3 years to late, but finally.
Buyout isn't too bad, with nearly $4M savings next year and a -$2M hit next year, but I feel like we'd be better off just keeping him for a year and selling him for a 3rd-5th at the deadline. He's probably our 4/5th best forward, even if he doesn't play 'winning hockey'. In summary, I guess I don't really care, but I do think Labanc could bring something elsewhere. Can't see him being worth much to someone else with the extra year at nearly $5M, and I'd would leverage one of our two remaining retention spots. Those should be saved for Meier (if not traded this year), Karlsson, and Couture.
It feels to me that Meier and Karlsson won't make it past next year's TDL. Given the way he's played, it's not completely out of the realm of possibility that Couture joins them.
Aside from Hertl- and retained trades/buyout penalties- I'm not sure there is a guy who is certain to be on the team in two years.
Bonino, Reimer, and Megna are likely gone at the deadline. Meier and Karlsson by the draft. Barbanov and Labanc aren't Grier type players and have one year (at good/awful value respectively). Lindbom, Simek, and Kunin are mediocre and have one full year left, but could be late round/deep depth pickups next deadline. Kahkonen, based on play thus far, shouldn't be re-signed. Sturm's an ideal 4th C at a fair price, maybe someone squints and hopes he can be a 3C. Otherwise, I could see him playing out his contract, as the team will need a few vets. Ferraro and Benning may stay for the same reason.
I could see Vlasic making it another year- or even two- but three seems pretty unfathomable.
