Great you just jinxed us for next two seasons when PV extends Eakins and the AHL scrubs another few seasons and we are going to embrace the coordinated NHL - AHL suck.

It’s pretty apparent that he’s hasn’t been good at selecting coaches. I’m hoping that the active consultants like Scottie, Getzlaf, and Teemu along with water boy Madden help give the guy some guidance. He really needs it without his mentor Yzerman making the decisions for him.

We better hope that Madden doesn’t resign before our draft…

I'm indifferent if we retain Eakins. Personally, I think Eakins is a placeholder for Verbeek.

Apparently, when Eakins is given a healthy, talented roster, his team can thrive. Look at that positive GD in the first 33 games. It's when injuries/COVID hit the talented players is when you see the play breakdown and we had to rely on three rookie D-men in Drysdale, Benoit, and Mahura. Problem is we lost our GM early in the season and didn't have an acting GM do anything to help improve the roster when it needed help. When Verbeek came, he sat on his hands while Manson missed 12 consecutive games on IR.

Eakins has always been a rebuild coach. Thing about rebuilds is that you're lacking talent and/or talent depth.
The top producers for Eakins this season have been Terry, Z, Rico, Fowler, and McTavish. We got two young guys, two old vets, and a rookie. What they all have in common is they are top talents while the rest of the roster are middling or worse.

PV probably would prefer Matt McIlvane to become his NHL head coach, but he's going to get his start at the AHL level first. McIlvane may need a year or two in the AHL before going to the NHL. In that meanwhile, he gets to grow with so many young prospects. The transition might be smoother that way, which was how Eakins transitioned with the Ducks.

Short update on McIlvane, I'm Austrian and Salzburg is currently facing my team (KAC - Thimo Nickls home team btw) and Salzburt used to be the powerhouse due to Red Bull and significantly more budget. But that is currently not the case anymore, still the with the highest budget but they play a very structured game. I think McIlvane is able to establish something the Ducks lack right now. I just have no clue how this translates to a higher league. Our league is somewhere like Allsvenskan or the Slovak top league. AHL is another dimiension.

The statement in the article could allude to an assistant coaching position in San Diego. Based on your assessment, that might make more sense.

Will be interesting to see for sure. Parts of the reports have him as a bit oldschool, I hope it's not Randy in a trench coat lol. But I welcome this new shift, I hope he is better than that guy we had 2 seasons ago who started trending San Diego in the opposite direction.
Gotta remember that if he's the HC, he will have first hand on a lot of our new guys coming over. Eh... Dineen was really good for us...

Thank you for the update, much appreciated

Here's what DALL-E gives you for Randy Carlyle hiding on someone's shoulders in a trench coat:

If McIlvane is the new HC, then he'll at least have some connection to one of the current assistant coaches in San Diego in Kris Sparre, who was McIlvane's assistant coach for Salzburg between 2019-21. The other assistant coach, Clarke, is also a newbie to the AHL like Sparre, which explains why Sommer was inserted as a stopgap AHL coach for the Gulls.

I'm not sure if McIlvane will be the new HC and just refer to him as another coach added to the Gulls staff since nothing's been made official, but it feels like he's an HC hire.

For insight into McIlvane, here's an in-depth article I shared in the thread before: link. The article is two years old, a Jan 2021 publish date. Seems like an updated version of Eakins on being good with the players as people with better results on ice.

Just wanted to share in case anyone wanted some info on the Ducks organization personnel. They have some intro on Ducks Pro and Amateur scouts. So they do have a Russian scout.

FYI they also have 21-22 media guide as well. Kind of get an idea who left and what they’ve added since Verbeek became GM like sports science, etc.

Why wouldn’t they? Just because they don’t draft in Russia, doesn’t mean they don’t have a Russian scout. I’ve heard about Krylov for quite some time

That comment was just for click bait lol. I for one believed they do. I mean they drafted the players on your username plus Bryzgalov. So for sure they have someone scouting there.

Never cool to see somebody lose their job, although I wouldn't think he's that far off from retirement age.

I'll admit that I haven't listened to many radio broadcasts at all, but when I did hear them, i didn't think Wood, nor Carroll for that matter, were all that good. It seemed like Wood was mostly reading off a stats sheet most of the game. I thought Carroll got overly excited on scoring opportunities, regardless of their quality.

but still a bit hardcore, given i don't think many people listen on the radio and certainly don't care whether the announcers are A1. Like I said, he conceivably would be retiring in a couple years but perhaps they want to spruce up the radio broadcast right now in a way that just isn't a fit with him.

Sad to see him go. Took me a long time to get use to him. It was just weird going from a guy like Brent Severyn to the OC Register reporter with no NHL experience as your radio analyst. Wish him all the best. Now let’s also get a new TV play by play guy.

I think Carroll is solid pbp. Like you said, hate seeing some lose their job, and he legitimately seems to love the Ducks, but I didn’t think he was great at his job. Carroll is easily the stronger of the two imo.

Interestingly, I love that part of Carroll's style. It makes every game feel like a Stanley Cup game lol

That sucks. Wood has great chemistry with Carroll and brought in light-hearted comedy.

I guess going to Duckstream has a wider pool of listeners, that could have been a factor. Man, 14 years of work with one company and you're gone just like that. I hope Wood is able to catch on somewhere.
I never enjoyed Dan's voice but he was knowledgeable and was obviously a fan. He preceded Stephens at the Register, didn't he? 14 years, seeya. Dick move.

Would be great if the Athletic could hire him to write for the Ducks and just move Stephens to the Kings full time

agreed. I'd be down to have a writer who's a fan of the team because he'd bring passion like Derek Lee. But he's definitely not the type who'd sugar-coat everything either.

Who decides on a radio guys contract (or our TV guys, for that matter)... is it the team GM or some other dept with the org?

They might have to sign off on it but I can’t see them spending time overseeing that part of the business. Somebody has to be over all the media with some kind of plan for communicating with the fans.
alex gilchrist, senior director of comms and broadcasting, with bill foltz, the ceo running the entire ocvibe project.
