We had Manson who is likely gone. If we trade G for a 2C (unlikely we even get a 2C for G) then we are searching for a top 4 Dman too
You can get by in the regular season with Makar/Toews/Byram/EJ/JMFJ/random UFA signing and then bring in that RHD at the deadline.

Right now the forward corps is more pressing. A real chance Kadri, Nichushkin, Burakovsky, Helm, Cogliano, and Aube-Kubel are all allowed to walk.

Friedman:

Kuemper: There's a decent chance he signs in Colorado
Nuke: The Avs are working and trying to get him done
EJ: EJ is not retiring (sounds like speculation, but very confident speculation)

Fluery: Colorado could be a possibility if Kuemper walks. Other teams are MIN, PIT, TOR

Please for the love of God do not mortgage this team's future on Darcy Kuemper.

Nuke isn't walking, Lehks is replacing Bura and the other 3 are easy to re-sign or replace.

The only real concern is 2C.

Well, this Kuemper news sucks. I thought we were done with him.
Wait are you talking about the breaking news that "there is a decent chance that Kuemper is re-signed" ??

Wait, I can do it too -> I'd say that the odds that Kuemper re-signs are 50-50.

I would know too from having talked to absolutely no one.

I think Joe will bite the bullet and sign Kadri if Nuke walks.

So what are the backup plans? I doubt Sakic makes a trade. He needs to keep G around to replace Manson. And I doubt Sakic spends big in free agency.

Kadri and Burakovsky are gone. That's alot of scoring to replace. Maybe we add a 2C to replace some of Kadri's scoring and Newhook could potentially replace Burakovsky's scoring. But those are two big "maybes"

Manson is gone. He's a solid top 4 Dman. But our top 4 is still the best in the league. We need to add a sold vet to compete with JJ or be thr 7th guy.

I think Nichushkin and Kuemper will be back. Cogs and Helm for the 4th line if they accept 1 year deals? Do we tender Aube - Kubel? JJ back on a 1 year deal?

Lehkonen 5 x 4.25m
Kuemper 5 x 5
Nichushkin 6 x 5.5m
Aube Kubel 1 x 1.25
Helm 1 x 1
Cogliano 1 x 1
Johnson 1 x 1

That leaves us with roughly 5.8m if we want to use that to sign a 2C and vet 7th D.

Next year we will have 9.5m coming off the books from EJ and Compher to pay for Mackinnon and Byrams new deals. We are still in good shape. But we need to find a cost controlled 2C for under 4m. Easier said that done.and that is if Nuke, Lehkonen and Kuemper sign for those amounts.

Landeskog - Mackinnon - Nichushkin
Lehkonen - Compher- Rantanen
Newhook - Meyers - O'Connor
Cogliano - Sedlak - Helm
MacDermid - Aube Kubel

Byram - Makar
Toews - Girard
JJ - EJ

Kuemper
Frankie

That's still a damn solid group.
Almost exactly what I've been thinking. And don't forget we can make a move or two at trade deadline to bolster/plug a hole
