Slow news summer. Hopefully one of those games against BU ends up on TV.

Makeup WJC training camp starts on Sunday. Couple of exhibition games August 5/6 with the tournament kicking off on the 9th.

I had absolutely no idea what the first two logos are. Apparently the second one is Lindenwood in Missouri, still have no clue what the first one is.

I had to look it up too, it's the University of Windsor Lancers. Michigan usually opened up the season with an exhibition against a Canadian college in the past.

Probably nothing in terms of New Jersey's future but since the Devils still hold his rights I found it interesting that apparently Niklas Popugaev has un-retired.

Nikita? Read that.
Looking at his numbers his best pro point production was in the ECHL with the Thunder. Russian #s not so good. ECHL is also no indication of how good a player can be if elevated to even the next level (AHL). Bingo #s were very poor. However, those were '18-19 (AHL Binghamton) and '19-20 (Adirondack) stats.

He is 3 years older now and still only 23. If the prospect pool were barren like Vancouver's he might be worth another chance at 6'6"/201, but that's not the case with Jersey's stockpile. Your "nothing in terms of New Jersey's future" would appear to be spot on.

In looking at the potential available NCAA free agents it looks like the Lighting won't be signing Denver captain Cole Guttman next month.

Is he a player worth pursuing and what type of upside does he have?

Guttman was a career .86 PPG and in this past season, his 4th and final year, he put up 45 Pts in 41 GP on a top Divsion I NCAA hockey Team at the University of Denver. Overall those are good NCAA numbers at 1 of the nation's top hockey schools. He will be 23 for the better part of this coming season with an April birthday. The NJ Devils have a serious lack of centers beyond the Devils roster. There will not be a single NJ Devils center prospect on the Utica Comets this season beyond 4th liner, 23-yr-old Aarne Talvitie. He would be worth a flier and could be signed to an AHL contract if need be so as not to disturb NJ's 50 contracts.

This depends upon whether or not other teams are also interested. Some may take a look at his numbers and considering he was a Tampa Bay Draft selection, they just might think he's worth a 1-yr shot in the dark to stuff in the AHL with an option to send him to the ECHL if he doesn't pan out in a short time. Absolutely no reason the Devils couldn't do the same thing. However, if other teams are offering him a 1-yr NHL 2-way, the Devils would have to make a further decision.

In comparison, undrafted NCAA Michigan Tech LW Brian Halonen was signed to a 2 yr, 2-way ELC in March, shortly after his final season ended. He was then signed by the Utica Comets to an ATO and recorded 3 Pts in 12 GP and went pointless in 2 AHL Playoff games. His 2-yr stint with NJ will begin this Fall.

Halonen's career PPG was .76 and his final season point total was 44 in 37 GP. The 2 had similar numbers in their college careers with both guys playing all 4 seasons in school. GUttman was a drafted player while Halonen was not. I see no reason why taking a shot on Guttman would be any more of a risk than they are taking with Halonen.

From the beginning Vilen had a lot of criticism because of his position. Guy still has good tools to play defensive first role. Saw a couple of his games last season, he was good and doesn’t lose his place in the ice. Never know when your D leaders will hurt and you should find competent replacement immediately.
year ago everybody were angry about the pick, but after year we have a lot of LD and rd prospects with different specialtie. That’s great and will only help in the future.

I think last season many of us noticed the lack of right handers in the defensive prospect pool. The criticism of the Vilen pick was probably based on that rather than anything specific to Vilen.

I think some fans translated their disappointment about RD pool right into the player.

that’s good Fitz has priorities with defensemen, he likes tall mobile defensemen who can play good one on one. But the most exiting thing is he drafted Nemec instead Jiricek and Casey instead Salomonsson. Jiricek and Salomonsson both are prototipical Fitz guys but he prefer other players. I like it when we talk about strategy of drafting in the first and second round.

I don’t know will I have an opportunity to watch ncaa games next season. Really interesting for devils fan, a lot of interesting prospects. Leddy is my sleeper. Really like his defensive iq and his defensive tools. Saw a lot of different tricks from him In different situations and now really interesting to watch how he will look against older more expirienced players. I think he have good chances to be that kind of guy after some years we want to see in Marino next season.

Im a big defensive game fan. And it would make me hurt to rank our defensive chart. When I see how Jason rank our prospects I understand he is wrong, but when I start to think how I would rank them, I can’t find clear answer. A lot of different specialties, a lot of guys to be clear from the beginning.

The problem I had with the pick is that Vilén is a little too well-rounded, which might get him a nice little career in Liiga but means he doesn’t do any one thing well enough to make in the NHL.

His lack of offensive production is a problem, but he also lacks the size of the prototypical hard-hitting, shutdown Finnish defenseman.

It’s hard to make it as a defensive defenseman without size. And he really wasn’t quite that when he got drafted, he was more of a two-way dman who gets overwhelmed when trying to do the puck moving part and didn’t produce a lot.

Maybe he has more offense buried in there, not sure what happened this season. Lambert defender’s certainly ripped the Pelican’s offensive schemes.

He’s got time and his contract will slide, he just needs to show some signs of offensive life to raise his stock.

In person he seems pretty beefy, so he is a little different from some of the undersized Finnish defenders taken in the middle rounds. So that helps.

Edit: Actually don’t think he’ll be at the U20, so took that out.

The team must have seen something they like since they signed him to the ELC. If he was the best guy on the list when they picked so be it, but he is buried a ways down the depth chart at LD.
