I am 100% confident in saying if JMFJ and his agent ask for over 900K the Avs walk away.

This is a 6/7 defensemen. There is no Stanley Cup tax for a player like him.
Exactly. In fact the tax is the other way around for depth guys. There are always vets who want to chase a cup who sign for cheap on a contender.

Could Copp be a cheaper 2C option for Newhook & Compher to compete with, who leaves us with enough room for Nuke & Manson?

Lehkonen - MacK - Nichushkin
Landeskog - Copp* - Rantanen
Newhook* - JTC* - Aube Kubel
Cogliano - Meyers - O'Connor
( Sedlak, MacDermid )

Toews* - Makar

Lehkonen $4m x4
Nichuskin $5.5m x7
NAK $1.225m x1
Manson $4m x4
JJ $750k x1
Georgiev $3mx3
Copp $5m x7

That is doable with your 23 man roster even though it leaves hardly any cap space left for cap accrual. If an extra bit of cap is needed you can replace NAK with someone cheaper and bump Meyers up to the 3rd line.

That's pretty much the perfect scenario. Keeping everyone except Kadri and Burakovsky, adding Copp as 2C in UFA, and keeping all our remaining futures for the TDL.

I'm perplexed as to why there isn't more love for Helm. He was a playoff warrior for us. How many 4th liners can skate around and constantly hit McDavid? I was thinking about bumping whatever Helm thread we might have had in the past, but then realized that would be wildly confusing and make it look like we just signed him.

Is the Cogliano contract too rich for him?

Unless his body is now completely broken...

Sounds like Kuemper wants Washington? Glad he's going out East, we all know he would've pitched a shut out against Avs next season.

Ownership should be opening up the pocketbook (all that playoff revenue), and offer big signing bonuses to lower AAV's. Front load contracts with most of the salary in signing bonuses is what I'd offer these guys!!!

There is plenty of love for him. Helm earned the right to do what he wants. If he wanted to come back on a similar deal I'm sure Joe would have signed him already. Seems like Helm is likely to retire or maybe go someplace else for one final year.

Seems to me the problem is those aren't the real prices guys will sign for.

I was being a bit optimistic, I agree.

Regarding Helm, most people have said they'd gladly have him back to reunite the 4th line which was excellent in the playoffs. There haven't been any rumours on him though which is probably why there isn't more discussion on him. I don't think anyone would have an issue if he was brought back.

Any inside info? He'd have to take a big discount for that.

They have $6.7m in capspace with a 19 man roster. Add two $800k players, that leaves $5.1m for a forward to complete the roster.

$5.1m isn't enough for Nichuskin unless he takes a discount, but they could raise an extra $2m by buying out Myers and replacing him with a $1m Dman, thus giving them $7.1m... enough to sign Nuke.

If Cogs got a raise from 1M to 1.25M then JJ isn't signing for 750k. He was a big piece in the regular season and the playoffs.

I say he's closer to 1.5M than 750k.

JJ could get over $1M somewhere else, but he is still making $916K each year for seasons from his Pittsburgh buyout.

What do you expect? He was fine, he had HIS moment in game 6 vs. the Blues and that's about it. I mean be happy that we don't hate on him .... don't forget where you are :)

And Coggs contract is fine. He will continue to "warrior around" until he dies.

The name I keep coming back to is Necas.

Avs love trading for RFA's who have yet to break out, often those coming off down years who present good value via trade.

For example:

Grubauer - lost the starters job in round 1 the year WSH won the cup, so people questioned if he could be a starter. He wanted the opportunity to be a starter.

Burakovsky - lost his top 6 spot to Vrana and people questioned if he was anything more than a 25-30 point forward after 3 straight 12 goal seasons. Coming off a down year but wanted the opportunity to show he was a top 6 forward.

Toews - had a bad playoff with NYI and many Isles fans said he was bad defensively and questioned his upside.

Graves - some promise but overlooked by Vigneault in NYR's system.

Georgiev - has shown starter promise in NY but never really broke out. Coming off a down year. Wants a bigger opportunity.

....

Necas - shown promise as a top 6 and even top line forward, but hasn't really broken out and is coming off a down year. Wants an opportunity for a top 6 role, and specifically as a center. He also happens to be an extremely good skater, having clocked the fastest speed in the league this season.

There are obviously questions about whether or not he can translate as a center, which are legitimate, but the same questions where once asked about MacKinnon. Bednar helped MacKinnon become a force in this league as a center, and perhaps he could do the same with Necas.

This is what's really special about Sakic's career as a GM. Everyone wants to sell high and buy low, but it's absurdly hard to actually do. It's not like everyone universally comments "wow Sakic what a genius" after every trade/signing. It's usually: "He thinks that guy will help? Looks like the Avs are headed in the wrong direction." "He thinks Donskoi Kadri Burakovski can be a second line? But none of those are second line guys!!!"

If they were going to buy out Myers I think they'd have done so immediately.

IMO he is on the team to play.

No inside info, they've got space for Palat and are letting him walk. No tax in Florida, the discount wouldn't have to be that big. Tampa can get to 6-6.5m if needed.

Or they could trade Killorn for say Mike Smith and a pick, put Smith on LTIR, then sign Nuke, and trade for Pat Kane at 50% retained...

What? Nichushkin is 4 years younger than Palat and the better player.
Palat has also played for that organization for a decade. Not all value comes in just numbers and analytics. I'm pretty damn sure that organization and locker room would value Palat more. Just like with PEB, Nuke would have to take a discount. Bellemare took that, he said it pretty clearly that he and his wife preferred Florida, Sakic wanted to bring him back. If Nuke is willing to take much less to go to Tampa then nothing we can do about it. But I doubt this will happen.
