What team is selling a 2C to gain space? Additional to that, would that player cause a longer-term issue?
I have no idea.

Maybe a team with a prospect ready to take that spot.

I haven’t really looked. But if teams really are desperate, maybe there’s a deal to be had. Doesn’t need to be whether the Avs get gifted a good player. But a hockey trade.

Why can't you compare? They are basically the same age. Milano has ~200 games in the NHL and will be with his third org. It isn't like we don't have a good picture of who he is.

Milano has talent, but he's simply a shitty hockey player. Put him in Arizona and he puts up points. Put him on the Avs and he struggles to get in the lineup.

He was talking about Dahlen.

I can give you a spoiler here. Nelson, Hayes, and RyJo are the only guys really out there in a cap dump sort of situation.

At the same time, I’d like to get opinion from people.
Manson was our last bigger signing, at 4.5M. It’s left the Avs with under 4M with a hole at 2C.
I’m curious to know if people would have preferred not signing Manson, and instead signing Kadri at say, 7x6.5.

So option A: sign Kadri for 6.5, and have just under 2M in space to trade for or sign a replacement 4D.

Option B: the current situation of having Manson but just under 4M in space to trade for or sign a replacement 2C.

Part of me would have preferred A, only because it may be easier to trade for a replacement 4D than it is to trade for a replacement 2C. Obviously, my premise about acquiring a D-man may be way off base seeing as how I know nothing about trade costs or players available.

Just curious what people would do with a chance at a do-over.

Easily A. 2Cs are more important than 4Ds.

In 7 years, this core is done for anyway. Most players will be in their mid 30s and even the youngest of the core will all be pushing 30.
Doesn't justify handing out bad contracts. With good management the Avs should still be a solid team, if they suck at that point the GM has made mistakes.

Definitely wouldn't touch that contract. Naz would be 38 in the final season.
The last year definitely wouldnt worry me at all. The avs could structure the deal so that hes paid more money up front, while having a lower salary in his final years. Maybe even include a signing bonus in his final year. This way, a team that wants a higher cap hit but low salary can take him on easily. Id also suspect that in 7 years, we should be closer to 100M cap. I cant see 6.5 being prohibitive.

Still wouldn't do it. 7 years for a 32 year old is always going to be a no for me. 6.5M is a perfectly reasonable cap hit but the term is too much. If Naz wants 7 years he should go somewhere else.

If the Avs are going to go 7 years on Kadri I just wish they had gone 8 to really keep that AAV down. I guess in hindsight Naz wouldn’t have taken it anyway since he though July 13th was his big day of cashing in.

I love the Manson signing. Those are the players that make a team, 2C is huge but that will come too. Manson would’ve been scooped up instantly, he was a game changer in the playoffs.

Perhaps the Avs should explore the other side of the coin. Instead of trying to shed, they should be looking at trying to get a good Kadri replacement by absorbing cap. They still have 3ish million in space to absorb

Not really. Bonus for Newhook and Byram will likely be in the $3M neighborhood. So the Avs start at a $3M cap hit, if you are a responsible GM. If the Avs go right up to the cap, there will be overages which make next year even more painful.

I'm not sure I see a team looking to dump a 2C at $3M in cap space. Or a 3C for that matter.

Much rather see Manson stay with us then go to a team like the oilers.

I like Manson but 2C is way more important than a second pairing dman. If the Avs dont have a legit 2C they arent going to win anything this season. Hell even with a 2C they might not with Georgiev in net.

A couple of weeks ago, I brought this up somewhat in jest, but now I’m starting to wonder.

Would the Avs try and squeeze one final season out of some oldster like Stastny or Krejci?

I'd love Nelson on this team. He's not a 'sexy add' but as #2C he can put up points and play a solid defensive game. We don't really need a guy to put up 70-80 points with this lineup anyways.

His 3 year contract would fit in perfectly with the Avs timeline and could roll off as a UFA at age 33. By that time, one can only hope that we'd have a youngster ready to take over that role.

He's averaged a 59 point pace the past 4 years and @Hasbro would be happy, he's 6'4" !!!!

I'm all for Stastny.

He just scored his first 20+ goal season since leaving Colorado in 2014. He paced for 52 points this season also, but played a lot more Left Wing than usual (but still took 472 faceoffs at a 56.6% clip).
