Odd trade, wonder if that means that Eyssimont on his own had zero value...this way at least Grier gets something for Namestnikov w/ extra retention.

My theory is Grier figures Zetterlund can take Eyssimont’s place and Kaut can come back and play with Hertl. I’m sure Namestnikov is gone unless they have a good trade set up for Sturm and need a stopgap.

Don’t think Grier’s plans are shared with the marketing people but I also wonder if this is actually about a Sturm and Bonino trade… just to have someone play C.

Zetterlund-Couture-Barabanov
Johnsson-Hertl-Kaut
Svechnikov-Namestnikov-Gregor
Lindblom-Lorentz-Gadjovich

What a forward group to lose with.

In seriousness I don't see Sturm moving. Bonino yes, because he's a proven veteran and elite penalty killer. And he takes faceoffs right handed so he's exotic.

Assuming we dump Namestnikov, Bonino, and Reimer, how pathetic is this team?

Labanc-Hertl-Zetterlund
Gregor-Couture-Barabanov
Johnsson-Sturm-Svechnikov
Lindblom-Lorentz-Kaut

MacDonald-Karlsson
Ferraro-Benning
Vlasic-Simek

Kahkonen
Dell

I hope we atleast play some rookies next year so there is something exciting worth watching...because right now we're playing 48, 39, and 65 with absolute plyons.

You're all looking at this wrong. We've been thinking that they're rebuilding to go to the playoffs, but with yesterday's trade they're now headed once again for the play-ovs.

Seriously though, assuming there are no additional moves today, I will be staying up late tonight to get hopefully just one shift of a modern Ov line.

Eklund will play and maybe Bordeleau. Otherwise, we don't have anything remotely resembling a forward prospect that should sniff the NHL next year.

Depending on lottery luck we could have another. And you never know which young guy could push for a bottom-6 role after off-season training.

On defense Muhk/Thrun/Kniasev/etc. could also have a good off-season plan and take a guy like Simek's spot on the third pair. I mean we just had Scott Harrington playing on our defense.

I have a feeling Grier is going to be very active in the off-season. He mentioned how important the off season was going to be in an interview. I wouldn’t be shocked if it’s a very different team next fall. I think part of his strategy seems to be taking a flyer on waiver guys, reclamation projects, etc. I can see him keeping Svech and Sturm, but I think Labanc, Gregor, Lindblom and Johnsson (unless he shows something down the stretch and signs at a minimum are gone).

Next year is:

Eklund - Hertl - ??
Zetterlund - Couture - Barabanov
??(Bordeleau?) - Sturm - ?? (Kaut?)
?? - Lorentz - Svechnikov

And defense is like…

?!! - !!?
Vlasic - Benning
Thrun - ?!? (Okhotiuk?)

Soooo…

There is a good third and fourth line in there somewhere. There is an avg second line in there somewhere. There is no first line and no top 4 defense lol

Well, if Eklund performs and we can get them a good winger in FA, it’s not a bad first line…?

But yeah, the D is.. yeah. Grier seems to be actively trying to remake the D so we’ll see what he manages to do. I forgot Ferraro in my breakdown too. If we get Fabbro it’s probably like:

Fabbro - Ferraro
Thrun - Benning
Vlasic - Okhotiuk

…they will get 4 points between them.

I’d actually be really interested to see how either Kaut or Zetterlund does on that 1st line.

I still highly doubt Karlsson gets moved. It’s just such a difficult trade. If he does get moved though there will obviously be some contracts coming back so those will fill some of those spots. The Karlsson trade to me feels like a lot like Tavares in FA. We get rumored until the end and we miss out.

Going out on a limb here but once Krejci and Bergeron retire, Boston's gonna be in desperate need of a top 6 center. I wonder if they could look into Hertl once the cap starts to rise. Maybe capitalize on that Czech connection with Pasternak.

That bottom pairing might not ever get a puck out of the DZ haha. Book on Okhotiuk is he's fast and plays physical but can't move the puck. Vlasic is average to slow, plays passive, and can't move the puck.

If Karlsson is moved, we will probably target a young puck moving RHD in the deal (think Bouchard type) or target someone cheap in UFA to play 2nd pairing and PP. Think Grier has shown that while he isn't going to go out and jeopardize a rebuild/retool, he also doesn't want to put guys in roles that they aren't built for as much as possible and stunting their development. Not having anyone that can remotely run a power play would be a growth killer for guys like Eklund and Co.

No point assuming Karlsson gets moved until there is a team rumoured to be interested with an actual need for him. That was the Oilers, but now they have Ekholm for a while. Next year's D is probably:

Thrun-Karlsson (Thrun gets the Megna treatment)
Ferraro-Benning
Vlasic-Okhotyuk
Simek
