Seattle are rebuilding and a player like Nichuskin can help insulate younger players and/or elevate bad players. He made Jost a passable 3C and Seattle might think he can have a similar impact in their lineup and this worth paying up for.

Lehkonen on basically the Donskoi contract would be good value for what he brings.
Why would Seattle want to pay so much for the privilege of jeopardizing draft position? If Nichushkin, only helps make them mediocre, how does that help Seattle?

I don't necessarily agree with the approach, but LeBrun said Seattle would be big players in UFA. Anyone they sign will jeopardise draft position. I just figured they'd go after Nichuskin for analytics if nothing else. I could be completely off, I'm just speculating.

No doubt Nuke elevates other players. But at peak value (and cost) he's a "win now" asset. SEA going for him would be a terrible way for that franchise to build (not rebuild :D).

I don't think it's a smart play either but look at their entry draft. Do you really think they're that smart? I don't. But I could see them looking at Nuke as someone that potentially hasn't reached their ceiling yet and if you can snag an elite talent like him at $7M then you do it. Avs couldn't afford that price but when the cap goes up then it'll seem like a very shrewd deal.

Kadri can get $8m if he wants it.

Lehk isn't going anywhere for two main reasons. He's an RFA, but more than that he fits like a glove and can help absorb a Nuke loss if it comes to that.

This is only a wierd hunch but one of the reasons I see Nuke leaving is not just the money of course but the lack of Russian comrades on our team. Just doesn't seem he has a good friend to lean on here. Rantanen has become besties with Lehkonen, and its quite evident at the parade. I just don't really know who Nuke hangs out with on our team. It's a stupid thought but maybe it playing a role in his decision.

Sakic is very tough with contract negotiations so all the pending UFAs will have to settle for less if they wanna stay in Denver. They will get offered much more on the open market. Wouldn't surprise me if nearly all of them walk and get paid the big bucks.

I think they were already close friends before the trade.

But yeah I agree with Nuke possibly looking for more Russians...the way he embraced Vasi and Kucherov during the handshake was very telling.

Mikhail Maltsev.

17 G, 31 A, 48 Pts. in 56 games for the Eagles. Did you know he outscored Martin Kaut by a good margin?

I might be in the minority here, but I'd prefer to let Kadri walk.

The Avs are going to have to offer a contract they probably shouldn't in order to keep him. The first couple of years will probably be fine, but then you're paying top dollar for a declining asset. We're talking the EJ contract 2.0 but so much worse. Someone is going to give him a 7 year deal and pay him until he's 39. That's f***ing crazy.

You make those kind of bad decisions on your MacKinnons and Makars. They already made it with Landy (which I'm thrilled about). But you don't make that decision for second line center Naz Kadri.

There's actually a good number of 2Cs on the market this offseason, both UFA and trade. If you can afford 8+/AAV for Kadri I'd rather give that to a younger guy who fits better long term, even if you have to give up assets to trade for him.

Kadri 100% should try for it, however, I think that if anyone actually gives that to him that they are making a big mistake.

Kadri is a good player, but he has hit 60 points 2 times in his career, and hit 80 only once, this past year.

The year before he had 32 points in 56 games and only shot 6.5%.

Did he put it all together this year and is now an elite, not just good, center, or did he show up in a contract year?

I love his grit, I love his tenacity, I think he is a good player and would love to have him stay on the team, but would NOT give him 8 mill, nor a long contract.

For some it's not only about the money, for others nothing else matters. We will see very soon how it is with these Avs UFAs.
Nick is 7 years into his NHL career, and has made like less than 5m bucks. This contract means he will earn at least 21m more, and could still sign another one. You take that deal in an instant. What's more likely for him, that he has now reached a new level with Tampa, or he regresses back to the meh player he was for Ottawa?

What am I missing about Paul?

Doesn't seem to be more than a decent role player, why do folks think that contract is a discount?
Could have had more on the open market, GMs go absolutely crazy with UFAs.

It's a discount at first but 7 years for a bottom sixer is nuts.
