GDT: 2022-23 season game 78 LA Kings vs Edmonton Oilers @7:30 pm 4/4/23

Grundstrom, who has been one of the Kings better players of late, sees a whopping 6 minutes of ice time the whole game, in what is an important playoff seeding game. There is no rhyme or reason to this asshats coaching decisions.

because he was bad and was not even trying most shift. then in the 3rd, the bench was shortened.

Disagree on Byfield, when you shoot the puck and your stick breaks as the defender slashes it making contact, it always been called. Even if it was damaged earlier in the shift, it a visual call. Do you think they wouldn't call it if it was Mcdavid?

Ok, I will bite, where was the stick slashed?

I have no idea if they would call if it was McDavid or not, let's not act like McDavid hasn't been mugged before with no calls....keep it on what actually happens....

Time to move Byfield off the first line. He's all hustle and no finish right now. Maybe drop him to 3rd line center and move down Lizotte (he's been shit recently). Move Kupari to wing on the 4th if need be.

this should have been done weeks ago....at this point Iafallo should be playing there. Note- Byfield is playing more physical which is good to see.

I think ALL The lines need shuffling right now

Moore started looking better later on though, fortunately. He's clearly not all the way back.

I might try Grundstrom or Kupari next to Kopitar for a few shifts and give Byfield his own line for a game or two.

Right below where it snapped. he one handed the slash , made contact right at the bottom and it broke as he shot it. I've seen that play happen a dozen times and it called. Even Byfield was like wtf? As for McDavid, if he's shooting the puck, as contact is made with his stick , then it's snapped, it getting called for sure.

A one handed "slash" nowhere near the hands, and the stick breaks at the flex......that's not a slash...not even close to a slash....he gets him in the hands, sure, that's been called all year......that play where it was basically blade on blade, isn't a slash.

I can see all the purse clutchers are out in full force, OMG we will never win another game, etc players suck, coaches suck etc,

Playing 7 games in 11 days, 3 games in 4 days, missing two very good offensive threats, their top shut down LD, and it took a lucky bounce and a Danault brain fart, to get beat....

Yea, very convinced a lot of people don't have a solid grasp on reality here

Missed this part of the broadcast:

haha yeah, during the GDT I noted that, ddn't go back to look and see who did it cause i thought for sure it would get called, oiler grabbed a handful of iafallos mop and yanked him by it...truly insane what they get away with at times. 2013 Bruins-ish.

But honestly, good for them. I WISH our team was dirty enough at this point.

I said it before and asked a few to bookmark it, Oilers are the favorite post-Ekholm and will win the division, I want to stay away from them more than anyone else. Hope we beat Vegas tomorrow and EDM wins out

Dunno if it's what I like about his game vs the amount of shit thrown at him from this board that makes ZERO sense....

He's lost a bit of his fire....but that's not necessarily a bad thing, it means he's playing in control more, he's 2nd in points, 2nd in blocked shots, 2nd in takeaways,

No one is saying he doesn't make mistake, show me a player who doesn't....but they are very few and far between these days, and the kid is what, 23 years old when most D don't hit their stride til 25 etc...
I formed my opinion of him over many games both last year and this year. Maybe I'll take a step back and review his play more closely as it stands today.. I still lots of chaos in the d-zone when he's out there... unnecessary risky plays. But maybe he's more effective than he looks.

Just glad no new injuries.

The results right now are more due to who we are missing than anything else. We are missing the matchup advantage we enjoyed for most of the year.

Not worried about results down the stretch, just stay healthy and get guys back.

Maybe, but it seems like you might be attributing the "lots of chaos" to one player instead of a 5 player unit etc.....

He's definitely changed his game from last year to this year......like I said, seems like he is more in control, he's definitely more aware of positioning defensively etc.

No Im definitely noticing he gets him self into weird situations all on his own by improvising.. What I want in the d-zone is predictability so my partner knows where Im going to be and how Ill handle things. Durzi seems to be more of a solo artist / improvisor than Id like in the d-zone. I do like that he is looking to make plays all the time on offense - definitely has vision for the long pass and creativity there. The big thing is he cant skate himself out of trouble or recover to chase down an opponent. That will never change - so I see him as limited upside defensively.

