I mean there are plenty of reasons, we've shown we don't need him to win the cup and Byram is clearly ready for 2nd pairing hell he could be 1st pairing on some teams. We're about to lose two of our top 6 forwards, it'd be wise to move him for some help up front.

The Avs were able to survive and win the cup because of the depth on Defense. You trade Girard, you lose that depth.

We're still less than 6 months removed from when Byram wasn't sure if he would ever play an NHL game again.

Unless the trade is a slam dunk deal where we're getting a Matty Barzal 2C sort of player in return, trading Girard would be incredibly dumb. We need to keep as much of our D core together for as long as we can...

Plus beyond that point, we don't really need the cap space this year. It has been done multiple times in this thread now but the Avs do have the cap space to build the 2nd line again for next season. They can afford to keep Nuke, keep Kadri, keep Lehkonen, and they may still have some room left over to bring in a forward for ~2M as well.

They don't have to move Girard for forward help or for cap reasons. Not this summer anyway. '23 is when that decision will need to be made.

Bring back Cogs and Helm. I think both are hard to play against in the bottom six. However you rotate them. Focus on signing Nuke and Lehky. Let Burakovsky walk. Try for Nazem with a frontloaded deal. If he falls through most likely going to have to trade Girard to fill the hole or settle for a lesser player (Copp, Strome, Trocheck) or maybe convince Bergeron to give it one more year ride as Colorado's #2C.

We need to replace Burakovsky. Maybe trade for someone like Fiala or chase someone like Palat. Or for the memes bring in David Perron for a couple years and all of us hate him for half the season before warming up to him scoring goals.

Nuke will want $6.5 million at least. Give it to him!
MAF for $2 million.
Try to retain Bura at his current salary.

And if they don't sign Kadri, sign Trocheck at $6M

Nuke at $5.5M, Trocheck at $6M, Lehky at $3.5M... And they still have ~$5M to spend on a goalie.
I'd love to bring Varlamov back for a couple seasons. Islanders are just sitting him on the bench. He has stretches where he can be brutal but when he's locked in he's a monster. Never seen Kuemper play like locked in Varly.

If you can't find anybody else, may as well try to keep Burakovsky. Not like 60 point LWs grow on trees besides he does fit the team's play style.

Wow, Girard #8 on the trade board. I know we've talked about it if it makes sense for a 2C but I'm a bit surprised to see him that high.
I definitely understand moving him for the right piece if it becomes available, but I’m with you. 8 on the trade board is very high.

If a Byram extension could somehow be worked out this summer, Girard getting moved for a 2C would be logical.

Don't see a Byram extension this summer, though. MacK maybe, Bo no.

Apparently the Avs explored a Varlamov trade before re-signing Francouz. Wonder if they circle back.
A Varlamov-Frankie platoon is a good enough transitional tandem

Not sure if RW is a position of need unless Nichuskin walks, but Connor Brown is a player the Avs scouts probably like a lot as he's a smart two-way forward who's great on the PK and has paced ~50 points the last couple of years on a bad team in Ottawa.

His contract at $3.6m X 1 year would be manageable as well, though I suspect it would entail moving Rantanen to 2C, something like this:

Landeskog - MacKinnon - Nichuskin
Lehkonen - Rantanen - Newhook
Meyers - Compher - Brown

Edit: just saw that he's 11th on that list. Probably in Ottawa's best interest to wait until the deadline and get a haul like Copp and Lehkonen got.

Interesting to see Karlsson so high on that list. Would he be worth considering, or is $5.9m X 5 years a bit too much term?

Assuming Vegas wouldn't trade directly with the Avs but maybe as a sneaky three way trade.

But then we’re right back where we’ve been the last 2 off seasons in net next off season. You have to do something to sort goalie out for at least a few years.
Sure, but the market is looking like Kuemper, Husso and Campbell. Im not exactly thrilled with giving any of those guys term. A Varlamov-MAF stop gap gives time to re-asses.

I mean next year isn’t looking much better. You have Jarry(who probably doesn’t get to FA), Varly, Raanta, Quick, Bernier, Andersen, Broisoitt. Next years even more bleak for FA goalies then this year.
