Trying to post notes and be better about this. Watching Pinelli today. Missed a bit of the game due to work and eating.

His skating has certainly improved from his draft year, although he doesn't seem as quick today as other games I've seen earlier this season. This isn't to say he was slow - just inconsistent at piecing it all together.

He has played in all situations. Powerplay, shorthanded. On the powerplay, he roved quite a bit. He started on the left point like a powerplay quarterback, but then migrated his way to the right faceoff circle like Adrian Kempe.

He assisted on a powerplay goal - unfortunately, my Internet got screwy a few seconds before the goal and the game resumed after they showed the replay. I'm sure it will be on the game highlights.

I think my favorite part of Pinelli's game is his overall sense. Defensively, he reads the pressure well enough to know when to collapse. Offensively, he changes the point of attack. One thing he hasn't been is stationary. Constantly moving.

After 2 periods, he has 2 assists.

Final, Kitchener won 4-1. Pinelli's statline was 0 G, 2 A, Plus-1, 0 SOG, 0 PIM. Another number which really stands out is 4/14 on the Faceoffs. For the season he's at about 49%. Considering he's older and stronger than most of the league, that number's a bit concerning.

I will say some other things which stand out to me that I didn't write before; he doesn't have much deception to his game. One of the things about Kaliyev, for example, is despite the fact he has a deadly shot, players can't anticipate when or what form it comes in. With Pinelli, the way he opens his blade prior to passing, the way he gets ready to try and take a shot, I think experienced players will have an easier time reading him at the NHL level.

Now, what he does execute, he executes with good skill. His pass delivery was on point, and his speed was enough to draw a penalty.

Kitchener is 8th in the conference and 9 points ahead of 9th place.

Some other player performances:
Angus Booth had an assist in a 3-2 win today. Shawinigan hasn't clinched the playoffs yet - they're 20 points behind the fourth team in the conference.

Kasper Simontaival was blanked and is on a 6-game scoreless streak.

Jack Sparkes was scoreless with 2 PIM. He's also on a 6-game scoreless streak.

Erik Portillo had 38 saves on 43 shots in a 6-5 win.

Kenny Connors was held scoreless in UMass's 5-2 win.

Jack Hughes and Ben Meehan faced off between Northeastern and UMass-Lowell. Both were held off the scoresheet.

Jared Wright is currently underway.

Players who were scratched:
Kaleb Lawrence did not play for Owen Sound today. They're currently 6th in the conference and fairly comfortable. They've not clinched, but I don't see them losing out.

Otto Salin has been out since January 20.

Juho Markkanen has not played since February 15.

Braden Doyle hasn't played since February 3.

I was looking at the Regina Pats this morning, just to see if their was a Dany Roussin riding Connors coattails, and I see Tanner Howe, I'm like "you gotta be kidding me" but I see no mention of Gordie, so they must not be related, plus we would've heard of him by now. (2024 eligible)

Portillo’s defense did him no favors last night, Luke Hughes in particular, he might have had his worst game as a Wolverine. Portillo made a couple of nice saves, and also didn’t allow any bad goals, which have plagued him this season. Although much like with Copley vs Winnipeg, if there are 7-8 good scoring chances you have to hope 5 don’t end up in the net, especially vs a team as bad as Wisconsin.

And we all hope the Ducks or Sharks don’t get Bedard, but if they end up with Fantilli it’s not going to be great either. All the talk on the prospects board earlier in the year that he was feasting on bad competition, now has a 13/19/32 line in 19 B10 games as a draft eligible freshman, and this might be the best level the B10 has been at since it was formed. Every team is tough, outside of Wisconsin.

hughes distracted by the prospect of joining the devils, perhaps?

Regardless, I'm eager to see what portillo can do with some time under ranford too. we haven't had such a big goalie come thru.

I just chalk it up to a bad game vs a really bad team. I do think he jumps right in with NJD though.

Agreed on Portillo with Ranford, if he salvaged Jack Campbell from the trash heap, I am curious what he can do with Portillo.

Wait just a so cal fan second Herbert!

Portillo got the W in OT, I thought?

I would like to see Bedard as much as possible, and therefore in Anaheim.

I do not think it will happen, however.

I think backroom deals happen and teams pay for a higher draft pick, every year.

It explains how Edmonton got so many # 1's, only to have karma penalize them .

It will not happen most likely because the Ducks owners are some cheapaz Chazarians.

Michigan won 6-5 in OT vs by far the worst team in the Big 10. It was not one of their better performances all year, sure a W is a W but if Alabama struggles with Vanderbilt it’s not confidence building as you prepare to face better teams.

