What does “solid” mean? Like Burns?

Couture isn’t going anywhere. If he were, he’d have been moved last summer.
It could be that Grier just didn't want to go full scorched earth his first month as a GM. The interest from other teams probably isn't really there, but it could be that Grier is just now making it known that he's available.

Didn’t Grier say that he had conversations with all the vets? The fact that Burns was traded and Couture, Vlasic, etc. remained said to me that the latter group didn’t want to be traded.

Maybe Couture thought the Sharks would be better, and he reconsiders this summer? Probably the best case for us.

If we can drop Meier, Couture and Karlsson we sure will be in a great position to suck for a while. The issues come with retaining on those deals because they last so long.

Or they couldn't be traded.

GMs seem to be locked into conservative mode. If the cap starts shooting up again, you'll see them take on big contracts once again.

Sure, I think that's more likely. But if we assume that Couture does have some kind of value (not much, but that he's at least movable) based on Sheng's article, then those two options are the only possibilities, both of which say something interesting about Couture.

As interesting as DWJR's drafting philosophy was, it just hasn't planned out at all. You could get away with this kind of drafting if you had a locked in stone core but that's not good enough for rebuild drafting
I think the idea makes sense --- take big swings at the draft, sign depth players. I think the flaw is partly in the assumption that you can assessing who has a high ceiling or not. I don't think this attribute is any more predictable than any other.

I don't even know if he can be claimed after he was just bought out. Isn't there some sort of rule against that
I think that’s specifically about trading or signing for a player. They don’t want a team to buy out someone and then signing for minimum somewhere else and then team A trades for him. I dont think waivers would quite be the same

Norris, Merkley, Eklund, Wiesblatt, Bystedt. That’s five picks, no?
Bystedt is in 2022 (not counted). Wiesblatt was technically a first-round pick (the poorest man's first, if you will).

A lot of this is going to hinge on those last two drafts. Of course, anything can happen, but outside of Karlsson in 2018, I don't think there's much else to gain from 2017-2019. 2020 and 2021 have promise...

going to 2/6 on 2nds isn’t great, but getting a Bordeleau or Ferraro every three years is probably above average. Gambrell as a borderline NHL guy.

Unfortunately, the team is 1/35ish all time in 3rd round picks as well, thanks to Greiss (and maybe Guschkin/Gaudreau) it won’t be a complete offer.

On Couture, I know some people are down on him as a leader, but I think he’s probably a decent guy to have in a rebuild. Give Hertl the tough matchup and staple Couture to the hot shot prospect. On the flip side, he’s such a good playoff performer I’d like to see him get a chance to chase a cup. He’s a perfect third/fourth forward for a team for any top team. If you could get value, I’d be fine retaining heavily on him. Burns, Couture, EK, and Meier can all be retained on if Meier moves this year.

No one will want Vlasic even at 50%, so aside from Ferraro- and crafty throw-ins/deadline deals- no retention spots isn’t the biggest issue in the world.

They’re long contracts but that would pretty much assure three years of bottom 6 picks+ this year.

Of course if you get Bedard, you probably don’t move everyone.

Just for fun, because what else is there to do, what are some predictions for lines next year? Who makes it from the AHL? Who is traded from the NHL?

My guess is something like:

Eklund - Hertl - (someone we get in Meier trade)
Eyssimont - Couture - Barabanov
Gregor - Bordeleau - FA/Player from Trade
Lorentz - Sturm - Gadjovich/Svechnikov etc.

Knyzhov - Karlsson
Vlasic - Benning
Ferraro - MacDonald

Though it’d be nice if we got a defensive prospect through trade and could push Vlasic down.

Now, if we get Bedard and have him center the 2nd line, with Couture on the 3rd and Bordeleau on wing - that’s actually a fairly fun forward group. Needs more surefire top 6 wingers, but you know.

That defense still is just atrocious.

After going through the trade threads on the main boards, it's hopeless discussing trade talks with Rangers fans. Will Cuylle is seen as an unmovable piece by them.

I think it will be ugly that's for sure. If I had to take a big swing in the pitch black though:

Eklund-Hertl-Barabanov
Gregor-Couture-FA
Lorentz-Sturm-Bordeleau
Eyssimont-Reedy-Gadjovich

Ferraro-FA
Megna-Benning
Vlasic-MacDonald

Kahkonen
FA

That's with the sharks drafting someone who will not make the NHL, and Meier and EK getting traded.

I could see Kaut playing and if we get a top 6 pick, I think there's a small chance they play some NHL games.

It'll be interesting to see what happens with Kaut, because it'll point to Grier's thought process. If they re-sign him, then they actually liked him as a player. If they left him go, then it was really just about helping the AHL squad and jettisoning Merkley.

I feel like if Kaut keeps being good in the AHL, I can see him getting a cup of coffee on the NHL team to see if he can do something before they make a decision.

So Horvat just got Raty and a mid first. Meier should easily get more than that
