I think this idea is very possible. The buyout is always an option. Give him an extra year or two, lower his AAV into to low $5s or upper $4s. The cap will go up in the next couple years, and if he falters you can always trade him or buy him out. There's always someone willing to take on a bad contract for picks.I’d give Kuemper term if I could bring AAV into the low 5s/high 4s. He could become be a serviceable back up later on.
And if this is the case, having DK still here, making more as a backup, isn't a horrible thing either. They seem to really believe in Annunen and it's going to be his turn in 2-3 years.
I see the appeal of keeping Kuemper. Sakic paid a lot for him and he had a great regular season.
To illustrate that, from November onward Kuemper was third in Wins (33) - behind Saros and Vasilevskiy (35) - and 2nd in SV% (0.924), behind only Shesterkin (0.933).
But, he stunk in April and that carried over into the playoffs. The eye injury obviously didn't help.
If Detroit can win 2 cups with Osgood as their starter, and play at a high level in numerous other years with him, if Chicago can win 3 cups with Niemi and Crawford, if Pittsburgh can win 2 cups with Matt Murray... just saying, Avs can continue to win with Kuemper. The other options available aren't all that much better, or will cost a ton to aquire. The Avs need a goalie, there is no question about that. However spending $5.5m or more on a goalie with an injury history, who played poor in playoffs and is likely going to be the goalie for the rest of the Avs window is a very difficult situation to be in. The Avs proved that they can win with a backup in playoffs and as Friedman stated there are a lot of goalies who would be excited to come to Denver to have a shot at winning.
Yea he said a few times that Giroux wouldn't come here.Listening to Friedman, really sounds like Colorado is not a place Giroux would go.
The Avs won the cup. Prices paid over the last 12 months are now irrelevant.
I mean... it is a money printing machine right now.A little later Friedman also did go on to say if Kuemper re-signs in Colorado there will be some disappointed goalies because they want a chance to play in Colorado.
If I was a mediocre goalie, I'd love to do jack shit behind a team that always has the puck, too.A little later Friedman also did go on to say if Kuemper re-signs in Colorado there will be some disappointed goalies because they want a chance to play in Colorado.
That’s fine. His loss really.Listening to Friedman, really sounds like Colorado is not a place Giroux would go.
I don't see why Kuemper would sign at an extreme discount though. Especially not as a 32 yo UFA who just won a cup.I mean... it is a money printing machine right now.
If Kuemper is re-signed, I'd hope it is at an extreme discount. Paying the starter's going rate for Kuemper seems like a bad idea.
More reason to not sign him.I don't see why Kuemper would sign at an extreme discount though. Especially not as a 32 yo UFA who just won a cup.
I don't either... but I'm not a part of the negotiations.I don't see why Kuemper would sign at an extreme discount though. Especially not as a 32 yo UFA who just won a cup.
It’s always about the balance between winning and getting paid.I don't see why Kuemper would sign at an extreme discount though. Especially not as a 32 yo UFA who just won a cup.

This may sound crazy, but perhaps Sakic is giving him a ridiculous 8 year offer or something to lower the aav and extend the window. He’s old and sucked in the playoffs so I certainly wouldn’t offer it to him but let’s say Sakic offers him an 8 year, 3.85AAV contract with bonuses mostly paid in the first few years, doesn’t Kuemper absolutely take that? Thats 31M guaranteed. That’s more money than a 5 year x 6M contract which some other team might offer.I don't see why Kuemper would sign at an extreme discount though.
