At some point, the Avs have to develop non-1st round draft picks into NHL players. I get that they're in their window and all, but they can't fill 100% of an entire roster with top 10 picks and veteran free agents.

Gagner is at least NHL calibre, which is doubtful for the prospects you're implying should be given opportunities.

He’s a good guy that knows a role he can play… but he should be more of a 4th line power play specialist and that isn’t really what the Avs need.
As things stand the Avs are looking at having O'Connor at 3RW and possibly higher with a couple of injuries.

Maybe Gagner isn't what the Avs need, but he'd be better than no one seeing how there's a gaping hole in the middle 6.

Right now the Avs are missing secondary scoring IMO. The losses of Kadri and Bura havent been replaced.

That's why an unidimensional player like Gagner for cheap would make sense. We don't need a 2-way or physical guy, we need someone who can help putting the puck in the net. Also someone on PP2 to replace Bura.

I like the Gagner idea. Another interesting PTO option to me is Evgeny Svechnikov.

He'd add some young size and physicality to the bottom-6. I don't know if there is any untapped offensive potential, but he should be good for 10 goals.

Hell of a difference between not replacing 40 Point Donskoi and Saad, and 85 point 2C Kadri
You are implying that an 85 point 2C is a necessity for the Avs. It isn't, and such a replacement is impossible to facilitate.

What isn't impossible, is replacing the production of Kadri and Burakovsky via internal growth of Newhook, Nuke, and a full season of Lehkonen. It's highly optimistic, but such is life in the NHL salary cap world. Kadri had a career year and played like a top-10 C in the league. That's hard to replicate.

Would cost way more than what I'm comfortable paying. While this upcoming season is the best chance of us getting another cup with this core, can't go too much all in and give up the farm for just a rental. If this was the mentality, we would've re-signed Kadri for the deal he got in Calgary.

Forget replacing Kadri it's not going to happen, we need to replace some of the secondary scoring though. Bura + Kadri is a huge loss. Considering that Nuke had a career year and could regress offensively too, that's not inspiring confidence.

Sure, but you can't prepare for everything unlike the big clubs in European soccer that could field two teams and still spank the bottom half of the league table with their reserves. Maybe Nuke regresses. Maybe Makar and MacKinnon both go down. Maybe Newhook steps up and scores 70 points? Maybe Byram breaks out offensively?

I think overall, we are pretty well off. On paper, we are absolutely missing a middle-6 forward. However, that's not something that NEEDS to be addressed before the start of the season. The team on opening day is not the same we are going to the playoffs with.

The scoring of Saad and Donskoi was never replaced either.
Big difference between those two and a 60 point guy in Bura and an 70-85 point guy in Kadri. Huge. At this moment you are relying on Newhook and Lehkonen to carry that load. Also, relying on Nuke to continue giving you offense. If any one of those three fail to pick up the slack you better hope Bo and Girard can fill in the gap.

Byram is going to have to get those points at ES then because I dont think they are playing him on the PP which will hurt his offense.

Lehkonen doesnt have nearly the finnish that Bura has but I will take less finish if it means less stupidity with the puck.
I would imagine Lehkonen will get much more chances to score than Bura did because of his style, going to the net etc. He might have a poorer finish but it might even out in the end still.