As discussed before. The NHL draft lottery is run by Ernst & Young, one of the big four accounting firms. They are not going to risk their reputation rigging the NHL draft lottery.

And I don’t know why anyone would want Bedard or Fantilli in the division. Bedard is looking like a McDavid type talent and if Fantilli is Auston Matthews who would want either in Anaheim?

Ok, thanks.
I hope P-Tortilla starts feeling confident and not the pressure of increased attention and expectations.

I respect your generations beliefs.
But after what I have seen the last view years, IMO, everything is rigged these days, they control reputations and smear anyone who does not play along.

I have been watching the Kings since I arrived from Canada in 77 and traded my hockey sticks for surfboards.
I live close to the Ponda Center and usually hit the Kings games.

Bedard will be somewhere on the road to a cup.
Why not get to see him more often?
Beat the best to be the best!

Thanks for the reports!

Watching Clarke and Barrie vs Mississauga today. As I hope to mention things about other prospects, I'll keep it here. The +/- scout can stat watch in the Clarke thread.

So far, it's been a relatively low-energy effort from him so far. Barrie's up 1-0. Clarke was on the ice and got a +1, but did not contribute to the goal. He mostly stationary but the cycling was done down low. He shows his offensive instincts, though, as he did smell blood and start drifting towards the opposition's net prior to the goal.

He was on the ice for a dangerous shot against, prior, though not by fault of his own. His defensive partner backhanded the puck to the slot where it was picked off. Clarke didn't neutralize him; he didn't have body positioning on him. But I'm not quite sure he should have been expected to recover that sort of giveaway.

Clarke later made it 2-0. He started the attack by making a lobbing pass from the defensive zone to the opposition blueline that his teammate was able to recover and gain entry. He joined in on the attack and, as the fourth man in, pounced on a rebound a couple feet away from the goalie and backhanded the puck in.

He wasn't used on the PK in the first period.

No, he wasn't beaver-tailing.

2-1 Barrie after 1.

Trying to just add comments to what's already been written instead of writing a summary of each shift.

Clarke got a penalty after he shoved someone a bit after the whistle - another Steelheads player hit him from behind down to the ice, to which Clarke quickly got up and started mucking it up. Not a tough guy, but nice to see him not back down.

I think there are a couple times he either overestimates his ability or he underestimates his opposition. There are a few times he tries to do soft touches of the puck past a player but the player defends him well.

His offensive instincts are still very strong. He has a great blend of patience with the puck but executes with decisiveness.

Third period - Clarke got the secondary assist on a controversial goal (looked like it was kicked in and shouldn't have counted, but Clarke deserves the point anyways lol).

He also had a gnarly collision that had him in a bit of discomfort. However, he didn't miss any play time. He was out the next shift.

Most remarkable with his offensive ability is his ability to create danger each time he has the puck. The secondary assist on the game winner was a result of him coming down the wing at the right time and firing a low shot towards the goalie's pads that allowed for a rebound. He did not have a good shot, and trying to pass to the slot would allow the goalie to try to make a save... so why not force the goalie to make a save in a way where a rebound was available?

He's a multi-faceted offensive threat with the puck on his stick, particularly in the offensive zone. Defensively, I think he can stand to have more respect for his opposition (not that he did anything unsportsmanlike, just didn't have a sense of urgency with his positioning where he really deemed anyone much of a threat when he was on the ice). But then again, I don't think this is the best league to assess/evaluate his defensive ability.

Final stat line: 1 G, 1 A, +3, 9 SOG, 2 PIM. 3-2 win by Barrie.

Another defensive no-show by Michigan tonight in front of Portillo. Only 1 of the 4 Wisconsin goals tonight would be considered weak but it’s a continued issue for him, just to many shots that have to be saved end up in the net, but there were a couple of nice saves mixed in but he’s not a confident goaltender like he was last year. Michigan is looking like the Oilers right now, going to have to outscore everyone it seems.

Harvard and Cornell going into OT 0-0. There was a game before that went into double OT, so the ice has been rough.

Winner plays Colgate tomorrow. Loser goes home.

Great performance tonight by Portillo. No bad goals, hung out to dry on the goals against, including a 2 on 0. And made some huge saves down the stretch in this one vs a loaded team in a hostile environment.

On to the big tourney

Laf seems like a guy that will fit right into the Kings organizational mindset. While NOT that big, he plays a physical, defensively strong game. He's not racking up empty point against weak lines and PPs. Usually playing against the other teams top lines. All while having a great shot. Oh, and his a RW too. See you soon kid.
