IIRC, someone on here actually said Labanc was better than Vrana. Hilarious. Think it was STL (ironic).
Said no such thing, but keep trying. I was actually an advocate for acquiring him as a cap dump if you got DET to throw in a 3rd round pick and putting him on his fellow countryman's wing.

To that end though, nobody has ever disputed Vrana when he's motivated and playing hard is good. Reason he got dumped by WSH in the Mantha deal is because he doesn't play that way often. Add in the substance abuse issues that had him in the NHLPA Player Assistance Program and the contract and the whole package is not overly enticing. STL made a smart gamble getting DET to retain 50% on a bad contract, but those are more likely the risks you take when you're doing that retool on the fly thing rather than building a culture.

Looking at Fantilli’s stats as a freshman and he has been dominant. He is now nominated for the Hobey Baker. Looks like whoever doesn’t get Bedard will still get a great player in Fantilli.

Here’s an excerpt from NHL.com about his year:

“Fantilli (6-foot-2, 195 pounds), a freshman at the University of Michigan, leads Division I with 60 points (27 goals, 33 assists) in 32 games. The 18-year-old center also scored five points (two goals, three assists) in seven games to help Canada win a gold medal at the 2023 IIHF World Junior Championship.”

My thinking--make of it what you will from a psychological standpoint--is that I'll be very pleased if the Sharks end up with Fantilli, so getting Bedard--while unexpected on my part--would pretty much put me over the moon.

In a way, I kinda think Fantilli is a better fit for us. I still want Bedard more, but I think Fantilli is a high end C who will also be incredibly
reliable in all 3 zones. Having Fantilli - Hertl - Couture (or Bordeleau) down the middle is a great place to be.

So, in 2 months, we went from our best defensive prospect being Knyzhov, to having Thrun, Mukh, Pulli and Okhotiuk.

You gotta give Grier credit here, that’s really good work.
Well Knyzhov is playing like a top-pair D right now, so the Sharks have FIVE top pairing D now?? Grier has an embarrassment of riches! (I think Thrun and Muk are the only NHLers out of those 4)

I think Okhiutuk might be a good bottom pairing D. Pulli I have no idea yet. But it’s significantly better than what we had before.

Vlasic is definitely not part of the book club. He said the last book he read was recommended to him by former general manager Doug Wilson, but he couldn’t remember the name and couldn’t remember the book he finished before that one.
Insert joke about the book being about retirement, bad financial decisions, or the performance stipulation clauses in his contract.

Glad we sucked in OT this year. Timing is everything in life.
We've thrown away so many points this year--from winning positions and in OT. It's quite bleak when you think about it, a remarkable amount of futility that has propelled this team to depths in the standings that I'd say are worse than they should be (when accounting for talent and lack of injuries to key players).

Of course, it's the perfect year to bomb so badly, so you have to say their timing is kind of perfect in that regard, too.
