The Kings are still playing for Todd. They haven't tuned him out. I still see guys hustling and trying.

They just need to tighten up and get more systematic.

The schedule makers haven't really done the Kings any favors here early in the season. Very minimal time in between games to work on this stuff.
Do you see the flaw in your logic. It’s not that they stopped playing, it’s because the coach doesn’t know what to do . And it’s showing. He’s not a new coach.

They look like a poorly coached team, with bad roster construction.

I'm not a Todd hater. I have my criticisms of him, but overall I think he's just an average coach.

That said, the Kings are showing symptoms of a poorly coached team; lack of structure, undisciplined, sloppy, terrible special teams ect.

They should be able to clean a lot of this up, so I'm somewhat optimistic, but the goaltending issues aren't going away, and there's not much that can be done about it.
Not that I would've done what Blake did (needed a LD, would've gone for a goalie although I understand why) but half the poor construction is based on having a coach who is clueless. Missing one skater isn't a sign of bad construction. Todd just puts together awful lines and forgets how to put players together who work. For example, Kempe/Fiala can't play together with how they both play besides offensively.

We have guys like Bjornfot who could provide some semblance of defense unlike Durzi on the left, and for some reason they're having Mikey play like he has offensive talent.

TMac doesn't know how to coach a young team with a lot of offensive potential. Blake's slient message regarding a LHD, "we are not gonna acquire a vet LHD, but instead work things out and develop our young d-men". Blake poorly addressed goaltending. Quick's age has caught up and Blake bet too much on Petersen being their next #1 and he's appears to be a bust. Copley outplayed both Quick and Petersen in preseason, yet they sent him to the Reign due to both Quicks/Petersen cap hits. I will never understand why any GM has a vet goalie making $5.8 million and then decides to give a younger unproven goalie $5 million, when instead he should have given a big chunk of that $5 million to a vet LHD?

I like him as a player but him and Kempe on the same line is redundant. I think you move Fiala to the second line with Gabe and Danault. Or better yet move Kopitar to the second line and get his minutes down to 18 a game on pp number 2 with his greatest hits buddy Doughty.

I agree split up Kempe and Fiala.. but Its a hard problem to solve. because really Kopi is the one who should move down he's so methodical in his play its much better suited to the 3rd line. The 2nd line i would not tamper with moore and danault.. could put GV on the 1st lie and and move arvy to the 3rd, fiala with moore and danault 2 very responsible guys.

Gosh that Peterson contract is so insane. It didn't make sense when it was signed and it sure doesn't make any sense now

I could be wrong, I doubt it, but Fiala sure seems to take some ridiculously long shifts.

Remember the Kings were sloppy and messy to start last year as well, but they got it dialed in.

For years the Kings have struggled to score goals, but right now they're top 10 in the league in scoring. That should be acknowledged.

I don't think that all that new found offense has to be sacrificed to clean up the defense.

Also, like f***ing clockwork:

*team signs one-dimensional scoring forward*
*player doesn't check appropriately*
*gets demoted and stops scoring*
*but still can't check*

They brought in Kovalchuk to play with Kopitar. Lasted what 2 weeks?
Then they brought in Arvidsson. Lasted a couple weeks and they had to break up the Iafallo-Danult-Kempe line that was really hot at the time to give Kopitar the best playing wingers. Arvidsson and Moore found some chemistry with Danault a little later on.
Then they brought in Fiala. They cant Kovalchuk him after that extension so maybe Byfield finally finds a mate in Fiala.
Maybe this is the last player they bring in for Kopitar and realize its not the goalscorers they are bringing in at fault for how they play.

