This may sound crazy, but perhaps Sakic is giving him a ridiculous 8 year offer or something to lower the aav and extend the window. He’s old and sucked in the playoffs so I certainly wouldn’t offer it to him but let’s say Sakic offers him an 8 year, 3.85AAV contract with bonuses mostly paid in the first few years, doesn’t Kuemper absolutely take that? Thats 31M guaranteed. That’s more money than a 5 year x 6M contract which some other team might offer.
This is indeed crazy if you know how much Sakic hates to give long term contracts.

If trying to re-sign Kuemper, that’s the path I’d take. It would be uncharacteristic of Sakic though who has avoided term like the plague.

Yeah I would agree with this assessment, and the fact that it would be smart for him to try and do that. IF the cap ends up "exploding" like many believe after the players have 'paid off their tab' to the owners, then a 3.85M AAV at the end of that deal looks a bit like backup money (considering our backup makes 2M AAV right now). SHOULD be managable.

Now I'll say this about Joe & Co when it comes to their overall management style...there was once a time where they wouldn't draft Euros, let alone a Euro in the 1st, and Mikko changed that. They have seemingly been fine shifting when the call to do so finally revealed itself to be not only the best course of action, but likely the only one. So I'll be the one to say "never say never..." but obviously I'm not holding out that it happens either.

Regarding Marc-Andre Fleury, he's a divisive player so not much I can say will change anyones minds.

But considering there is at least some smoke that he's Colorado's "Plan B", it's worth pointing out his past season wasn't as bad as the numbers may indicate:

RecordGAASV%SO
October0-5-04.630.8720
November - April28-18-52.760.9124

October was a nightmare for both Fleury and the Seth Jones re-tooled Blackhawks, but MAF bounced back in November. His post-October numbers aren't great, but they're good/respectable given Fleury was playing for a very bad Blackhawks team that went 9-21-7 in the games he didn't play.

For reference, his November+ numbers are similar to goalies like Campbell (28-7-5, 2.69, .913), Demko (30-19-6, 2.75, .913), and Oettinger (30-15-1, 2.53, .914) over the same period.

Just food for thought. Bookmark this post in case there's a meltdown on this board July 13th.

Are there any Avs prospects expected to make the jump next season? Kaut, Olausson, Bowers?

For me, the Avs just have to fill this roster out with hungry players who want to win. They've got the best top in talent in the league at forward/D. I think the Avs have to prio the 2C spot - and Trocheck is who I'd go after. He has Kadri-like upside and will want a Cup.

I agree. I don’t necessarily want Kuemper but if they take him back that’s the route I think they should go. In fact I’d look at doing that for several players like Nuke and Lehkonen too. Give max term, min AAV but don’t give any trade protection. Those contracts actually wouldn’t be so tough to move when they have 1-3 years remaining if they need to.

Tampa’s contract to Paul was genius. Copy it and even go a year longer if it means less AAV.

More than likely going to sign in Montreal, the GM knows him well since he's his former agent.

Habs tried to trade for him at the deadline but couldn't because of cap issues. He's probably going to replace Dvorak there who's on the trade block.

Listening to Friedman, really sounds like Colorado is not a place Giroux would go.
I took that as him referring to the deadline deal where he picked Florida over Colorado, and him justifying why he wouldn't go to Edmonton now. Not that Giroux wouldn't come to Denver now. He's again been linked to The Avs in the last week

EJ was on Spittin' Chiclets recently and talked about a variety of things including why he remained on the ice after the game. I encourage anyone/everyone to look that up and see for yourself if it seems like he's about to retire. From that interview, it doesn't seem like it to me but feel free to judge for yourself.
Yeah he was very candid in that interview including how he was ready to hang em up last summer but the pull of the training camp and being with the boys drew him back in for another year . He spoke about his body being pretty much shot along with the concussion problems , he also spoke about the circumstances around him waiving his M-NTC, NMC for the Seattle expansion draft , you could real get a sense he knows he is at the end but not whether he is ready to walk away , I do believe that if Sakic asked him to take a buyout and move into a player development role with the team he would happily jump at the opportunity . There's some short clips of Bura etc ... available also and the Nate dog interviews are real eye openers .

White wouldn't be a good fit here and Avs should be out on these reclamation sorts. That said, if he can stay healthy (my biggest question about him), he'll contribute to a team.
