Makar and Kaner spending some time together at Biosteel. Saw a vid of Cale finding an open Kaner in his office on the ice too. Make it happen

Never happy.

Dallas' decision to drop $4.5m on Marchment and $3.65m on Suter isn't looking so wise right about now with Oettinger and Robertson needing to get contracts.
Would be funny if Khudobin and his 3.3M contract was cleared to play and further complicated their shit.

One food for thought item when it comes to face-offs - Rantanen was much better with consistent work.

In the games where he took 7+ face-offs (24GP), he operated at 51.6% on 250 draws.

In the games where he took between 1-6 face-offs (34GP), he was much worse: 33.6% on 104 draws.

I’ve posted it before, but I traced back 15 games last year where Rantanen was a full-time center due to injuries to one of Kadri or MacKinnon. In those games, the Avalanche went 12-1-2, Rantanen scored 24 points, and won 51.1% of his draws. (Note: these were games mostly in November and December, with a handful in Late January-Early February. Rantanen did NOT play center at the end of the season when Kadri went down; but he took many more face-offs for the MacKinnon line due to Landeskog also being injured).
Mikko's lower number at faceoffs is most likely explained by coming in to replace whoever was at C and got thrown out of the dot. You can't cheat as much as the 2nd C so you don't risk to be thrown out as well which would give him a penalty.

Mikko at C also helps to re-balance the cap structure in the lineup. It is also much easier to find a top-6 W at the TDL (Kane?) than a 2C.

With that said I still want the Avs to give Newy a very good shot at 2C to finally put to bed the C vs W debates.

Landeskog- Mackinnon- Nichushkin
Lehkonen- Rantanen- Newhook
??- Compher- O'Connor
Cogliano- Meyers- Helm

In this scenario with Rantanen at center we are basically looking for a 3rd line winger instead of a 2nd line center. Rantanen can take pressure off Newhook as well.

Nuance just seems to go right out the window when evaluating players around here. Express concern about a player's ceiling and right away there's people saying YOU'VE GIVEN UP ON THEM.

If we break out the term "BUST" then yes, we've given up. Until then, chill out people.

I think maybe it was the handful of proposals involving Newhook or the doom and gloom approach to having him be an option for 2C. Hopefully he’s been working on his faceoffs this summer but otherwise I think he’s going to have a big year.

Including a player in a trade doesn’t mean you’ve given up on them at all? If you could trade Newhook to get a 2C right now you do it because we’re right in the middle of our contention window. We don’t have time to let Newhook go through his growing pains. Us moving Helleson and Barron didn’t mean we gave up on them.

I honestly don't understand the people that are giving up on Newhook already. I think he's going to surprise a lot of people this year.

LineFrequency
Newhook - Compher - O'Connor
Newhook - Sturm - Aube-Kubel
Newhook - Compher - Aube-Kubel
Newhook - Kadri - Burakovsky
Newhook - Jost - Aube-Kubel

Newhook is a good player already. His 33 points basically replaced Donskoi last year, but did it with less ice time (13:34) and non-premium line mates.

I'm not sure if he's a center though, I guess that remains to be seen. He didn't look like it in his rookie year, but sometimes these young players flip a switch.

It's called focus, on going B2B baby :sarcasm:

He's going to explode offensively with guys like Landy / Lehk and Nuke or Rants around him, getting fed pucks from Makar, Toews, Girard, Byram & others. May be criticism now by some posters, but I bet by mid season it'll be we should have extended him for 6 years BEFORE this (because he's way more expensive now).

I'm predicting a 68-78 point season.

I’ve given up on Newhook purely because he wears #18. I know better than to get attached.

Thoughts on signing Sam Gagner at league minimum for one year as a stopgap RW?

He'd definitely add some playmaking to an otherwise offensively-limited 3rd line, along with another RHS which would be a need for the PP and also at 3RW whenever Compher centers the 2nd line.

Landeskog -- MacKinnon -- Nichushkin
Lehkonen ------ Compher ---- Rantanen
Newhook ------- Meyers ------- Gagner
Cogliano ---------- Helm -------- O'Connor

Alternatively if Rantanen plays at 2C that would give you a RHS winger for his line who is capable of playmaking and keeping up offensively for the most part.

Landeskog - MacKinnon - Nichushkin
Lehkonen ----- Rantanen -- Gagner
Newhook ------- Meyers ---- Compher
Cogliano --------- Helm ------- O'Connor

Not sure if he has good enough skating at age 33, but maybe worth a look perhaps on a PTO.

At some point, the Avs have to develop non-1st round draft picks into NHL players. I get that they're in their window and all, but they can't fill 100% of an entire roster with top 10 picks and veteran free agents.

He’s a good guy that knows a role he can play… but he should be more of a 4th line power play specialist and that isn’t really what the Avs need.
