2022-23 New Goalie Equipment and Masks

I dont get why everyone cries over Dave art every year. Correct me if I'm wrong but the goalies discuss the design and make their own suggestions right? Dave doesn't just wing it and the goalie deals with what he gets. So really shouldn't you all be mad at the goalies for designing them? Also lots of goalies go to him each year so he must be doing something right.

Feels like this goes back to the whole NHL players don't show personality. The HF pundits want plain boring 'clean' designs like the good old days to go with the robot interviews because heaven forbid personality is expressed.

I'm not sure that's what it is. I think the criticism is more directed towards like his almost-mandatory 100 lens flares per mask. His designs and layouts are generally fine (some better than others as with anything). But his insistence on random gimmicky elements detracts from the overall design far too often.

Great setup from Kuemper

Beautiful setup, from the pads to the mask, and everything in between.

Best thread of the year until it gets derailed by DaveArt defenders.

Here we go.

I kinda love that Georgiev had the outer roll of his leg pads kind of mirrored/carried through on his blocker. Something about that is really aesthetically pleasing to me. It's all just framed in really nicely.

I don't think it's that at all. I think it's actually the opposite. People miss when goalies had their own "signature design" with various takes on "showing their personality" visually via that mask concept.

It used to be that the masks were a stylized, personalized representation of the goalie. Felix "The Cat" Potvin with his cat design, Curtis "CuJo" Joseph with his CuJo design, Eddie "The Eagle" Belfour with his Eagle designs, Khabibulin with his "Bulin Wall" motif in various forms.

Goalie masks and the painting thereof has always kinda been like "show and tell". Which is why it's a lot more impactful and illustrative to just bring one singular item or small coherent collection of thematically related items and really delve into it and what that story is...rather than bringing 58 completely unrelated items and being unable to go into any detail on any of them.

People have a visceral reaction to DaveArt masks because less is more.

It used to be possible to identify a goalie simply from their mask.

Now it isn’t - it’s often a kaleidoscope of glitter and logos and gradients.

sometimes it looks cool, but most of the time it’s a busy mess.
Art can be somewhere from simplistic to complicated. To each their own.

The application and medium matters though.

Like, one of my favourite artists is Hieronymus Bosch. The epitome of a "bazillion things going on at once". It's absolutely fascinating as pure "art" where you can just delve into the depths of the bizarre and take the time to soak in and appreciate the insane level of detail and nuance, finding something new everywhere you look. But i wouldn't want a mask painted like that.

A goalie mask is a completely different sort of canvas. It's a small oddly contoured canvas viewed from a distance and in constant motion.

It's right on that proverbial crossover point of "Art" and "Design"...leaning heavily toward the latter practice. Design can be heavily informed by "artistic elements and principles" but in it's purpose, it's a different field. Design is the part that Dave seems to struggle with. Using artistic elements to clearly convey a cohesive point/message/theme/whatever.

People like masks that are "design" heavy, because they are clear and distinct. The vast majority of Dave masks are minimal to negligible on the actual compositional "design" elements, and when they are there, they're often awkward or disjointed.

It's the same reason people are so visually repulsed by "Jersey Ads". The clutter spoils and confuses the design intent of the uniform as a whole.

I have been saying this for years, and, I kid you not, I have had multiple people try to claim that goalies "don't really care" and they just say "whatever." Another guy tried to claim that goalies *had* to use DaveArt - I'm being serious, that argument was actually presented.

You would only need to spend about ten minutes talking to a professional goaltender to know how specific they are about their gear.

There is also a fundamental misunderstanding that surfaces every year as well. These masks *are not* designed to be seen well on the TV screen or by the fans in the crowd. They are absolutely designed to be a very personal piece of equipment and the design process only ever includes a conversation about how it might look from the stands if a specific goaltender thinks thats a cool part of goalie masks. 99 out of 100, however, think it's cool to have all the (admittedly) cheesy FX work that Dave does and then they want their favorite cartoon included and hey, wouldn't it be cool if my kid's initials were in there and also my Grampa stormed the beach and Normandy... Etc etc. The masks are made for the goalies. That's Dave's client and thats who he is aiming to please.

Whether they are crap or not - I tend to think most of them are crap - he is delivering what he is being asked to deliver and his clients are very happy which is why he gets a ton of work.

Cool, but most NHL goalies *do* want a mask like that.

You hit the nail on the head with this. It's unfortunate that every mask essentially looks the same now.

Less is more, 100% agreed.

Put it another way - picture Ed Belfour, or Curtis Joseph, or Hasek, or Osgood, or Kiprusoff, pick a guy - you know what he looks like.

Doesn’t matter the team, you can see these guys clearly in your mind’s eye because of his mask.

The only iconic mask this generation is Jonathan Quick’s.

Carey Price had 4000 masks. You might remember them from the one game he wore any of them.

It’s a little old man yells at cloud, yes, but I’m still right.

Problem is, we live in an age of younger people having short attention spans and needing constant change.

I have even read comments on here complaining about this goalie or that goalie barely having changed their masks from one season to the next.
