Yeah, there are no absolute quick fixes for the Sharks. The problem with trading Meier is that it would signify a rebuild - something that Plattner has repeatedly stated he doesn't want. And if/when the Sharks are ready to contend, it's going to cost a lot more for the Sharks to replace that production.
From a salary cap perspective, it makes more sense to ship out Lebanc and Ferraro to cover a huge part of Meier's cap hit if anyone wants them.
I’d hope that Plattner could be convinced that there simply isn’t the core to attempt some sort of retool. I applaud his willingness to spend to the cap, and sign off on long term high commitment contracts, in a lukewarm market for all those year. It genuinely meant something to me that he was willing to back the play for UFA Tavares - but one would hope he could see that this team isn’t a superstar forward or two away from being a contender.
Beyond the miracle acquisition of an entire second line, a complete second pairing, and a solution in net - there is no amounting of squinting that makes this something remotely resembling a competitive roster.
