Little thought experiment I did today. With a couple of exceptions, these players would all be 4th liners/3rd pairing on a good team, right?
Megna
Jones
Carrick
Grant
Silfverberg
Comtois
Leason
Benoit
White
Beaulieu
Shattenkirk
Good point. Some of these players wouldn't even crack rosters. At best, for the most part
Of those you listed, I'd say only Jones, Grant, Silf,, and Shattenkirk would for sure be guys that play regularly on a good team... maybe Comtois depending on his motivation. And yes, those 4 would be 4th line, bottom pairing.Little thought experiment I did today. With a couple of exceptions, these players would all be 4th liners/3rd pairing on a good team, right?

Megna - Healthy scratch
Jones - 4th line
Carrick - 3rd/4th liner
Grant -3rd/4th line
Silfverberg - 4th line/healthy scratch
Comtois - 4th line/ healthy scratch
Leason - healthy scratch
Benoit - 3rd pair
White - 3rd pair/ healthy scratch
Beaulieu - healthy scratch
Shattenkirk - 3rd pair
This is how I see it as well. I’d put Comtois in as a 4th liner as well, as I don’t see his defensive play as good enough for the average 3rd line. Leason keeps showing potential to be a middle 6 players for 2-3 games, then disappearing. Hoping he’s just a typical larger framed guy who takes longer to figure his frame out.Little thought experiment I did today. That is incredibly generous to the forwards.
Megna is decent - he can play on a fourth line. I actually like him better than Jones FWIW.
Jones - I guess he's a fourth line player though he doesn't produce results. I'd like to see him traded.
Carrick is not an NHL 4th liner this year - he's seemingly not healthy. He is the only guy on the ducks to bring fighting/toughness, so I'd keep him.
Grant - at best, a 4th liner on any other team. Faceoff value.
Silf - sadly, no longer an NHL caliber player.
Leason - scratch
Agree with your defensive ratings generally, though Shat is barely a 5/6 at this point. On a good team, he's probably a scratch/7.
Is Benoit a 3rd pairing player anywhere else but Chicago and Columbus? He seems in over his head most of the time - especially lately.
I agree with the consensus though that we have 4-5 players that can’t hack it in this league
I think Benoit is a guy with upside and could actually be a 4/5 with the right partner (which is not Shattenkirk). I view him as a maturing version of Manson (probably won't ever be that good).IMO, he's still a relatively good defender if you put him in well-defined tight areas in the corners and around the front of the net, but his foot speed is a major issue and is highlighted as a red flag on this team where the majority of defensemen are also poor skaters (hence why I thought he looked passable with Klingberg). It's also been exacerbated over the past few games because his partner is Shattenkirk, who has zero awareness of what's going on in his own end.
I would agree with the assessment that in a perfect world, he functions as your 7D in a Holzer-type role who can competently fill in for a few games if needed.

Considering the team around him has gotten worse, this is a good sign...
Is it? It's been raining nonstop today.in DC for work this week, but don't think i'll get to the game. too much to see in this great city, supposed to be very warm tomorrow!

I'm honestly surprised his defense only went up by 4 percent per those stats. I think a 20 is fair but last season he would have been closer to 0 for me. It was fun to watch him visibly have no idea what he was supposed to be doing in the defensive zone. Now he knows what to do he's just not good at it yet.
