With the season Naz had I think we all knew he was gonna most likely cash in. I think the only way he took a pay cut to stay was if we didn’t win the cup.

I’m ok with them bringing back Kuemper. I think he has more to offer this team and it doesn’t seem like there are many other options out there. Would like to keep the AAV as low as we can, though. The 6.5 number I saw someone throw out earlier seems too high, but we do need a goalie.

If they re-sign Val and Darcy, then maybe look to trade for a 2C replacement later on in the season I’ll be happy.

I’d give Kuemper term if I could bring AAV into the low 5s/high 4s. He could become be a serviceable back up later on.
I think this idea is very possible. The buyout is always an option. Give him an extra year or two, lower his AAV into to low $5s or upper $4s. The cap will go up in the next couple years, and if he falters you can always trade him or buy him out. There's always someone willing to take on a bad contract for picks.

IMO, keeping his cap hit low is more beneficial now than worrying about his play in 4 years when this cup window might be closed anyways.

They seem to really believe in Annunen and it's going to be his turn in 2-3 years.
And if this is the case, having DK still here, making more as a backup, isn't a horrible thing either.

The Avs need a goalie, there is no question about that. However spending $5.5m or more on a goalie with an injury history, who played poor in playoffs and is likely going to be the goalie for the rest of the Avs window is a very difficult situation to be in. The Avs proved that they can win with a backup in playoffs and as Friedman stated there are a lot of goalies who would be excited to come to Denver to have a shot at winning.

I see the appeal of keeping Kuemper. Sakic paid a lot for him and he had a great regular season.

To illustrate that, from November onward Kuemper was third in Wins (33) - behind Saros and Vasilevskiy (35) - and 2nd in SV% (0.924), behind only Shesterkin (0.933).

But, he stunk in April and that carried over into the playoffs. The eye injury obviously didn't help.

The Avs won the cup. Prices paid over the last 12 months are now irrelevant.

Kuemper, like Kadri, is staring down his last big payday and for any criticism I might have had in the playoffs he did have a solid regular season and like any UFA I wish him best of luck in getting the max he can for himself and family. If he goes I am confident the Avs will either look to Husso on a longer term or see if they can lure Fluery on a 1 year. And I never want to take Frankie for granted. When healthy he is a backup that has shown he can carry the ball for extended periods.

If Detroit can win 2 cups with Osgood as their starter, and play at a high level in numerous other years with him, if Chicago can win 3 cups with Niemi and Crawford, if Pittsburgh can win 2 cups with Matt Murray... just saying, Avs can continue to win with Kuemper. The other options available aren't all that much better, or will cost a ton to aquire.

Grubauer could have been a Stanley Cup Champion but decided to go lose in Seattle for 6 years. Hope that extra cash is worth it.

HAHAAHAHAHAHAAHA loser

Honestly, I think we dodged a bullet with that contract. I don't think he would have been able to get it done.

Husso makes the most sense from an age perspective and how much he would likely want. With Parkilla I am confident in whomever they bring in.

A little later Friedman also did go on to say if Kuemper re-signs in Colorado there will be some disappointed goalies because they want a chance to play in Colorado.
I mean... it is a money printing machine right now.

If Kuemper is re-signed, I'd hope it is at an extreme discount. Paying the starter's going rate for Kuemper seems like a bad idea.

I don't see why Kuemper would sign at an extreme discount though. Especially not as a 32 yo UFA who just won a cup.

It’s always about the balance between winning and getting paid.
It’s almost impossible to know how each player teeters one way or another.
Grubauer clearly went as close to money as he could.
Now the Avs have won a cup. The desperation is no longer what it once was. Kuemper has to decide whether or not he wants to stay at the Avs terms or not. Because he ow knows there will be no shortage of suitors willing to come here at a chance to win even if its not for top dollar.

Do you think the Avs would be offering 6 million this early in the process? The fact that this is being reported this early on in the process might be telling. That's if you believe what he's reporting.

This may sound crazy, but perhaps Sakic is giving him a ridiculous 8 year offer or something to lower the aav and extend the window. He’s old and sucked in the playoffs so I certainly wouldn’t offer it to him but let’s say Sakic offers him an 8 year, 3.85AAV contract with bonuses mostly paid in the first few years, doesn’t Kuemper absolutely take that? Thats 31M guaranteed. That’s more money than a 5 year x 6M contract which some other team might offer.
