Any news on the status of goalie Tyler Brennen? Played in three games of Prince George's first round series (including 2-1 overtime win) but was not dressed in Game 2 vs Seattle in the second round this weekend.

I believe he is injured. No way he would be dropped the 2 goalie rotation for posting good numbers and wins.

I think this guy is trying to get every ounce of production he can in this 5th season. Then he will test the waters and see if there is a team that will give hm a better chance for a future than he can get in NJ.

He also broke his collarbone in late March, when he was stretchered off the ice.

I don’t know if he had any other injuries in that crash, but that might have played a part in him going back.

His younger brother is an incoming freshman for BU. Maybe it's simply the chance to play with him for a year was more enticing than riding the buses in the AHL.

So he's no longer Devils property eh?

I originally thought that was it too when Moynihan went into the portal (how exactly NCAA prospects’ rights work continue to be a struggle for me lol) but nope.

The relevant passage, which I have never read before, appears to be this one, at 8.6.c.v:

"For purposes of the above provisions, the term "graduation of his college class" shall mean the class with which the Player is scheduled to graduate during his final semester of attendance (as opposed to his matriculating class (the class with which he is expected to graduate as of the date of his original enrollment)). For purposes of clarity, a Player's graduating class may change during his tenure in college."

Because college players are UFA as of August 15 after the graduation of their graduating class, their graduating class just moves up a year and we do this song and dance again. This is good news, though, it means the Devils have a much better chance at retaining both guys.

That's really interesting, I am sure it pertains to a very small group of prospects as most don't go back for a 5th year. I am rather bullish on thinking McCarthy has some promise as a prospect so hopefully he has a good year and wants to sign.

Almost nobody drafted ever does - usually this is only permitted for players who have an injury.

I still think Moynihan is more likely to sign here than McCarthy, as there just aren't likely going to be openings on RHD on the NHL team any time soon, and McCarthy's going to be 23 when he graduates - that's just not a lot of time to establish himself as a pro.

I still wanna sign McCarthy but chances are he turns out to be nothing special. He had a decent college career but nothing crazy. Still hopeful we sign him because you never know what he will amount to.
