2022-23 New Goalie Equipment and Masks

Ville Husso's new Detroit mask, nod to Mike Vernon:

It's a bit sad that half of the time something truly striking comes along these days, it's some form of throwback/homage/inspired by design from the past. Speaks volumes about what has happened to style and design. But this mask is beautiful. So i'm going to enjoy the heck out of seeing it.

What i like about this mask, is the way it seems to highlight Dave's lack of attention to design detail and layout. For all of the zillion little "storyteller" detail clutter he crams in there...the layout of the actual design around the vent holes is just really sloppy and disruptive to the actual "design" being attempted there. Goalie masks are one of those things that is a unique canvas - with good design following the curves and contours of the surface in a flattering and organic way, and working around the openings and hardware and practical considerations in a way that minimizes the disruption or even incorporates them as a feature.

Bad design is looking like it was done as a template, then just sprayed onto the mask with no regard for the actual contours and shapes and placement of openings. Like this one. Replete with arbitrarily terminating and discontinuous lines and design elements and frankly kinda weird looking arcs and things to begin with.

This is one of the better done DA masks, not sure what the issue is here. You realize the hole where the strap is going will black the light coming through right?

Though I hate yet another matte finish mask, they just look so blah!

It's one of the less cluttered DaveArt masks, yes. It's one of the less "DaveArt" signatureFX looking masks. But better? Nah. He's had better ones, but this ain't one of them.

I feel like it's an example of where stripping it back to more basic design elements just highlights some of the underlying problem with his masks in general. It's not just that they're cluttered, they're often compositionally flawed in the underpinning designs to begin with.

Like...just look at the stone hammers. He located the X pattern right over a ventilation hole. It looks stupid. Whether light is coming through or not, it's just sloppy. Or look at the arcs. Not only do they not really follow the contour of the mask properly, they also just disappear to an awkward nonexistent unresolved convergence point. It's just compositionally inharmonious with the mask itself. It's bad design. Simply stripping things away doesn't make for a good mask, if the remaining underpinning design elements are poorly composed.

IMO it just shows why DaveArt might actually be even worse than people think.

Spencer Martins new mask is very simple and clean....to the point where I wonder if it's just a fill in while his new one gets finished

As someone who grew up watching Khabubulin on the Oilers, I am very excited about Campbell's new mask. From what little we've seen of it, the number 36 on the chin area in the front is very reminiscent in both font and colour of the Bulin Wall text that was on Khabibulin's masks. Maybe not the most objectively pleasing but definitely what I like haha.

Edit: On second thought, that might not be a 36. Not sure what it is...

I think it might be his initials on the chin

I dont get why everyone cries over Dave art every year. Correct me if I'm wrong but the goalies discuss the design and make their own suggestions right? Dave doesn't just wing it and the goalie deals with what he gets. So really shouldn't you all be mad at the goalies for designing them? Also lots of goalies go to him each year so he must be doing something right.

Feels like this goes back to the whole NHL players don't show personality. The HF pundits want plain boring 'clean' designs like the good old days to go with the robot interviews because heaven forbid personality is expressed.
