There's been a bit of forward shuffling down in Texas. Aksiantsiuk is out, but Kawaguchi is back on an AHL deal. He was a staple late in the season on the top line at RW with Damiani (playing center) and Kero. I could see them keeping Kero and Kawaguchki together to play with Bourque. It would allow them to spread the rookies/new to North America on different lines: Bourque, Stranges, Blumel.

I'm actually giving up on finding the exact info for sure on Karlstrom's veteran status regarding the AHL veteran rule. He either puts them over the limit or they're fine with the Butcher addition on defense. He's just barely under the cutoff if HockeyAllsvenskan games don't count which seems likely or he's over that limit if they do. I couldn't find a definitive answer. He might even be an exemption based on age. Some sites suggested age is now factored in, but there's no mention of it on the AHL website that I could find.

The other also likely scenario is that Karlstrom isn't even sent to the AHL. Studenic still qualifies as a development player and could be waived. Olofsson doesn't require waivers, and he also is a development player. Texas will pretty easily be able to roll 4 lines deep.

Robertson-Hintz-Pavelski
Marchment-Johnston-Seguin
Benn-Faksa-Glendening
Olofsson-Peterson-Gurianov
Studenic
Kiviranta

Kero-Bourque-Kawaguchi
Stranges-Damiani-Barber
Karlstrom-Dellandrea-McKenzie
Tufte-Back-Blumel
Gardner
Caamano

Will definitely have to watch some Texas games this season. That team could be really fun. Even more fun if the Stars add Logan Morrison to that group

Imo Dellandrea will be in the NHL though. I think it's time. Guess it'll come down to what DeBoer thinks tho

I think it's time for Dellandrea and Damini too, but I think it's not likely also. Dellandrea IMO is going to get screwed by Dallas not cutting salary (if Faksa is traded, Dellandrea is a slam-dunk opening night roster player) and Jim Nill's aversion to waiving players. I could see Nill being hesitant (and probably rightfully so) to waive Karlstrom. He shouldn't be hesitant with waiving Studenic, and there's actually a pretty easy path for not having to waive either though (Olofsson going down to the AHL). He shouldn't be hesitant to waive Tufte at all, but would anyone be shocked if he's sweating that?

Dellandrea and Damiani are firmly in Oettinger's position last year IMO. They may be the better option, but the salary cap/waiver status may have already made the decision. Nill has shown a greater willingness to waive players lately, but that was also with players that it was long, long overdue. I don't buy that the Honka, Nemeth, and Oleksiak days are behind him where he'll hold roster spots up rather than make room on the roster until his hands are tied.

Waivers for the first time in a few years are going to be a bit more interesting when the season starts just because of guys like Karlstrom. He's good. You don't want to lose him, but I don't know that he's better than either Damiani or Dellandrea, but I'd absolutely take a bet that he could earn a spot over either simply because of his waiver status. I'd be more inclined to believe that Nill would consider waiving Kiviranta to make more spots open, but I'd not take a chance putting any money on that. His performance was improved enough in the playoffs I could see Nill wanting to hoard him.

Bored and have a ton of free time...kinda wanna make a Johnston or Stankoven highlights video...I might not sure tho it's so much work

If I did, would yall be more interested in like a best points type of video, or an all goals type of video? Like I said tho no promises, it's a lot of work and I might not have the attention span for that while taking care of a puppy

Personally I prefer best plays, they’re more fun to watch.

I also like the full shift-by-shift videos, but those seem a lot more rare and isolated to scouting.

Have fun with a puppy, I have two dogs myself.

agreed, just goals gets kinda boring. i like to see the work to get the puck back, the great vision, and the great goals.

Idk where to get full OHL games so I'm just pulling the highlights off the OHL's highlight videos and clipping them and putting them all together for Johnston only...only the notable plays tho and the ones where the quality isn't completely horrible on the video which seems to be the case for some of them

I agree tho with yall just goals gets boring, so I'm looking for the nice assists in particular. For a guy like Johnston especially that's what I wanna see. The vision and playmaking skills. So far through about a quarter of the season its about even tho on goal and assist highlights. The OHL videos are so badly clipped and don't usually contain replays tho so it's a bit messy but I'll do my best

@Kcb12345 can you highlight Johnson on any longer plays so we for sure know which player to watch? Sometimes it's very freaking obvious but others not so much and it's super helpful, especially if the clip has several players on the screen at once.

Thanks.