If Todd realizes he's the HC and that the forwards need to help out in the dzone with some level of effort, forward lines need to change asap. Vilardi deserves a top line role, need to get Kaliyev/Fiala each with a pair of guys who can cover up their lapses

Kempe-Kopitar-Vilardi
Moore-Danault-Kaliyev
Grundstrom-Byfield-Fiala
JAD/Lemieux-Lizotte-Arvidsson

Then you find a dman (not Chychrun) who can stabilize the PK and in the D zone, and a goalie while you dump Cal on Arizona/Chicago or waivers. Boston has Swayman who needs a new contract, is struggling but better than the numbers, and they already have Ullmark who took the net

Arvidson is a 3rd line player if that. If we still can’t stop the titanic from sinking into our net every night by playoffs he will fetch a nice draft pick and and free up cap space next year.

Moore needs to stay, Vilardi has locked down a forward spot, and Arty is quietly outing up good numbers while being as inconsistent as his ice time has been.

Kempe and Fiala are not going anywhere and they are good goal-scorers. Moore brings a ton to the table and Iafollo is one of x pensive ass third liner when he comes back.

Byfield can come along on the third line and not hurt us. That’s all too 9 forward positions locked down for a long time!

The D is a colllection of Gi joes Doughty and Clarke) thunder cats(Anderson and Spence) transformers/turnovers (Durzi) 2 broken go bots (Roy and Walker) and one Swedish pet rock carbon dating to know how old it really is (Edler).

Fiala and Arty need to swap and RV in for Grundstrom.

Not bad ideas but I think Grundstrom has outplayed Arvidsson so far and he could use a reduced role to ease back from the injury. With Fiala/Arty, I don't think Arty/Byfield have been that great a match, Danault/Moore can play with Arty and cover up his speed/defense issues, and Fiala's best play was with Boldy, a speed forward who can carry the puck and dish it well

One problem. Vegas is better. They changed their coach and groomed their young goalie Thomas who looks poised to steal the #1 job from Lehner, even when Lehner is healthy again next season. Kings at best will be fighting for a Wild Card spot. Flames, Oilers and Vegas will battle each other for the 3 playoff spots in the Pacific Division.

A reminder for some people who still don't understand: putting all your highest paid players together doesn't mean it's the best decision.

It's been pretty apparent for a while that the Kempe - Kopitar - Fiala line has lacked chemistry. The idea was Kopitar was the defensive center, Kempe would be the triggerman, and Fiala would be the one creating opportunities. It's often been disjointed.

With Arvidsson's struggles, might as well play him alongside Kempe and Kopitar. He's at least to playing in a more defensive mindset, playing on Danault's line.

Vilardi would then at least get promoted to playing on the Danault line - he's more than earned the opportunity. And Moore - Danault just have so much chemistry, I think they'd make it work with Vilardi as well.

Fiala playing on a line with Byfield and Kaliyev would be great as he has two young players who love to shoot that he could pass to.

Grundstrom has played well, too, and just meshes so well with the grinding/energy of Lizotte's line.

Clarke getting zero time on the powerplay, and less shorthanded time than Durzi still makes me laugh.

Edit: decided to look it up to confirm my suspicions. Cole Perfetti was the Jets' first round pick from 2020 (same as Byfield):
Byfield's average TOI: 11:46
Perfetti's average TOI: 15:39

Byfield'd statline this season: 8 GP, 0 G, 3 A, 3 Pts
Perfetti's statline this season: 7 GP, 2 G, 3 A, 5 Pts

Just in case you need a reminder:
LA: 4-5-0
WPG: 4-3-0

So an equally successful team puts an equally young player in a position to succeed, and he's performing well so far.

Yes. Despite that had Quick made 1 or 2 more saves, the Kings win this or at least take it to OT! Defensive mistakes or not, you still need your goalie to step up. Quick was just flat out bad tonight. He has only had one good game and that was the 4-2 win against the Bolts.

I heard on the streets that Quick's dealer was arrested so Cal gave him his dealers contact info. Sheesh!

Who thought it was a good idea to hire a coach that could never get the Sharks to a cup and think he would somehow do it here?

Lets face it.

With 19 shots against you will win 9 out of 10 times.

Unfortunately not last night.

If they do this every night we will win a lot of games
