Dreger saying that there's a team close to trading UFA rights for a player they know they aren't gonna be able to re-sign...

Sure sounds a lot like Kadri's situation...

Kadri or Gaudreau I'm guessing. Maybe Forsberg.

Ah I mis-read you said Peg 2nd. Either way still not enough to entice Seattle to make that trade. Soucy and Gourde are both really good players. I think Avs would still need to add

Not to mention they are supposed to be big players in FA this year. I don’t see them giving up two of their better players. They want to vastly improve so they can get people in the arena. Some of the highest ticket prices in the NHL and it won’t last without improving that team.

Francis has called out those two players specifically as ones they would like to keep and build on. It would have to be a good Hockey trade to make it happen. Girard might get one of them with picks balancing the deal.

I think Gourde and Soucy are nice players, but Gourde is a ~45 point(ish) #2C, and Soucy is a #5D who's a year away from free agency.

Not that I'd want Colorado to make that deal, but if I were Seattle/Francis I'd have no problem moving those two for 5-years of 24-year-old Sam Girard.

I hope sakic has Bura and his agents phone blocked. Same with DK. Rather go with flower anyway. I would hope like hell that nuke is a major priority.
That's nightmare scenario for me. We keep Kuemper and Bura, lose Nuke and Kadri.

That would be the total opposite I would wish to happen. Kadri and Nuke great playoff performers.. Kuemper and Bura, playoff chokers.

Bura struggled a bit this year but his resume
Is the complete opposite of a playoff choker. He had to play with guys not suited to his style. He has a stupid amount of clutch game 7 goals and game winning goals in general, massive two games for us In the finals before getting hurt. Don’t want him back at his price tag but to call him a playoff choker is ignorant.

Just built this roster on Cap Friendly really quickly.... We would have $1.6M in cap space left over to adjust for guys earning more then I have them making.... But it would fit under the 82.5M cap as constructed.

Not my favorite result since it involves losing Nichushkin, but I think it would be a team ready to win the cup again next year:

- Re-Sign Cogliano(2x950k)
- Re-Sign Lehkonen(4x4.0M)
- Re-Sign J. Johnson (1x800k)
- Sign UFA MAF(1x2.5M)
- Sign UFA Filip Forsberg(7x8.25M)
- Sign UFA Alex Edler(1x1.75M)
- Sign UFA Paul Stastny(1x2.0M)

- Trade Sam Girard + 2023 1st(Lottery Protected) to Seattle for Yanni Gourde + Carson Soucy + 2023 2nd(WPG)
- Trade Nicholas Aube-Kubel to Montreal for 2023 5th round pick

Opening Night Roster:

Landeskog - Mack - Lehkonen
Forsberg - Gourde - Rantanen
Newhook - Stastny - Compher
LOC - Meyers - Cogliano
Sedlak

Toews - Makar
Byram - Soucy
Edler - Johnson
J. Johnson/MacDermid

Fleury
Francouz

I'd hate to lose Nuke but that would be one hell of a Top 6 still, Stastny I think is still a solid player especially from a 3rd line role. Gourde replaces everything we lose in Nuke, only from the Center position now while hopefully Forsberg can replace the lost Kadri offense. Soucy brings lots of size to the Defense again, can play left or right as well.

And we bring in some new veteran guys that are still chasing that first cup and have that drive to win like Helm and Cogliano had for us this year. And still 1.6M in cap space to add at the deadline next year.

In terms of the summer of 2023 then. between EJ(6M), JTC(3.5M), Soucy(2.75M), Fleury(2.5M) Stastny(2M) Edler(1.75M) all expiring... The Avs would have 18.5M that comes off the books for raises to the core guys.

That's a pretty damn good lineup. Although I'd replace Stastny with a younger guy.

If you are Colorado you jump all over that. Soucy easily can replace Manson next to Byram and Gourde maybe ideally a 3C can also play an elite shutdown C with Lehkonen and Nuke.

I just think Girard and a late first isn’t enough to get it done. Maybe if you drop the 2nd from Seattle it’s closer.

He plays too soft game for playoffs. Me no likey.

Not a choker but just not good fit and definitely not for 6-7milllion a season

It’s also kinda screams Nichushkin….
Exactly. He is close to stardom. He could become star for sure.

Still think you let Kadri and Bura walk. Kadri was always going to end up leaving due to cap reasons, With Bura and really Kuemper they have priced themselves out of this team due to the cap as well. Nuke on the other hand you have to find a way to make it work, the guy just fits this team to a tee. You can plug some other guys into spots like a Fleury in net for a year or two. I would move a Newhook plus for Gourde but Seattle isn’t moving that guy if there out paying UFA’s to come play. there not subtracting just adding this off-season. May have to find another winger and run Landy as the second line centre and Mack centre the top line. If he’s being paid 10 plus he’s gonna have to do better in the faceoff dot.

I get it, just seems like GM’s would learn. You get a longer leash with young solid cores than spending crazy money on players that don’t get you over the next hump.
How many organizations actually have a solid plan in place and then are actually disciplined enough to pull it off? Avs obviously and the TBL too. I like what LA has done as a young team. They’re well positioned. But most organizations leave me going ‘meh’. I’m a hard critic though.

They talked about a guy they "developed" and grew into a star. To me that screams Forsberg or more likely Gaudreau.
Dreger didn't indicate who the player was though, so Ray may not necessarily have been talking about a specific player.

Manson is good comparison because Soucy is probably a guy you can get at the deadline next year. Seattle will stink again (barring a shocking turn around) and Soucy's a UFA.

I definitely wouldn't want to pay 5-years of Girard for him. Soucy is a 15-17 minute guy, and the 10 goals he scored last year are probably an aberration.

I don't see any scenario where Burakovsky is re-signed by the Avs.

Thank you for your service, glad you got another cup and you scored some important goals for us but go out there and get paid.

He totally, 100% to me feels like a 6X6 contract with New Jersey, Seattle or Ottawa.

I think its pretty close. COL 2023 1st is worth more then WPG 2023 2nd + Soucy, while Girard is worth more then Gourde. Together I think its pretty balanced as a full deal.

It's lying season so I don't believe what's out there, especially when people are out here talking about $10M/yr for Kadri. Okay, maybe if it's a two-year deal or something but come on, it's not happening. I could see $7.5-8M/yr though and the Avs just can't afford that. Good for Kadri if he can lock in $50M+ and he should absolutely take it.

We always knew Kadri would likely leave so Nichushkin should be the top target. They need to work hard to ensure he doesn't get to speak with other teams. No screwing around and doing the usual low ball stuff to try and get the best deal. Pay him his worth and get it done.