Anyone here know how to do that? I've never made a highlight video before but didn't even really think if it. Most of the clips it'll be obvious but I definitely know of a few that could use it that I've saved, especially cause some of the clips are short and quick (like 5-8 seconds cause that's all the OHL highlight videos gave them lol)

I'll look into it for sure tho

I've got 65 videos from Johnston's regular season only (the highlight video will just be the regular season for now cause idk where the playoff highlights are but we've seen most of them anyways on here already). Haven't figured out the highlight thing just yet. The video is gonna be a little messy at times cause the OHL highlights were weirdly trimmed sometimes to where I can only show a replay or 2 cause they didnt show the goal live

Trimming the vids and putting them together...might be done tonight but I'll probably upload it tomorrow. Then I wanna do Stankoven

Video will come in around 21 minutes long for Johnston

I could trim it down more, but got a little lazy and didn't trim out some of the celebration time before replays so it's a bit longer but for 65 highlights or so it's not bad

Will look into highlighting him on some plays where it might be difficult to tell its him, but most of them are obvious thankfully and the announcers mention him by name in most if not all of them. Around the 3 minute mark or so the highlights get choppy for his 6-point game only cause the OHL highlight video was very poorly made

It depends on the video software you're using but it doesn't need to be anything fancy. Any time it's not completely obvious, pause the highlight for like 0.5s with a red circle or arrow pointing to the best hockey prospect on the screen.

Apparently Filmora has a built in function that can identify and light up a moving object, but it could be more advanced to use. Seems doable though. I've never personally used Filmora.

Only like 10 games in but Stankoven's highlight reel is gonna be insane and so much fun. Almost everything he does is highlight reel worthy it seems. Nonstop effort and so much skill

Only downside is the horrific camera angles Kamloops uses, but the WHL videos have some great replay angles. Also seeing a lot of Seminoff highlights which is cool

So I've got 56 highlights for Stankoven, 65 for Johnston, all for the regular season.

For the playoffs I now have 20 more for Johnston and 16 more for Stankoven. Found a much quicker way to get the videos that saved a lot of time so I knocked all of those out super quickly. I'll upload the playoff highlights separate

Oh yeah and Seminoff makes an appearance in the Stankoven videos a few times

Will start uploading soon :)

14-15 minute video for Stankoven
21 minutes for Johnston

Gonna upload them both today, then probably their playoff videos tomorrow or later today. Also will probably do Mavrik Bourque too just cause his highlights are insanely satisfying. So many perfect passing plays/great vision by him. Any of our other CHL prospects that yall really wanna see if I do more?

@Kcb12345 Super cool you take time making these!

Stranges seem like an obvious pick if you wanna do another one. There are a few out there already but they're mostly prior to his draft from what I can see.

It's fun! Also yeah Stranges probably too after Bourque if I continue doing them. I also thought guys like Arcuri & Roulette could be interesting to do. Then there's guys like Kyrou now that could be interesting...idk we will see how fast I get tired of doing them but so far I'm not through probably the 2 biggest videos which is good

I don't know if this is a new thing or maybe I didn't pay as much attention to prospects in the past that were not Dallas property, but I keep seeing this more and more. This is at least the third player in the past week that I've seen confirmed while they were playing in the Hlinka Gretzky that they'd start in Europe, but they're prepared to leave for the OHL mid-season if they aren't getting time. Guys just don't seem to have a problem speaking up and putting themselves in a position to succeed. Bichsel did the same thing leaving Switzerland for Sweden, but I'm honestly maybe a bit more impressed with these younger Euros giving the men's league a try, but flat out saying I'm not going to risk my development and heading to a different situation if needed.

I don't think they deserve minutes if they don't earn them, but we all know just like some NHL teams don't play younger guys as much, some Euro teams and leagues fall into the same trap. I think there's a right away and a wrong way to this approach. If you're entitled about it, you're doing it the wrong way. It seems like most of these guys are doing it the right way. Personally, I'd rather see a prospect play semi-regular to regular minutes in a men's league if they're capable of that, but I love that they're aware enough of their development that Euro junior really isn't going to cut it compared to the CHL.

I have no idea if it's common either, but I think your last point is the most important one, outside of maybe Swedish and Finnish juniors, I don't think these kids trust the developmental systems in Europe, and the next best thing is the WHL or OHL. It's a smart move for their careers if they think they have a real shot at making it, but a pretty radical life move for teenagers to be doing that.

I always think about Klinbgerg's failed experiment in Finland. I think he returned home mid-season because he was struggling with being away from home. I don't blame the guy at all, but it did give me a better perspective on the guys that are capable of handling that separation.

Some elite hockey players seem to be built differently and handle this better than I think most people. Faksa always comes to mind too for his fairly insane story about moving away from home at such a young age.
