Totally out of left field but would anyone do the following:

Girard + Newhook (COL)

For

2nd overall in 2022 + roster player (NJ)

Solves your 2C issue assuming wright doesn’t go first overall. Also gives us money to keep nuke and get a goalie.

I would personally and I like Newhook/Girard but that would be a massive chance for the Avs getting someone like Wright on an ELC for 3 years.

No chance NJ does that tho IMO. I don't think Sakic would either honestly.

You take that and run, assuming the roster player is not an awful cap dump.

Totally random and apologies if others have brought it up earlier in the thread, but is there any word on if Erik Johnson -- who has previously had injury issues and has stated publicly he and his wife are waiting until after his career is over to start a family -- might hang up the skates? He's on the top of the mountain and while I would imagine one more year at $6 million is not something you just give toss away, it would surely change the Avs offseason. Anyone else think it's possible?

Low-key concerned Tampa might make a run at Nichuskin with that capspace. The $7.3m they just opened up, plus $4.45m that can be created by moving Killorn would give them enough to re-sign Palat and another big UFA. Russians love Florida, and Nichuskin was having a good time with Kuch and Vasi..

Whaaaat? No way nuke is going to Tampa.

It's nothing but wishful thinking. EJ had a healthy season, lifted the cup and makes a lot of coin next season. He isn't retiring.

Why? If Wright was a projected #1C of super star calibre then maybe yes. He's not. McKenzie has said that most scouts have his upside as a 2nd line center in the NHL. That means that he's probably not reaching that level during his ELC, let alone the first year of it at 19 years old.

Like I said, f*** everything that "helps us" 5 years down the line. You worry about the next season and next season only. It's extremely hard to win a cup in the NHL. Next year is the best chance for another one before MacK extension and Byrams first proper contract kicks in.

I don't think Girard or Newhook are untouchable, quite the contrary. But if you move them you better get back a solid player that helps you in the quest for a repeat.

I had a dream that Avs signed Kadri 7M x 6 yrs. I was happy in that dream fwiw.
We gotta keep the band together as much as possible. Kadri and Nuke had very big impacts on us winning the cup. Teams around the league are going to want those types of players on their team as they seen the impact those guys had. Can you believe these guys coming back for those types of injuries to have the impact in the finals like they did. Teams like the Rangers and Hurricanes are going to throw money at these guys to get them on their team. Give Kadri and Nuke what they want and win the cup again next year and maybe the year after. If we can win 2-3 cups who cares after that . Retool on the fly and hope for the best. Our time is now.

Some nice cap gymnastics from Tampa, per usual. It's gonna be fascinating to see what the first few moves are that Sakic makes. Not often does a team win a Cup then get $26mill to work with.
You think that’s by chance or careful planning? You’re now seeing the culmination of years of effort to carefully manage the player salaries under the cap.

Honestly I think McDonagh is overrated at this point.

He was really good, but I thought this year he looked noticeably worse and especially in the playoffs and the finals against us I thought he was flat out a liability. Careless penalties and skating was a legit issue for him.

Kind of shocked Tampa was able to move that contract so easily... It should be a red flag for Nashville that Tampa so quickly after the playoffs ended were making a point to try and get rid of McDonagh but I guess not. Have a feeling Nashville is going to come to regret this deal.

Maybe right at this moment he’s a bit overrated, but he’s been the second best defenceman on that team since he arrived in Tampa.

Defenceman that provide what he’s provided during Tampa Bay’s run are not easy to find.

Yea WTF is Poile trying to do with his team?

I swear this guy is the worst GM in the league but no one is paying attention.
Agreed. I have repeated many times for anyone that listens that this guy is the most overrated GM in the league for the last 30+ years. Never did anything with WSH either. Why does he have such a long leash?

Tampa gets worse in the short-term but gets relief long-term.

Nashville, who is chasing unicorns, gets better now but who really gives a ****.

St. Louis, who was rumoured to be after McDonagh to improve their overpaid/overrated D, neither gets better now nor worse for the future.

Good for them.

Some of you want to trade established players for draft picks??????
If the avs don’t think they have much future in Colorado it’d be a extremely shrewd mini re-tool. Gives us a bit of cap flexibility on one. Player who we think will be replaced by byram. And newhook who some don’t have much confidence on being a center I’d take Cossack add a third team and see if sm a team like Montreal would want the pick and flip us the piece we need

If it fixes a roster spot immediately then yes. I’m not up to speed on this draft class. Is 2OA a lock for a 2C to join the team?

Agree. Gretzky said during one of the playoff intermissions on TNT that he thought Cernak and McDonagh was the best defense pair in the league. He was wrong, but the fact that this could be said with a straight face tells you what kind of value he has, even at that term and caphit.

We’ve seen how Sakic and MacFarland have operated so far under the salary cap carefully managing and marshaling assets over the years, refusing to acquire big names at the TDL until now. But as the team moves to a different phase of its window of contention, I would expect to see them make occasional, unexpected moves such as this to extend their window by looking for players that are more adaptable and versatile in fitting under JB’s system. Guys like Francouz, Toews, Meyers, Sedlak exemplify this outside the box type of thinking of going elsewhere to get players that might not otherwise be acquired thru the draft but Sakic has to realize our draft board and prospect pool is pretty bare. Whatever he can do to stock up in this regard would be welcome.
