I would venture to guess the opposite is true. Motte was Ottawa's plan B after they missed out on ERod. We know he left money on the table elsewhere to sign with us.

Motte never made any sense for this team.

It’s funny you say that ha, I was like where were these eagles earlier and then I realized they put them in to just save Frodo and Sam at the end :)

Good point, could be that too.

Motte wouldn't have been ideal but at least it would have given the Avs another proper bottom 6 forward. Maybe he stopped being an option though once Cogliano and Helm got re-signed.

The Avs certainly don't need any more of those. They've got more than enough options for the bottom six. Top six? That's a different issue.

Erod at 2M makes a lot more sense than Motte at 1.4M for us

I do like Motte in Ottawa though, he's a good fit there

If Ottawa's defense comes together and Talbot/Forsberg end up a serviceable, average level of play duo... Ottawa could be sneaky good next year. Pieces are there to have a good team, it just has to all click.

I still maintain there's too many improved teams in the east for them all to be better. If Ottawa makes it, who misses? This is going to be an interesting year for the east, possibly even a transitional year for playoff contenders like when the west saw the Kings, Sharks, et al fall from grace.

Boston and Washington are going to fall off a cliff at any given moment. Can probably throw Pittsburgh in too.

These would be the 3 teams I'd certainly list on the very top. I really don't think any of those teams got better this summer. HM to Toronto who I don't think falls off the cliff this year, but it could really come in any given year as Tavares and their defense enters ages where declines are likely.

That goaltending in Toronto opens the door for anything happening to them honestly. I dont have any trust in our goaltending, but I'd have even less in the Leafs duo if I was a Leafs fan. And they dont have the Defense to be able to mask some major goaltending issues like we do.

Washington is a top candidate to miss next year IMO. They aren't getting any younger. Kuemper should be an upgrade in net, but with his injury history as well if anything happens to him they are toast. Already without Backstrom presumably for the year, Wilson is expected to miss a bunch of time as well I thought, Oshie cant stay healthy. I think they're going to be pretty bad actually.

Boston probably has one more good kick at the can. But they're on the verge of decline as well. And a lot of unknowns around Pastrnak. If he doesn't want to re-sign with them you almost have to tear it down and get something for him this year before losing him as a UFA.

And... Honestly the only non playoff teams in the East that I feel improved enough to be playoff teams next year are Ottawa and maybe one of Columbus or New Jersey but not both. I think Buffalo and Detroit got better, but not playoff contender better yet(Buffalo has a really bright future though). New Jersey has a lot of questions in net still, and Columbus might still be 1-2 more years away from some of the young guys being good enough to get over that hump.

If I had to guess the East playoff teams right now I would say:

Tampa Bay
Carolina
Florida
New York(Rangers)
Toronto
Ottawa
Pittsburgh
Boston

Columbus and New Jersey will be close and one of them gets Bostons spot if they trade Pastrnak.

I doubt the Islanders will miss again...if they do it's a huge failure.

I think the Bruins miss the playoffs and are a year away from a full rebuild. The post-Bergeron era. It's not even sure that Pasta will be part of the new core at this point...

All of a sudden that Hampus Lindholm contract looks weird.

My worry with the Islanders is losing Trotz more than anything else. There will be some players that play better, but that team was nicely built around his coaching style and in the playoffs they could really double down on it. I can easily see them making it, but I could see them being a mess if they want to move away from the Trotz style.

I'm surprised that we don't have a dman on PTO yet (no, not Subban)

I think they plan to use hunt, macdonald, englund and macdermid as the extras but I thought maybe a PTO for competition in camp wouldn’t be a bad thing. Can’t see us spending anymore money though

In my opinion this team is better than the team coming into the 2021-2022 season. You have Manson, Lehkonen, Erod, Meyers coming in and lost Kadri and Bura.

Goalies too. Bura scores the odd clutch goal but was mainly useless luxury we could not afford. Kadri is a massive loss. Also don’t forget Jost the goat.
