He also had a great playoff series away from Crosby and put up exceptional underlyings until Malkin came back and sapped his minutes. Not only that, but he actually exploded offensively while both Malkin and Crosby were out of the lineup, so to say he only leeched off of Crosby is a bit disingenuous. And while he may have produced on the power play, that's more due to the fact that he had an absurd, unsustainable 4.9 shooting% at 5v5. He's also a very good transition player and had some of the best entry micros of any player in the league, which would obviously fit the Avs like a glove.

But look, I'm not pounding the door down for either guy. I'd be fine with giving Rodrigues $1mill like the Pens did to help insulte the top-6. I'm just not sure why there's this sudden interest in a guy like Toews who just put up 37 points while producing replacement-level results defensively. You run every internal option before settling on a guy like that.

I’m not huge on Toews either but if he was dirt cheap I’d absolutely give it a shot. Last years Chicago team was a disaster, the year before last he put up 60 and the year before that 35 goals and 80 points and always plays well in the playoffs, granted he hasn’t been there in awhile. It’d have to be cheap and he’d have be fully retained though.

Toews can play center. Actually got better through the year than he started. Has a pedigree of performance where you can reasonably expect middle 6 center performance as a base with 2nd line center as a ceiling.
The only question mark IMO is how his skating would fare with the Avs style.

He missed an entire year after that 60-point season due to a chronic illness then put up 37 points. His defensive metrics have also fallen off a cliff since well before that. The only reason people are fawning over him is because of the player they remember him being, not the one he is today.

His defensive numbers are actually noticeably better last season than two seasons ago.

I making a joke about a specific team that was called east coast, even though they aren't east coast... just in the eastern half NA.

So was it Buffalo then? :)

Thing is , what teams would want to retain before we get him hypothetically? Arizona and Chicago? If the asset cost is low then it’s worth a gamble but probably not what Chicago would want (thinking Kaut and something similar that’s it )

Kaut doesn't have much value. His waiver exemption is over so he'll need to pass through waivers when he next gets sent down to the AHL.

He's been bad defensively for a lot longer than people think.

I’m not saying he’s elite defensively still, but he had pretty solid defensive metrics on a horrific Hawks team.

So is his one bad season an outlier? I’m not saying trade for Toews today lol if he’s having a good season then he’d be a great TDL move. Proven winners aren’t easy to come by, he’s certainly a better option than Evan rodrigues lol

How would he "certainly" be a better option?

Is he? I mean he’s got an elite shot, but that’s a massive risk for a guy who’s previous best was 14pts.
....in only 38 games in a bottom 6 role

6'7 center scoring 38 goals in 78 games last year. Sure there's some risk but the potential reward is worth it. He's now signed for his entire prime.

Also he's a former 1st rd pick, not like he comes out of nowhere. Avs passed on him to draft Jost BTW.

So if Buffalo signed Tage for that, I'm assuming he and Mittelstadt are their top two centers?

Are either Krebs and Cozens still decent C prospects or have they switched to winger and/or cooled off as. Just wondering if there is anything there worth talking to them about. I'm pretty sure we don't want to discuss Girgensons.

How can Toews be cheap if he has to be doubly-retained? Teams will want a princely return on that dead cap hit.

There are options beyond Toews vs Rodrigues.
