The Byram contract is kind of a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation. Byram will demand a big payday and he's well within his rights to do so. His side will point directly to the Dahlin bridge as the target. He'd probably fall under, but high 5s is about as low as it would go. The next deal from there is likely 9-11m. If you go long-term next year... you're kinda forced over 7 and nearing 8 in an offseason with cap issues already, but it saves quite a bit if 4 seasons.
Speaking as a former major fan of the Stazz, I wouldn’t be completely opposed to him returning. But I feel like he’s probably lost a step or two, and it ain’t like he was that fast to begin with. Really odd looking at his past seasons. He found his offensive game again in Winnipeg at the cost of defense, but his short stint in Vegas was just flat out bad judging by the underlying numbers.
Rodrigues wouldn’t be a terrible fallback plan. Right-handed center with a heavy shot who could slot in at wing or center, seems defensively responsible and drives play well. I just wonder how well he’d be able to handle 2C duties full time.
He's slow. He will look like he's skating at half speed compared to the rest of the team. Plus he's very injury prone and there's a 50/50 chance he'll even be in the lineup by the time playoffs roll around.
There is no rush to get a 2C. The Avs roster is perfectly fine for opening night. Sakic and CMac can spend a couple months looking into the options they have.
Signing Stastny is a desperate and low-IQ move IMO. They won't do it.
Look, I’m no longer burning the candle for Mr. Trucker Convoy Donor, but Stastny has never looked out of place in an up-tempo offensive scheme despite his obvious lack of speed. If anything he’s fantastic on the rush and thrives in such systems. I don’t know exactly how much is left in the tank but I don’t think he wouldn’t fit in Bednar’s system.
Yep. Timing matches perfectly with Mansons contract expiring, so then if Bo really does become a top pairing sort, Mansons deal should cover his ~4.5M raise up to ~9.5M.
I’m starting to think that the chance Newhook is brought back next year is slim to none. If he explodes, we won’t be able to afford him. If he has another 30-40 pt season, it’ll probably be cheaper to replace him via UFA due to the cap barely moving again. I imagine next off-season will be similar to this one, and I’m not certain Newhook will be worth the 2.5 mil+ if the Avs are making the most of this window.
Late to the party, but I really think Newhook would be our main piece at trying to get Patrick Kane retained at some point this season. And depending on how he's playing, I could talk myself into being very okay with it.
He let the Avs think he would stay, and left as a UFA thus without compensation. I remember the Avs kinda felt off guard as he signed with the Blues for less than what the Avs offered.
In the end, I found the Avs a little naive, it was written on the wall he would sign for Saint Louis
The more we wait, the more unlikely is for Naz to come back. What are the Avs waiting for if Kadri is going to the Isles?
Maybe for them to have leverage with their RFAs and then trade to us a center (Nelson) to make space enough.
I am not sure though if an offer of Compher+Ranta+1st gets it done
Well dahhh, who else? There is no way MacK can be our next C because of his temper tantrum history. Byram would make a perfect C for us. He can lead us by an example.

Missed a lot so will just drop some random thoughts on some of the discussions over the last few pages....
1. Stastny, I've always liked the dude (what I saw of him) and he seemed a real agreeable and well-liked locker room presence. On a cheap deal as depth for LW and occasional draws sure. What disappoints me though is where his defensive game is at now. It appears to have fallen considerable from what I remember when watching him. His skating was never excellent or even great, but his IQ allowed him to be in position a lot.
Did Drury switch to LW that season with Yelle centering him and Hejduk, or am I confusing my memory of NHL99 with real life? I think I had Messier and Podein as pretty much staples on the third in my memory.
Yeah, the brown bottle flu. f***ing infuriated me at the time. Of course, I've since (and was probably starting) had my own battle with the beast and have developed a more realistic understanding of what he was going through. Especially with regards to why he was drinking. f***ing tragic story but ultimately he appears to be in a good place now and I'm happy for that.
Yeah, they were ooof players, but every team had 'em in the mid 90s. If anything, I'd say it was redundant to have both Odgers and Hunter. Messier, I actually thought of and remember as an actual 4th liner/3rd NHL player. Nothing necessarily stand out about him in either role, but he was serviceable...the fact that he could and would swap (sometimes in game) seamlessly made him somewhat of a unicorn, which is why I loved him and really appreciate MacDermid for more than just face punching. He's the perfect scratch because he can immediately go in next game regardless of who is injured bump everyone up and then worry about logistics of getting the call ups in place if necessary.
I think and really hope that Meyers surprises people. I hope fans are sleeping on him this summer so to speak. I think he could be a good 3 C. What I like about Stastny is he strengthens the LW depth. He's the guy that keeps Cogs on the 4th and allows Lehks to be a top six player without crippling the 3rd line's offense. When injuries strike, he CAN and, with our depth probably, should then move to center while we weather the storm. Also, above all, I like a good locker room and if I remember correctly, he was really popular and to the best of my knowledge was very friendly with EJ, Gabe and others after he left. Not sure if they grew apart in the years since or not but I'm sure he would probably fit right back in.
This won't be popular, but you find a player like this to fill this spot and it makes Newhook as the main piece in Patrick Kane at 50% real f***ing tantalizing. We do it as our put us over the top move for the season. The Blackhawks do it because they get a young piece (1 year left on ELC) that has won a Stanley Cup and will be an immediate part of their new core 1.0 as the begin the rebuild. Newhooks path to the top six given we extended Lehks, Nuke, Gabe and Rants isn't going anywhere was as center and I just don't see that 2nd line level of him in that role. As a winger sure, but who'd he be replacing? That's why if we can get a relatively cheap one or two years out of a guy that Stastny that still has a bit of gas left and can fill the role being asked of him I'm all for it.
Coming from a guy who's been on the Staz train for years, no thanks. I think that ship has sailed and he doesn't fit the style of Bednar at all.
Also lol on people wanting Toews @50% all of a sudden. I was roasted for suggesting it a few months ago. This was before Chicago went all kamikaze though. I think it makes sense it's at the deadline at this point. I'm wondering how he would fit in the locker room, but I think he'd be rejuvenated, and shouldn't cost too much. I still think we have a shot at one of the big fish out there though
