draft pick makes me feel better about the direction we are going in compared to being a mediocre/forgetful team like last year.I get what many here are saying but this sucks. This actually twists my stomach to see my beloved team losing this way.
No one needs to explain to me why this is, I do understand. It just sucks.
Let's hope it ends better than that deal did.I'm kind of hoping for the Balcers deal ($1.5/2).
Market value per his player card (updated last week) is $2.9M. I think a 2 year deal at $2-2.5M is fair. Then see how he does with a full offseason on a new team. Qualifies for UFA after the 2026-27 season (aka 4 years of team control after this one) so plenty of time to establish his value to the org before making the mid-long term extension decision.I'm kind of hoping for the Balcers deal ($1.5/2).
There were tweets from prior to the Mercer ask (which I doubt ever went very far) that Zetterlund was a player that the Sharks liked a lot. And from there, it shouldn't be a GM decision to demote him or not if his production is lacking. Would be far too much micro managing. Coach is in charge of the lineup. GM is in charge of the roster and acquiring players that the coach wants/needs to fit the mutually agreed to style of play. From there, it should be mostly hands off and let the coach cook.Let's hope it ends better than that deal did.
Do we have proof, or at least smoke, that Grier specifically targeted Zetterlund? You don't demote someone like that to the fourth line after just a couple of ho-hum games.

Aside from making sure Eklund's time in the NHL was successful, man Tortorella would've been great for this team. By the time he's done in Philly he will have forced some players out. Sure could've used that in SJ.
You’re joking right? Vlasic and Torts would become best friends due to their mutual adoration of Dogs.
This would lead to Vlasic being named captain, and given another eight year extension.
Short-term (3-4 years) pain for long-term gain (10+ years of success with the next core). This is the way.I get what many here are saying but this sucks. This actually twists my stomach to see my beloved team losing this way.

When exactly does that 3-4 years of pain start? Cause it's been pretty painful for a few seasons nowShort-term (3-4 years) pain for long-term gain (10+ years of success with the next core). This is the way.

sleeper agent to ruin their tankHunter McCown, a San Jose kid, just signed with Columbus. I thought it’d be nice for him to come home.
With the sort of pieces this team needs and the way they're typically going to get it, they need at least two more elite level pieces in order to compete. Three if they end up trading Karlsson. They also need time to finish tearing the team down. When exactly does that 3-4 years of pain start? Cause it's been pretty painful for a few seasons now
Hoping that forces Farabee (BU kid so hello Grier/Quinn) to SJ. Be a nice reclamation project after an awful year with Torts and the public spat between Torts and Farabee's agent. If we win the Bedard lottery, I have a sneaking suspicion that one of the NJD picks will be spent on a guy like that.Aside from making sure Eklund's time in the NHL was successful, man Tortorella would've been great for this team. God I hope not. Our defense is still dreadful. If we are going to spend our first on someone let it be a defenseman.Hoping that forces Farabee (BU kid so hello Grier/Quinn) to SJ. Geezus another forward?! I dont want to prioritize spending assets on another forward, especially if we trade Karlsson. We're gonna get a good forward in the draft and we should focus our eyes on defensemen.
Farabee seems to be a slightly more skilled Donato, and I would think that would be an easy pass, at least from Grier. I really hope this offseason Grier doesn't focus on adding more depth players. I LOVE Jordan Spence though, and I think him or most of the players you suggested would be solid targets, but I think LA has high hopes for him and they wouldn't even think to trade him to SJ anyways. I think he's replacing Durzi. I'm a big fan of player swaps though (Merk-Kaut, Suomela-Barabanov). I would be totally down for a Bordeleau-Spence swap with all of the DFD-TWD the Sharks have added, so I hope Grier continues to go that route to add instead of pick trading or even FA signings. I hope they don't sign anyone this offseason even on D.God I hope not. Our defense is still dreadful. If we are going to spend our first on someone let it be a defenseman.
I don’t know if I’d do this just because he hasn’t played this year but I’d be open to our 2nd for Kylington.
A few other guys I’d like to target: Spence, Chatfield, Bahl, Bolduc, Schneider, Jones

Yup. Between needing to get lucky with goaltending, for all intents and purposes completely make over the blue line, and needing at least three legitimately great forwards, they're going to need a lot to get to competitive status. They can get a lot of the secondary and tertiary depth options well enough but to refill the top of the lineup tends to mean getting it through the draft for this team. We don't have the expendable assets to trade for the top of the lineup players and won't be a desirable location through free agency. From just off the top of my head, the cores of the great Chicago and Kings teams (and Tampa to a lessor extent) were largely built over the course of 3-4 consecutive drafts. Again IIRC, both also found NHL contributors in the middle and later rounds - it’s gonna take more than a few high first rounders to turn this thing around.

Point is the #1C on a team that almost won three Cups in a row, he absolutely deserves as much respect as Kuch or VasyIt's critical to note that all three of those teams found superstars outside of the very top of the first round. Chicago with Keith, LA with Kopitar and Quick, and Tampa Bay with Vasilevisky and Kuchereov (and, arguably, Point?).