I dunno, we are seeing different things then for sure.....maybe looking at the same play differently.....

There are times he ties to do too much, absolutely, but from my observations that is the anomaly not the norm

I would love to have the ability and the time, to break it down more using just clips of his play....but I have zero time, and not much ability lol

this....he is a bottom pairing PP specialist....TMac trying to make him Top4 in spite of the glaring flaws defensively

I mean.... He kinda has no choice but to play Durzi in a top 4 role right now given injuries. Who is he supposed to put in Durzi's spot last night?? Walker?? Bjornfot?? Come on now. And recently, when fully healthy, Durzi has been in a bottom pairing/PP specialist role

It would be fun to actually break things down with video and point things out.. get away from opinion and a few stats - because it doesnt tell the whole story. Like I said before, I got your point and will try to look at him without some previous bias.

This.

Mikey is arguably the Kings best stay at home defender and Fiala & Vilardi are their two most creative players offensively.... Obviously with those 3 out beating a team like the Oilers is going to be tough.

On the bright side, they held the Oilers to 2 goals (not counting the empty netter last night) in each of the last two meetings.... That's actually fantastic especially considering they've been missing key players.

If/When healthy..... Kings in 6.

Part of the problem is normally I can't watch the game live, I record them....so I can't really come in to the GDT and say, see that is what I mean etc....

Played not to lose yet again by TM. I mean sure, you are short-handed..but give your team a chance.

How can someone who watches Durzi play every day still not see he should avoid him on the PK at all cost? Let alone starting off a PK. It's not so much Durzi's fault -- that's not his game (yet). But the coach needs to properly deploy this guy to utilize his strengths. Sometimes it seems like TM utilizes Durzi to maximize his weaknesses.

One last Durzi thing, what was that play with about 2:30 minutes left? Take the puck up and nobody around and shoot it down for icing. Such a classic Durzi play.

Kupari looks like a guy who is going to have a BIG time break out in 1-2 years. It's coming.

I wish Byfield had a mean edge to him. He's 20, so there's time. Still, i wish he was a lot more of a dick/ahole (so-to-speak) on the ice.

I can't stand the lack of hitting by this team. Hockey is a physical game -- but they play it like it's a friendly college game. It's been like this for about 4-5 years now. Always WAY out hit. And don't tell me it's about puck possession. They get out possessed many times. But the one constant is lack of hitting from this team. When they do hit and finish of checks, most times it's weak. This is an organizational issue. It's not the players. It's been built into them (or not built in -- lack of physical play and hitting).

I hope TM does not burn DD, Kopi, etc. out this last couple weeks and we get them at less than 100%.

I get that....but he got more ice time than Roy and Walker played arguably his best game vs Canucks and in no world should Durzi ever be playing the PK yet hes one of TMacs gotos. Even with the healthy dcorp pre edler injury Durzi is routinely getting 3rd most TOI. I like the guy but in no sane world should a guy with his lack of defense be getting that much TOI. Much like Kaliyev being stapled to the 4th line- there is no world where that role is one he would excel.

People are talking a lot about scrambling lines - in particular bumping Byfield down the lineup...

This is what I'd try (if healthy):
Vilardi - Kopitar - Kempe
- Big 1st line that isn't going to get pushed around & would be super effective along the boards, plus we know Gabe can find the back of the net more than QB at this point. I think this line worked more than people realized earlier in the season.. Kempe and Kopitar were just really snake-bit when Gabe got a shot with them
Fiala - Danault - Arvidsson
- Solid 2nd line, with Fiala they should produce more offensively
Byfield - Kupari - Iafallo
Moore - Lizotte - Grundstrom
- The bottom 6 you can shake up a lot obviously, but I'd try elevating Kupari's role for a couple games at least. Lizotte also hasn't looked great and is ideally more suited for a 4C role anyways.
