Not a fan of Dobson but whatever, but I do kinda like Romanov.

Still, that team just looks kinda mediocre. Playoff-worthy, sure, but unless Sorokin goes full Carey Price (without the injuries) I don't see that team as a legit contender. Certainly not in the East.

Could they please get the MacK deal done so we know where we stand with the cap going forward?

I really did not think it would take this long. MacK must be going for the jugular.
Not expecting this to be done anytime soon. I feel like this is going to be clench the butthole up to in the last second before he can to UFA type situation.

Clearly they aren't close or it would have been done by now.

I felt 100% about it, but now maybe at best 50/50. Not sure if he'll be back or not. Not sure why we're messing around with it. You don't let players like 29 go. But we seem to be ok letting this linger.

They have until July 1st of next year to get a deal done. It literally took until the day before free agency to get Landeskog locked down, during which time the Seattle Kraken could've selected him in the draft. You really honestly thought it would've gotten done by now? This is nothing.

I won't be concerned until next offseason if there is still no deal in place, and even then there's plenty of time.

I don't think anyone here is worried that we're running out of time. Some of us would have liked it if it would have been an easy negotiation for once. Like Mack asks for a "reasonable" big contract, the team acknowledges that it's reasonable and they get it done. Those things exist.

It doesn't have to be like Rants and Landy (especially since both guys signed at full value at the end).

This.

How do we know it hasn’t been easy negotiations? It’s summer, they said they knew the ballpark and I don’t think it’s some rush. Contracts are a lot more than AAV and length, I’m sure they’ll have it done before the season starts and if they don’t they have another year until it becomes anything like rant or landy.

Those Islanders contracts are pretty good value. Could bite them in the ass if Dobson becomes really good, but the bridge deals really knocked down the AAV’s.

So if it's debatable then the rosters are close in quality.

Not necessarily. I was attempting to spin it in a way that wasn't condescending or degrading.

Quite frankly I think we are significantly worse this year to start the year compared to where we were last year. Without a 2C that is a massive hole. For my money that is the 3rd most important position in all of hockey behind a 1C and a 1D, and we simply have nobody for that spot right now.

And, more intelligent people then all of us on here see it the same way: Which NHL teams improved the most this summer? Ranking the work of all 32 GMs

Now that Kadri is gone from this team, we're officially at -5.7 wins of expected value from last season to this year. 32nd place in the league by almost a full win. Now that's from the end of the season not the start of the season, so you factor in Lehky and Manson a little into that equation, but even those guys are only going to bring us down to about -4.5 Wins. Still a major step back.

That being said, it really isn't all negative either. I also think that's pretty much our only hole on the roster(Goaltending TBD). So if the Avs are aggressive again this deadline or during the season and we do actually have our 2023 1st this time around, if they go aggressively after someone like JT Miller or even PLD around the trade deadline, then I think this lineup will be as good, maybe better depending on the progression of Newhook and how Meyers looks as a rookie.

For once? There have been easy negotiations before. I don’t think Duchene could have signed his two deals any faster. MacKinnon the last time around was pretty damned easy too.

All due respect if people were expecting or even anticipating an “easy” negotiation then they were being hopelessly naive. Dude’s been playing at an insane discount where he’s been one of the ten best players in the league. And now he’s won the Cup. I know he made mention in an old interview about “taking less” again but I didn’t believe him for a second. He should absolutely take this opportunity to cash the hell in.

We’ll see what happens but I ain’t holding my breath.

So…die hard for Bedard?

Wasn't a discount when he signed it.
Yeah, it was a normal "bank on progression" type of deal where the player is overpaid at the start and underpaid at the end with a diagonal line downward with the middle of the deal being bang on value.

However with Mack it started correctly as overpaid, but he basically became underpaid at the latest on his 3rd year of the deal, if not already on the 2nd year.
We really could not foresee that type of explosion after what had been quite meh two previous seasons (his last two on the ELC).

I am not gonna be mad at the guy if he wants the bank+, but I still hope the deal will stay at most in the 11s.

However, we are in a bit of a screwed if we do, screwed if we dont situation anyway with him.
As
1. If we keep him we keep one of the best players, have one more year of a great deal with a great team to win back-to-back, but after that we have a huge caphit for a player (12M+), who in all honesty, will only stay as good as this and then get worse from here on out during the deal.
2. If we trade him, we get a whole lot of futures + a great roster player, but not in any shape or form a game-breaker. And any picks/prospects will not become gamebreakers unless we get really lucky down the line. Also with that we are missing on Mac for next season which very well can be the diff between the cup and a 2nd round exit.

From a value point of view we should trade him now and maximise the return for the upcoming years, but there is no way we can do that and still consider ourselves to be all out next year again.

I have been going back and forth between this, but I mean we have to have the guy for next season. Even if it would mean we lose him for nothing. A great chance for another cup makes it worth it.

Two things;

1- Mackinnon isn't going anywhere.

2- We are not trading him.

Man idk. Having Manson/Lehkonon/Cogliano from the very start is going to be great for the depth, but no true 2C is a big big hole that they still have no answer for.

IMO they're not as strong out of the gate, as constructed right now, as they were last year. I really hope the plan isn't to play Mikko at 2C. That dude is not a center.
The current roster is arguably better than the opening night roster from last year which had a massive hole at 2RHD, Byram and EJ as doubts, and awful bottom 6 depth.

2C is a hell of a bigger hole than 2RHD, IMO. Not even close to comparable, especially when they had Girard on that pairing already and were just hoping EJ/Byram would work as his partner.

I didn't hate the forward depth to start last year, but yeah it's improved greatly. But I'd trade it back for a proper 2C in a heartbeat.

I have to wonder if Newhook will be given every opportunity to win the 2C spot. Sakic has mentioned he envisions Lehkonen playing with Newhook. And if we slide Rantanen down to the 2nd line he can basically carry that line himself.

The more I think of it, the more I think we will be ok.

Landeskog- Mackinnon- Nichushkin
Lehkonen- Newhook- Rantanen
Comper- Meyers- O'Connor
Cogliano- Helm- MacDermid

If anything, we could add a solid 3rd liner for much cheaper and push O'Connor down.

Sakics MO is to target a RFA so he can get someone with term.

LW- Maxime Comtois- ANA
RW- Alexandre Textier- CLB
C- Brett Howden- VEG

Just a few guys I thought would be a fit for the 3rd line.

I highly doubt that we are trading him, just theorized.
And he might be going somewhere else after next season (i.e. not re-signing). But not before that.
